St. Albans Bay Vermont. Lake Champlain. In winter. Not as exciting for some folks as summer. I was feeling a little cabin fever today, and since the weather warmed to a nice 32 degrees F (0 C), I decided to take the Drone out for a flight.
There is a small marina here in this bay, but as you can see, all the boats pulled out for winter. As deep and as hard as the freezes are here, nearly any boat left in the water would be crushed.
This is the Pier, I'm flying from inside my truck, just another 20 feet up the pier.
The winter weather doesn't deter everyone from the lake. There have been a lot of people out there ice fishing. They will go out onto the ice, put up a little tent, or just sit in the open, drill a hole through the ice and fish.
Here you can see some of the folks on the ice. The ice is so thick that you can look out and see numerous cars and trucks driving on it, then parking and fishing. Not me, I'm sure that some get an unexpected car wash now and again, and trying to swim out of a sinking car in that ice cold water? Nope.
Playing with the drone and the zoom levels again (not full zoom here). Here we are with the drone in the same place, about a mile out from the pier and marina where I am sitting in my warm truck just zoomed in a bit. Hello fisher people. Looks like one of those is a UTV.
The next three are my favorite comparisons of the set. I'm flying from the drivers seat in my truck just behind the pier. The drone is about 300 ft up and over a mile out. First the standard shot at 1x with the Hasselblad camera, no zoom.
Below we are zoomed in part way. A nice little shot of the marina and City Hall at about 7-10x (1.37x digital zoom on the DJI camera).
Then with the drone in the same place, now zoomed in at the full 28x (actually 2x digital zoom on the 7x camera). Look at how close that building looks now! I can't wait to get out and play more!
This is just a farmhouse on the other side of the bay. Just because I liked it. All that open white ice in the back will be water in another month. Excited to come back in the spring and see the difference, and in the fall with all the colored leaves.
Hi KS love the drone photos I’ve just got a DJI mini 2 because its below 250 gram there are a lot less restrictions on flying here in the UK. It really is great fun and the 4K camera give great results
Nice shot! My son-in-law has a mini 2 and it is sweet! I love how nimble it is and how small for travel! Looking forward to more of your shots.
