Besides the epic surfing spots, the south coast of Africa is known for some fascinating adventure exploration areas. This is where I have discovered some awesome landscapes and seascapes which I want to share with you today. The dramatic coastal scenes of this region’s wild and rugged shoreline are truly inspiring for any intrepid traveler.
These particular little bays can be found in a region known as the Garden Route, which is perhaps the most attractive tourist region on the entire southern coast of Africa. And this particular bay, called Plettenberg Bay is, for me the topmost gem of all the tourist spots to be found along this stretch of coastline.
Today’s scenes are not your usual seaside photographs. Rather I wanted to reveal the more wild and rugged side of the beautiful bay. Most travelers visit the soft white sandy beaches just a few miles further along the coast but today I was able to access this lesser known part of the bay where hardly anyone ever ventures.
There was not another person in sight all along my hiking trail on the cliff tops as well as along the rocky shoreline. The cloud cover helped to create an epic and dramatic mood, with the feeling of simultaneous fullness and emptiness, calm and action. The scene was pregnant with potential.
With the cloud cover in place today, the sea color remained a steel grey. The muted landscape with its earthy shades and the dark olive green vegetation really conjured up a subtle scene of timeless beauty. This is a great place for anyone who loves hiking or exploring the landscape in general.
Any time of the year is fine, since the climate conditions are generally mild in winter and pleasantly warm in summer. This “goldilocks zone” will appeal to your sense of adventure as well as your love for the wild outdoors with its fresh sea air and vast expanse of empty coastal stretches.
I’ve been visiting this particular bay and hiking along its remote shoreline for some seasons now, and am always happy to return for a new look at the old site. Little changes over the decades, though this year it seems that more people from up north are realizing the benefits of relocating to the south coast.
This hidden shoreline may not remain so hidden for much longer and I would imagine that development will increase in the nearby town as it is continues to receive the influx of migrants looking for healthy and safe regions to relocate in our changing times.
So if you have the opportunity to travel and you enjoy adventure along with outdoor exploration in surrounded by the beauty of nature, then this particular stretch of coastline known as the Garden Route is ideal for you. Today I’m just showing one particular side of the region. Numerous other aspects and angles await your discovery, though this one is my personal preference since it’s so unknown and less traveled.

Awesome @julianhorack and I can never get enough of the “wilder” uninhabited coastal & forest areas between Knysna and Stormsriver & further on both sides. I know it is probably a pipe dream but I hope they don’t get further encroached on.
Thanks for sharing that 🤙
Many thanks Steve, the region is awesome here and actually great throughout SA.
Totally so Julian.
I always like going to the less traveled places and seems like this one is a hidden gem! Shorelines like this has its own beauty and appeal vs the white sandy beaches.
Cool buddy, thanks for your positive feedback.
