This will be our last stop of our trip to Germany. On our drive back home to France we hit up the city of Baden Baden and spent a few hours there eating breakfast and walking around the city.
It wasn't quite a half way point from Nuremberg to our home, but it did help break up the drive, at least a little.
Baden Baden is a resort town and spa city, that is located in the Black Forest region of the country. It's about a 20 minute drive from the border of France and about 3 hours from Nuremberg, where we were coming from.
Among the town's notable attractions are its casino and even more so, its Roman baths. Some of baths date as far back as year 211. Source. in the city you will notice a lot of fountains and water features scattered all around town. Its as if they've done that intentionally to give you a hint of what the town is all about.
The cities water springs and baths also contributed to the town's name. Baden means to bathe and bad means bath.
The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of 11 Spa Towns found throughout seven countries in Europe.
These are are towns with natural mineral water springs where large bath houses have been built around them and essentially turned into tourist attractions. Source.
There are multiple baths located in the city so if that's your thing you could do a "bath crawl" during your visit.
One famous bath house is the Friedrichsbad Spa. Its located in a historic building that dates back to 1877. It has 17 different stations inside set up like a circuit. It may not be for those that are conservative or of a shy disposition though, since its a "textile free" facility, which means no clothes or swim suits are allowed. Source.
Would you do a naked soak or swim indoors among strangers?
For the Foodies out there, Baden Baden definitely has you covered as well. The town boast 17 Michelin star restaurants, which is really impressive given its small population size of only around 55 thousand people.
We saw at least two Michelin restaurants during our walk but we didn't go inside.
We mainly just wandered the parks and green spaces and streets, to stretch our legs before the five hour drive ahead of us.
Baden Baden actually feels like a resort town as you tour through it.
It's Full of flowers, it's clean and fancy and just feels like there is a lot of money flowing through it - often the case with town's that host a casino.
The atmosphere is relaxed as well and almost tranquil.
Donating all of your money to the casino may be stressful but you can always relieve your tension and worries by getting a massage and then soaking in a warm bath. It's all about balance, isn't it?
We had great weather that day. It was nice and sunny and warm. Perfect for laying around.
Many of the buildings in town were built in a sort of Neo-Renaissance architecture style.
They housed a variety of artisinal shops and cafes and restaurants, so there was plenty to view and explore.
I really liked this tree lined street that we stumbled upon. If I'm recalling correctly, it had some nice high end stores that were fun to window shop at. To be honest though, I mostly just liked the small park running down its center.
One of my favorite things that we did was tour the Trinkhalle (Pump House).
It a 19th century building that was one of the first things that we saw when entering the city. It really stood out. It looked as though it was built to reminisce about Badens old Roman heritage.
The structure had a 90 meter long arcade lined with Roman style pillars.
Within the walkway were 14 elaborate murals that depicted water features and attractions found in the surrounding Black Forest region of Germany.
Be sure to stop for a moment and admire the artwork. That's what we did.
The pumphouse was built around a natural hot water spring that was once believed to hold many healing properties. Today it is just a symbolic feature and it is suggested that visitors do not actually drink the water there. By today's standards it isn't considered suitable for human consumption Source.
Well would you look at that, I think it's time to wrap things up. What else can I say about Baden Baden other than its a really nice location in the Black Forest region of Germany, a great place for treating yourself to a spa day, gambling, fine dining, or just reminiscing on its Roman past.
Full disclosure, we did textile-free places throughout my childhood until teenage years (I had really "French" parents), mainly beaches. So I think I could do baths and all, but you have to bear in mind that it ain't the 80s no more, and there will probably be some weirdos touching themselves in a corner of your baths. Or at least that's what I believe hahaha. Probably fine...
I really enjoyed your Germany trip!
Haha yeah that's pretty much what I'm thinking as well, though Europe seems to be more liberal and open to nudity so maybe there aren't as many perverts around lol. I don't have the confidence for it. I would feel way too awkward 😆
I can so much feel the vibe of this place! 😍 Baden Baden is a place mentioned so many times at our home (my parent's home) as one of the aunties lived somewhere there and my grandma when visited the aunt also went to Baden Baden. I am sure we had some souvenirs too, but I don't have them here with me.
Excellent post as always @leaky20, I should find time to enjoy your posts more often. Have a great upcoming week 😎
Yeah its a very nice town. So have you visited the location yourself or just other family members?
Just they went. Children stayed at home 🤣
But a few years ago we (with my husband and son) we drove by there (but didn't enter the city of Baden Baden). We stayed at Mulhouse (France) for one day, then passed the river and it was already Germany, drove up to Karlsruhe and then toward Stuttgart. The final destination was Munich where we stayed a few days with a friend. We loved Munich!!
