Greetings, Pinmapple friends. A few days ago, after a work visit to a facility near the historic district, I was on my way home and decided to wander through the narrow, crowded streets of Old Havana. Actually, my goal was to enter the art gallery located in the San Geronimo Building, the site of Cuba's first university. However, it was Monday, unfortunately, the building was closed, since visiting days are from Tuesday to Sunday. In spite of this, the building is so magnificent and has so much history that I did not think I had wasted my time. I want to share with you this building that always attracts my attention because of its fascinating mixture of modernism and antiquity.

Hace unos días, después de una visita de trabajo a una instalación cerca del casco histórico, me dirigía a casa y decidí adentrarme por las estrechas y pobladas calles de la Habana Vieja. En realidad, mi objetivo era entrar a la galería de arte que se encuentra en el Edificio de San Gerónimo, el lugar donde está ubicada la primera Universidad de Cuba. Sin embargo, era lunes , lamentablemente, el edificio se encontraba cerrado, ya que los días de visita son de martes a domingos. A pesar de ello, el edificio es tan magnífico y posee tanta historia que no consideré haber perdido mi tiempo. Quiero compartir con ustedes este edificio que siempre atrae poderosamente mi atención debido a su fascinante mezcla de modernismo y antigüedad.
The building I show you is the result of an important rescue carried out by the Office of the Historian of Havana. It is the former Convent of Santo Domingo, where in 1728 the first College of University Studies in Cuba was founded by the Dominican Fathers. The building occupies an entire block, between Obispo, Mercaderes, San Ignacio and O'Relly streets, and holds a lot of history and wisdom.
El edificio que les muestro es el resultado de un importante rescate llevado a cabo por la Oficina del Historiador de La Habana. Se trata del antiguo Convento de Santo Domingo, donde en 1728 fue fundado el primer Colegio de estudios Universitarios de Cuba por los padres Dominicos. El edificio ocupa toda una manzana, entre las calles Obispo, Mercaderes, San Ignacio y O'Relly, y encierra mucha historia y sabiduría.
If we go back in time, we can go back to 1515, when the Dominican religious arrived in Cuba and built their church in this place. Over the years, that church underwent several transformations and expansions, until it became the convent of San Juan de Letran. Later, the friars turned it into the first university center of the island, called the Royal and Pontifical University of San Geronimo de la Habana, where outstanding figures such as Tomas Romay, Felix Valera, Cirilo Villaverde, among others, were formed.
Unfortunately, after the government took control of the student center, it lost its original purpose and the building fell into disrepair and changed owners, until in 1957 it was completely demolished by the company Terminal de Helicópteros S.A., with the intention of constructing a modern building with a helicopter terminal on the roof, without considering the historical value they were destroying.
Si retrocedemos en el tiempo, podemos remontarnos a 1515, cuando los religiosos dominicos llegaron a Cuba y construyeron su iglesia en este lugar. A lo largo de los años, esa iglesia experimentó diversas transformaciones y ampliaciones, hasta convertirse en el convento de San Juan de Letrán. Posteriormente, los frailes lo convirtieron en el primer centro universitario de la isla, denominada la Real y Pontifica Universidad de San Gerónimo de la Habana, donde se formaron destacadas figuras como Tomás Romay, Félix Valera, Cirilo Villaverde entre otros.
Lamentablemente, después de que el gobierno tomó el control del centro estudiantil, perdió su propósito original y el edificio cayó en deterioro y cambió de propietarios, hasta que en 1957 fue completamente demolido por la compañía Terminal de Helicópteros S.A., con la intención de construir un moderno edificio con una terminal de helicópteros en la azotea, sin considerar el valor histórico que estaban destruyendo.
After many years of abandonment, it was not until 2000 that the Office of the Historian created a project for its restoration. Preserving a contemporary architectural design, some spaces existing in the past were rescued. Now it is impossible to walk through these streets without this gleaming building attracting attention. The university classrooms where the "Genesis of Conservation and Heritage Management" degree program is taught were restored.
Tras muchos años de abandono, no fue hasta 2000 cuando la Oficina del Historiador creó un proyecto para su restauración. Conservando un diseño arquitectónico contemporáneo, se rescataron algunos espacios existentes en el pasado. Ahora es imposible pasear por estas calles sin que este reluciente edificio llame la atención. Se restauraron las aulas universitarias donde se imparte la carrera de "Génesis de la Conservación y Gestión del Patrimonio".
