Greetings, travelers!
How are you today? I really hope I find you in good spirits and state of mind! If not, you could follow through and dive with me into this colorful travel story about a small city, called Ahtopol, located at the Southern Shores of Black Sea in Bulgaria.
Earlier today, I caught myself thinking about it (again) and returning there in my memories and wonderful recollections. Yup, I traveled there quite a few times and spend some really quality time with different friends, so I asked myself, why is that? What are the reasons for me to want to go there, again, and spend even more time?
Here is my short list of reasons :)
- Photography
Well, in my humble photographer's opinion, Ahtopol is one of the ultimate photography destinations on Black Sea in Bulgaria. The old lighthouse there, built on top of the rocks in the sea, is a magnetic subject for many photographers. Sunrises there are stunning. Also, during sea storms, the waves crash in an impressive way into it. So, it is perfectly good to visit the place in good and bad weather.
You'll probably notice that here, while the Sun was moving up above the horizon, I was changing my position and perspective, to "put it" behind the lighthouse, to achieve this effect. Nice, don't you think? :)
There are several points to shoot the lighthouse from, all giving unique perspectives. All beautiful:
Well, I suppose, that is one of my favorite subjects there! I give to it a lot of time, every time I go :)
- Fishing
I used to go fishing a lot. Lately though, I would rather visit fishermen villages, or just the fishing ports, where fishermen moor and dock their boats. I love how every boat is made unique in its own way, driven by the creativity of its owner ;) Also, there is some magic about those places; at first, they look chaotic but later I see the order and logic of all the equipment stored there :)
Here is the silhouette of a lonely fisherman before the sunrise:
Imagine what it is like, to meet the new day with a fishing rod in your hands, and the golden waters surrounding you!
- Architecture
For those into architecture, there is plenty to see, apart from the lighthouse.
There is a big beautiful church, many of those typical Bulgarian houses by the sea where the second story is bigger than the first and part of the rooms go above the city streets.
Few ancient remains could be found too. Also, a lot of observation points when you take the time to walk by the sea.
- Nature
The beauty of Mother Nature there is astonishing. Frankly, I could spend hours there, walking slowly or just sitting and enjoying the sea and the views around. At any part of the day. And it was absolutely obvious, it wasn't me only :)
The scenery golden hour of the day:
Or watching the free souls of the birds:
Or simply some natural scenes and landscapes that fill my eyes and soul with awe:
Marvels could always be discovered on the beaches, right? :)
I even found beautiful fossils without looking for them :)
- Culture, history, other arts
Did you know Bulgaria had given the Cyrillic Alphabet to the world? Well, now you know! :)
Ivan, one of the most popular male names, who decided to write his name in the drying concrete.
That "Glarus" below is the name of one fishing boat. The word has two meanings:
- seagull, that skillful bird that feeds mainly by catching small fish.
- man, who seduces women during the holiday season for a quick summer fling :)))
I wondered which meaning was used by the owner of this particular boat, hehehe.
Plenty of graffiti could be located inside and around the sea city. Mainly of famous Bulgarian figures:
Sometimes there are pieces of art that bring creeps and could be found at some unusual places out in the wilderness:
In terms of Art, one very special place is the "Cultural Center", or the former Greek School, build close by the sea. It has been turned into a permanent outdoors expositions and some very interesting pieces could be seen there:
- Leisure activities
What else could be done here? That destination is mostly known as a summer sea vacations place, of course. However, I almost never go there in the summer, as it feels a bit overcrowded to me and it's not the best time to take photos too.
Let me mention here that I've done paragliding twice here, it is really awesome to see everything from birds' eyes.
Imagine the view when flying over the lighthouse ;)
Free range camping has been forbidden recently in Bulgaria but some folks still do it:
Also, the outskirts of Stranga mountain start near the city so the mountain adds to the experience:
Let me mention here the Museum of the Anchor. Practically, this is a hotel with restaurant and great private museum, an interesting place I recommend not only because of the hospitality of its owners but also due to the great food I've tried there. Everything was just delicious and awesome :)
Of course, boats could be rented there:
But hey, what could be better than just walking around (yourself or your dog), enjoying the views and stretching your body a bit? :)
