Much Larger Than I Expected!
Drone view of the whole of Gasparee Island with Trinidad (right) and Monos Islands (left) in the background!
Gasparee Island is one of the small islands within a gap between Venezuela and Trinidad called the "Bocas del Dragón". It is just a 15 minute boat ride away from the North western tip of Trinidad from a town called Chaguaramas. The Trinidadian Island is used mostly for vacationing by the locals and there are a few natural attractions there such as the Gasparee Caves. The island was named after its first owner Gaspar De Percin when it was given to him by the Governor, José Maria Chacón, of Trinidad at the time when it was colonised by Spain (before Britain). I had to visit the island to do some filming for a resort there and getting to explore the south eastern part of the island was fun!
We took a pirogue from Chaguaramas in Trinidad and I sent up the drone while on the boat to film how visitors to the resort would be getting there. It felt very leisurely and the waters were so calm that the voyage was smooth enjoyable even though the boat was small. It was also a great way to see and experience the Bocas Del Dragón with the other small islands just around Chaguaramas.
As we approached the dock at Bombshell Bay on the island, we could see lots of buildings covering the island from the shore all the up the hills. I was quite expecting the island to be somewhat primitive but there seemed to be a lot of infrastructure present for all the creature comforts. As the boat came in to dock, I gained some altitude to get a great vantage point that showed off the pristine beautiful colored waters and more of the buildings that were all rentable beach houses and resorts.
Bombshell port as the docking area was called was so unique with its buildings that were not only just on the water's edge but extending over it! The above shot is the main Building of Gasparee Island Vacation Resort, the location I was brought over to gather some content for. They seemed to have everything there on the island, conference rooms, halls, restaurants and much more!
There was a private beach and pool that looked so cosy and clean. The sands were beautiful and the pristine crystal clear waters, so much so! I guess you get the best of both worlds with this one. There were lots of trees and the scenes were so unique.
The pool seemed to have a slide, lots of benches and a gazebo with lots of natural shade. It definitely looked inviting especially on a scorching hot day like this. There were a few people there already taking in the poolside vibes and enjoying the facilities. The pool itself was basically on a hillside and was towered over by a ton of beach houses and villas that gave it an even more cosy feel.
In my opinion the private beach was the most beautiful even more than the poolside. Just look at that water! It was so clear you could see to the bottom and the almond tree provided some natural shade under which there were benches and tables which looked amazing for having a seaside picnic! Fishing here would be so much fun which people do do here quite often when they visit.
The Resort needed me to shots of their rooms as well and so I got a glimpse of what the views from one of their villas would look like! There were narrow well paved roadways that we along to one of the beach houses. The atmosphere and crisp air here away from all the hustle and bustle of the more urban Trinidad or Tobago was immediately apparent with a hint of tranquility.
The rooms were well furnished and did not at all lack amazing views. The decor was just as colorful as the island itself and very spacious. There was definitely a relaxing vibe immediately upon entry. I could see the ocean view peeking through the curtains that lead to a veranda.
There were seats and tables on the veranda itself that would be amazing to just sit on mornings and enjoy your coffee or take in the sunset vibes! Just look at that view with the brilliant color of the water, the lish greenery and the sights of the ocean beyond, just immaculate! There was also a great view of the dock where we had just landed that you could basically watch the vessels coming in and out as the day progessed.
The rooms were not at all lacking in the views department either with a magnificent walk out balcony that had similar views, if not better at a higher height. You just know that the mornings here would be amazing to wake up to!
Next up on the content tour was Bombshell Bay restaurant that you can see in the shot above painted orange. This was one of the buildings that seemed to protrude out into the ocean from the mainland especially from the top deck.
There were panoramic views of the ocean and the island itself as well as the other islands nearby including Trinidad where they had outside seating. These seaside views would be amazing to have dinner with especially at sunset. I just loved how the vegetation looked on the hillsides looked all around with the blue hue of the waters. There was also a close up view of the docking area as well s the private beach as well!
The interior seating of the restaurant was just cosy and ambient maintaining that seaside dining experience feel that was kept by the huge windows that provided almost the same views as before just a great deal less panoramic. There was a quaint sailor/ old timey colonial feel that was very apt for the history of the island as well.
Flying the drone around the island was extremely fun with its very undulating nature. You can see that the south eastern part of the island was almost ubiquitously developed while the rest was abruptly untouched raw nature with a few isolated buildings here and there. I was very unaware that Gasparee island had so much infrastructure present, I always had the notion that it was somewhat underdeveloped!
What was really beautiful was the color and clarity of the waters, a hue that I have not seen in Trinidad or Tobago and it was quite unique! It was quite striking with the color of the vegetation as well that covered the the whole island. There was that distinct green/ brown hue, almost like a rustic autumnal color due to it being dry season here in Trinidad and there being a substantial lack of rain.
All in all, Gasparee island was one of those locations in Trinidad that surprised me so much with its unparalleled views, amazing beach, poolside vibes and beach houses. It was very unique and I definitely will be returning to the island to explore the caves that are quite popular! I did not know it was such an easy and quick boat ride from Trinidad to the small island and so many more trip will be taken to the Bocas Del Dragon! Thanks a lot for coming along, Cheers!
