[ENG] The Dunajec River Gorge is a picturesque place in the Pieniny Mts on the Polish-Slovakian border. The river cuts deeply (~300m) into the mountains and makes several U-turns over a distance of 18km. I took a raft down the gorge on a perfectly beautiful autumn Sunday in October 2021. It was a fitting end to a fantastic weekend with a perfect weather (do see photos in my earlier posts, albeit the text is in Polish only: Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and earlier on Sunday).
[POL] Przełomu Dunajca nie trzeba przedstawiać. Spływ był dla mnie przyjemnym akcentem na zakończenie "złotopolsko-jesiennego" weekendu w Pieninach. W sobotę weszliśmy na Wysoką i Radziejową, a w niedzielę przeszliśmy pieniński klasyk, czyli Szczawnica - Sokolica - Trzy Korony - Sromowce Niżne. Do Szczawnicy wróciliśmy rzeką.
Rafting
[ENG] There are two rafting possibilities. Traditional - in narrow wooden flat-bottom boats bound together in sets of 5. Contemporary - rubber rafts. The former allows to take in the beauty of nature as the river takes the rafts with its flow. There are two boatmen with long wooden sticks to steer clear of rapids and rocks. The modern rafting is more for the adventurous, as the passengers are supposed to paddle themselves. After a day of hiking, we opted for the leisurely traditional raft.

[POL] Dunajcem można spłynąć na dwa sposoby. Tradycyjny to wąskie dłubanki połączone w zestawy po pięć. My siedzimy i podziwiamy widoki, a dwóch flisaków dba by tratwa omijała bystrzyny i skały. Druga, współczesna opcja, to gumowy ponton i samodzielne wiosłowanie. Pierwszą część dnia spędziliśmy aktywnie, więc na spływ wybraliśmy opcję tradycyjną.
[ENG] The boatman in the front is the one more experienced (=older). His jobs seems to be mostly telling stories. The boatman in the back is a young man who works hard to keep the raft on the proper course.
[POL] Flisak z przodu jest bardziej doświadczony (czyli starszy). Wygląda jakby jego głównym zajęciem było zabawianie pasażerów historyjkami. Z tyłu jest młody flisak, który ciężko pracuje by utrzymać tratwę na właściwym kursie.
The Dunajec River Gorge
[ENG] The Dunajec River Gorge begins at the foothill of Mt Trzy Korony (= Three Crowns). The mountain is less than 1000m in altitude, but it dominates the landscape. The name comes from several rugged peaks. There are actually five of them, but the name Three Crowns stuck, as the three middle peaks are significantly higher and more prominent than the other two.
[POL] Spływ zaczyna się w Sromowcach Niżnych (przy okazji wiecie skąd nazwa? Wg pana flisaka kiedyś jeden juhas pomyślał "srom owce, flis lepszy" :-) ) u podnóża Trzech Koron. Koron tak naprawdę jest 5, ale środkowe szczyty są wyższe i bardziej wybitne niż dwa pozostałe i utarła się nazwa Trzy Korony. Co ciekawe, jest to nazwa stosunkowo młoda (połowa XIXw). Wcześniej ta góra nazywała się po prostu Pieniny.
[ENG] As the river cuts its way thru the mountains, it makes several loops. The front boatman would tease us - "on which side are we going to pass that rock?" Almost every time we got it wrong!
[POL] Dunajec jest bardzo zakręcony. Niektóre zakręty to prawie 180 stopni. Starszy flisak raz po raz pyta - "z której strony będzie tamta skała?". Prawie za każdym razem udzielamy złej odpowiedzi.
[ENG] The Pieniny mountains are mostly limestone. As the rock is rather soft, it allows the river to sculpt its way thru and hence the gorge. The highest peak of Pieniny, Wysoka, is at 1050m a.s.l. Doesn't seem too high, does it? Don't be misled. The mountains are full of deep canyons and steep slopes. They are mostly covered with trees, but in many place one can see sheer rocks.
[POL] Najwyższy szczyt Pienin, Wysoka, ma 1050m n.p.m. Mało? W tych górach nie liczy się wysokość, a ukształtowanie terenu. A te jest bardzo urozmaicone. Mamy głębokie wąwozy i ostre zbocza. W większości góry są pokryte lasem, ale nie brakuje miejsc, gdzie wystają gołe skały.
Szczawnica
[ENG] We end our rafting down the Dunajec River Gorge in Szczawnica, a small mountain resort town. It is possible to continue down the river to Krościenko, where the rafts are picked from water and transported overland back to starting point.
[POL] Kończymy spływ w Szczawnicy. Można płynąć dalej do Krościenka, ale to co najlepsze jest już za nami. Czeka na nas moje auto i trzeba wracać do domu. Kończymy fantastyczny weekend "Złota Polska Jesień w Pieninach". Zachęcam do lektury i obejrzenia zdjęć z całego weekendu. Pogoda była po prostu przecudowna.
Sobota rano: Jaworki -> Wysoka
Sobota po południu: Radziejowa -> Jaworki
Niedziela rano: Szczawnica -> Sokolica i Trzy Korony -> Sromowce Niżne

Such a beautiful country! Those limestone mountains remind me of Virginia here in the US. They seem to make for some of the best river gorges, as your photos capture so well.
I'd like to visit Poland in the next year, or two. From what I've seen on Hive, it is a beautiful country, and underrated as a travel location.
