The original name of the park was Parque del Oeste (West Park) and was renamed in honor of General José de San Martín, who led the Argentine War of Independence.
It is now known as Parque General San Martin.
The main entrance doors were installed in 1909 and are decorated with a condor in the center as well as the coat of arms of the city.
Since it is in town, it is crossed by main arteries in some place but it is also full of beautiful walkways.
Special for a park, but it adds to its charm.
The park is very diverse, from large open spaces to stop for a picnic to very well maintained and beautiful gardens.
El rosedal (rose garden) is a promenade inaugurated in 1919 which offers a nice smell and bench in the shade.
La Fuente de los Continentes (Fountain of the Continents) is a symbolic composition of four continents: America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
It is a nice symbol of the unity and solidarity of all nations and peoples of the world.
The park was built in 1896 and has a combination of 19th century English and French styles in its design.
The park is huge, it is 393 hectares (971 acres) right in the middle of the city of Mendoza and is decorated with 34 sculptures along the paths and roads.
We were amazed to see the number of locals exercising by running, cycling and skating.
Some areas of the park were very busy and others were completely deserted.
The tour of the lake is more for motorized people than walkers, but it did not stop us.
At the end of the lake, we saw the natural history museum which had a beautiful exhibit.