The tower of the old convent, once the tallest in the area, was rebuilt, paying homage to the creators of the first University of Cuba.
Se reconstruyó la torre del antiguo convento, que en su momento fue la más alta de la zona, rindiendo homenaje a los creadores de la primera Universidad de Cuba.
In the midst of all the modernism, the baroque entrance on Mercaderes Street stands out, built in quarry stone, with its two columns and the images of Saints Tomás de Aquino, Pedro Mártir and Domingo de Guzmán, together with the coat of arms of the Dominican order.
En medio de todo el modernismo, destaca la entrada barroca por la calle Mercaderes, construida en piedra de cantera, con sus dos columnas y las imágenes de los santos Tomás de Aquino, Pedro Mártir y Domingo de Guzmán, junto con el escudo de la orden dominica.
In front of this entrance on Mercaderes Street, there is a beautiful small square called Plazuela de Santo Domingo, with a round fountain that is always supplying water thanks to a small hydraulic system that feeds it. The contrast between the entrance and the fountain creates a charming image. There are several stone benches and some vegetation that give life to the place.
There are also a series of four statues representing famous literary personalities with a literary historical connection. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of the famous work "Don Quixote de la Mancha"; Dante Alighieri, Italian writer famous for his masterpiece, "The Divine Comedy"; Luis Vaz de Camões, Portuguese poet known for his epic work "The Lusiads"; and William Shakespeare, English playwright, poet and actor known for his literary works, all have in common, having influenced generations of writers and artists around the world.
These sculptures are placed on pedestals of approximately 1 meter high, veneered in stone, which creates a harmonious aspect with the baroque entrance.
Frente a esta entrada de la calle Mercaderes, se encuentra una hermosa plazuela llamada Plazuela de Santo Domingo, con una fuente redonda que siempre está surtiendo agua gracias a un pequeño sistema hidráulico que la alimenta. El contraste entre la entrada y la fuente crea una imagen encantadora. Hay varios bancos de piedra y un poco de vegetación que le dan vida al lugar.
También existen una serie de cuatro estatuas que representan a célebres personalidades literarias con una conexión histórica literaria. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, autor de la célebre obra "Don Quijote de la Mancha"; Dante Alighieri, escritor italiano famoso por su obra maestra, "La Divina Comedia"; Luis Vaz de Camões, poeta portugués conocido por su obra épica "Los Lusiadas"; y William Shakespeare, dramaturgo, poeta y actor inglés reconocido por sus obras literarias. Todos tienen en común, haber influido en generaciones de escritores y artistas de todo el mundo.
Estas esculturas se ubican sobre pedestales de aproximadamente 1 metro de alto, enchapados en piedra, lo que crea un aspecto armónico con la entrada barroca.
At each corner of the building, there are acrylics that identify the locations in each wing of the building and the name of the streets. Although I could not enter any of them, since it was Monday and all areas were closed, from the sidewalk I could observe its long corridors.
En cada esquina del edificio, hay acrílicos que identifican las locaciones en cada ala de la edificación y el nombre de las calles. Aunque no pude entrar a ninguna de ellas, ya que era lunes y todas las áreas estaban cerradas, desde la acera pude observar sus largos corredores.
The main entrance to the building, on San Ignacio Street, is completely modern, with glass and stairs with aluminum railings. At the entrance, there is a sign that gives the building its name: "Edificio Santo Domingo", where the Cinema and the Gallery are advertised. In front of the building, there are circular benches with earthen flowerbeds and trees in the center, which provide shade for those who sit and rest. It is a very nice detail that tries to add a green touch to this part of the city that lacks vegetation.
La entrada principal del edificio, por la calle San Ignacio, es completamente moderna, con cristales y escaleras con barandas de aluminio. En la entrada, hay un cartel que da nombre al edificio: "Edificio Santo Domingo", donde se anuncia el Cine y la Galería. Frente al edificio, hay unos bancos circulares con canteros de tierra y árboles en el centro, que brindan sombra a quienes se sientan a descansar. Es un detalle muy bonito que trata de añadir un toque verde a esta parte de la ciudad que carece de vegetación.
This building is of great importance because of its historical role and its transcendence for education in Cuba. This restoration has allowed to revive its importance and the legacy of the first Cuban university, turning it into an emblematic landmark that combines modern style and ancient architectural aspects. El edificio es una belleza , pero además tiene varios espacios interiores que no pude visitar galerías y diferentes salas, además la zona en que se encuentra es muy bonita