I see. Well that sounds like a great trip. Yeah Munich is a very nice city as well.
You really are unsociable!! lol
Baden Baden looks really good, worth a visit indeed.
I grew up in North America. We are all insecure and self centered 🤣😂😅
ahhhhhhh!
The Black Forest and Baden Baden are interesting names.
... So, did you two "regain balance" from the Friedrichsbad Spa in a textile-free fashion?
It's a really pretty town indeed!
No we didn't go in haha. We didn't have time but not sure if we would have anyway lol
🤣😂🙃
You have visited all cities that we have either on the way to Czech Republic or The Netherlands 😁 It's funny that I recognize them all from the road signs. I have thought that Baden Baden was an industrial city, so this is a lovely surprise to see that it's actually a spa city. We have Baden in Switzerland, so I was confused when I saw the sign of Baden Baden for the first time. I still don't understand why it's Baden twice 😂
Lovely pictures! Thank you for sharing! It was a pleasure to go with you on your trips in Germany 🙂
It sounds like it's in a good location for you to visit at some point. That's great.
Yeah I'm not sure of of the double name - maybe... two times the fun! 😂
Your story of Baden-Baden is really informative. Thank you @leaky20 for being so clear about all the diversity. The bathhouse, which is located in an old, historical building, is very tempting, but I certainly wouldn't dare to go naked, by the way, don't you know why there's such rule?
I'm glad that you found it informative.
I wouldn't go naked in the bath house either. I'm not sure why the rule is in place - do you know what the reason is?
I don't know, unfortunately:(
But you wrote this information in your article, so I wanted to ask:)
I see.
If only I knew lol
A mind-blowing city. Very beautiful. And you have taken pictures that are pleasing to the eyes of others. eye catching pictures🤩☘
I'm glad you liked them
I have been to Germany but I never had time to organize myself to visit any of the sights, I had in mind Berlin with all the sights that can be found there, if I ever go to Germany again I will definitely put the name of this city on the list.
It's a city worthy of anyone list 😄👍
Awesome photos and post production. They really pop! Very eye catching 👏
TWO Michelins?! Wow! What type of cuisine if you don't mind my asking?
We didn't eat at the Michelin restaurants just saw them walking by. There are 17 in the city. One that we saw was a cafe and the other a restaurant. We didn't look closely at the menu's so I don't recall the type of food. At the Cafe I saw that they served cake though. We had just finished breakfast so we weren't hungry but we originally planned on going back there after our walk to have a slice just for the hell of it, but then we just never went back. We were basically like "screw it" we better get on the road and head home, we can't spend 45 mins to an hour eating cake when we have a 5 hour drive ahead of us lol.
17??
Good lord!
High standards then. I wonder what it is? Healthy competition, perhaps!
I hear you... but...
always eat the cake! :D
Yeah there us a high concentration there. Probably because it's a resort town with a casino.
Yeah true, we should have went for the cake
I love Germany! I was in Dresden couple months ago! Your pictures are amazing!
We went to Dresden in 2015 I loved both the old and new parts of the city.
I haven't been to Dresden but I hear that it's nice.
Yeah Germany is a great country to visit. We liked it a lot.
What a beautiful place!! It’s so green, so perfect, well… so Germany… I love how them tend to design and build everything in a perfect harmony!!
Yeah it's a really pretty town. Definitely harmonious
This doesn't look like Germany! Interesting...
No? Where does it remind you of?
more like a south European country
Yeah I can see that. It's the architecture that makes it look that way, I think.
I never been to Germany but this city does have a places I would love to be like sitting on a bench below the line of threes, looks very calm place and next to water fall on the third picture, you can probably just sit there and fall sleep under the shadow, looks like a blast ✌️
Yeah the benches in the tree lined park would be a nice spot to sit and relax.
Hehehehe to think that we have a restaurant named Baden Baden here.
I didn’t know that there was a back story behind the name.
Thanks for enlightening us @leaky20😃
That's interesting. I wonder if it's related to the city 🤔
What a lovely place! So relaxing to be in this place. Great pictures as well. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it 😁
What a beautiful city, great pictures. It reminds me of Wiesbaden another historic spa town in western Germany.
Interesting. I haven't been to Wiesbaden, but I'm intrigued.
Hermosas fotos, gracias un lugar encantador, me gustaría para mis vacaciones, muchas gracias por esas fotos tan hermosas.
I'm glad that you liked them 😁
