Odessa port is one of the largest in the country. Its construction began almost simultaneously with the foundation of Odessa itself. That is, in 1794. Interestingly, the Marine Station did not have a decent station building. It appeared during the Soviet Union. Particularly in 1968. But let's go in order.
The first "sea gates"
In early history, passenger boats could only moor at the Military Pier. There was a small 2-storey station building. It was small and unattractive. In Soviet times, travel along the Crimean-Caucasian line became popular. Thousands of people arrived in Odessa by sea. There was a need to build a new building of the Marine Station.
The first attempts to create a project for the building of the Marine Station
In the 1950s, the first draft of the Sea Terminal building appeared. In the photo we see the project of 1952. It was a grand building. Obo looked more like a palace than a train station. All the elements of palace construction were present in the architecture. That is, a colonnade, turrets with spiers, stucco, sculptures and so on. But the project was not completed. Khrushchev came to power.
Together with this leader of the USSR, the country began to revise the features of architectural compositions. It was decided to get rid of all excesses. The building itself should be roomy and without too much glamor. That is, discreet. In the end, they did just that. the new project turned out to be modest. Surprisingly, it was not implemented either. Pictured is a 1958 project.
In the end, already in the 1960s, a project appeared that suited everyone. The project was presented by Kremlyakov and Golovin. It became like a large passenger liner. One got the impression that this ship was moored right at the first steps of the Potemkin Stairs.
Features of the Marine Station of Odessa
It is important to note that the station was built exclusively from reinforced concrete and glass. There is no foundation from the word “absolutely” The basis of the structure was wooden piles, which were driven directly into the bottom of the Black Sea. For stability, the New Pier was lengthened by 70 meters. Thus, in 1968 Odessa received its first Marine Station.
Reconstructions
The first reconstruction took place in 1993. Not only the appearance was changed, but the general layout. In 2016-18, the facade was updated. It has become so unique that now, when the wind blows, it seems that the building is swaying like a wave. The "kinetic" facade became such thanks to the fact that it was finished with thousands of metal plates. When the wind blows, they move. This creates the "wave effect".
The current terminal of the Sea Port of Odessa is capable of receiving up to 4 million passengers annually. There are a lot of recreational activities here. In addition, there is a yacht club at the Marine Station. Several monuments have been erected here. There is a church of St. Nicholas.
