Introduction: I just want to share a little story about my time at Ajaokuta Steel Company, Kogi State, Nigeria some months ago. Hope you all enjoy it.
Hey people! Let me tell you about a fascinating part of Nigeria you might not know much about.
Kogi State, nicknamed the "Confluence State," is where two major rivers meet and it's home to diverse ethnic groups. Now, within this state, there's this place called Ajaokuta that's kind of a big deal. It's where you'll find the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited, often called Nigeria's "steel dream."
This is a picture I took of a flyover bridge and junction in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State.
This massive steel plant which was to produce steel using the Blast Oxygen Furnace (BOF) process was meant to be the backbone of Nigeria's industrialization, but it's had a pretty rocky history. However having being in the works since the 1970s, it's never really gotten off the ground due to political issues, funding problems, and management hiccups. Still, it remains a symbol of Nigeria's industrial ambitions and potential. Pretty wild how one unfinished steel plant can tell you so much about a country's economic journey, right?
Ajaokuta itself is kind of impressive on its own. It is strategically located in the central part of Kogi State, Nigeria, sitting on the left bank of the Niger River. It's about 164 kilometers south of Abuja, the country's capital. The town's position was chosen for its proximity to iron ore, limestone, and dolomite deposits, as well as its access to water from the Niger River for the steel-making process. Not only that alone but also the town's water supply comes primarily from the River Niger.

These hills are a common sight in Ajaokuta, and Kogi State as a whole.
The famous steel plant is the first of its kind in West Africa. The project was conceived in the late 1960s as part of Nigeria's industrialization efforts.
In 1967, Soviet experts recommended prospecting for iron ore in Nigeria, as the known deposits were of poor quality for steelmaking. The project officially began in 1971 when it was awarded to Soviet technicians.

In 1979, the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited was incorporated under President Shehu Shagari's administration. The Soviet state-owned company Tiajpromoxport (TPE) signed a contract with the Nigerian government in 1975 to construct the steel plant. This was part of Soviet Russia's contribution to the industrialization of Africa under the leadership of the Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev at the time.

In 1983, when President Shagari was removed from office, the project was reportedly 84% complete.
Unfortunately, progress stalled due to various issues, including political instability, funding problems, and allegations of corruption. The project laid dormant for 17 years after being stopped by a new government in 1983.

Over the years, several attempts have been made to revive and manage the Ajaokuta Steel Company, and it has been in Indian, Chinese and now Russian hands since then. All to no avail. However, our national dream of a homegrown steel-making industry is nowhere near dead yet.
Not entirely sure (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think these carry cooling water to the dolomite plant.

As a budding engineer, the sight of these buildings and impressive hardware in such a decrepit condition saddens me greatly. Hopefully the current government would help us bring much-needed foreign investment to turn this grand project from a white elephant to a golden goose. 😁
