During my recent visit to Old Havana I got lost in that cobblestone labyrinth full of colors and sounds that makes me feel like I was in an old novel. It was walking through those streets that I found myself in front of one of the most impressive architectural jewels of the island, the Cathedral Church of Havana. I had already visited this beautiful Cathedral Square where it is located, but on that occasion the church was closed for maintenance and this happened to me on several trips to this place. But on this occasion its doors were open!
Durante mi reciente visita a La Habana Vieja me perdí en ese laberinto de adoquines lleno de colores y sonidos que me hace sentir como si estuviera en una novela antigua. Fue caminando por esas calles que me encontré frente a una de las joyas arquitectónicas más impresionantes de la isla, la Iglesia de la Catedral de La Habana. Ya había visitado esta hermosa Plaza de la Catedral donde se encuentra, pero en esa ocasión la iglesia permaneció cerrada por mantenimirntos y esto me sucedió en varios viajes a este lugar. Pero en esta ocasión sus puertas estaban abiertas!.
This impressive Cathedral is a space that radiates history and solemnity. Its facade, built with limestone, exhibits an ochre tone that varies depending on the time of day. This church, also known as the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception of Havana, is a supreme example of Cuban baroque, although it also has neoclassical influences. Its two asymmetrical towers, one wider than the other, give it a unique and distinctive character. It is said that this peculiarity is due to the fact that the stone available for construction was not enough to build both towers of the same size.
Esta impresionante Catedral es un espacio que irradia historia y solemnidad. Su fachada, construida con piedra caliza, exhibe un tono ocre que varía en dependencia de la hora del día. Esta iglesia, también conocida como la Catedral de la Virgen María de la Inmaculada Concepción de La Habana, es un ejemplo supremo del barroco cubano, aunque también tiene influencias neoclásicas. Sus dos torres asimétricas, una más ancha que la otra, le dan un carácter único y distintivo. Se dice que esta peculiaridad se debe a que la piedra disponible para la construcción no era suficiente para construir ambas torres del mismo tamaño.
Entering the church, I found myself surrounded by an atmosphere of serenity and spirituality. The soft light filtering through the multicoloured stained glass windows created a play of light and shadow that enhanced the beauty of the altars and sculptures. The main altar, made of silver and ebony, is a masterpiece of goldsmithing, a testament to the talent and dedication of the craftsmen of the time. Behind this altar there are three original frescoes, a marvel!
Al entrar en la iglesia, me encontré rodeado de una atmósfera de serenidad y espiritualidad. La suave luz que se filtraba a través de las vidrieras multicolores creaba un juego de luces y sombras que realzaba la belleza de los altares y las esculturas. El altar mayor, realizado en plata y ébano, es una obra maestra de la orfebrería, testimonio del talento y la dedicación de los artesanos de la época. Detrás de este altar hay tres frescos originales, una maravila!.
The floor of the entire church is made of black and white marble. It has a central hall with two rows of benches and an aisle in the centre. This hall is bordered by semicircular arches, from which hang beautiful chandeliers. There is a large dome in front of the Main Altar with an imposing chandelier in the centre. In the side corridors there are several chapels that house different deities, including Our Lady of Loreto, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, Patroness of Cuba, among others.
El suelo de toda la iglesia es de mármol blanco y negro. Tiene un salón central con dos filas de bancos y un pasillo en el centro. Este salón está bordeado por arcos de medio punto, de los que cuelgan hermosas lámparas. Hay una gran cúpula delante del Altar Mayor con una imponente lámpara en el centro. En los pasillos laterales se encuentran varias capillas que albergan a diferentes deidades, entre ellas Nuestra Señora de Loreto, la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba, entre otras.
Beyond its architectural beauty and historical value, the Havana Cathedral is a place of meeting and devotion for the Cuban faithful. During my visit, I had the opportunity to observe people of all ages and backgrounds who came to pray and seek comfort in this sacred space. It is a very visited place and Cubans sometimes travel many kilometers just to get to it.
Más allá de su belleza arquitectónica y valor histórico, la Catedral de La Habana es un lugar de encuentro y devoción para los fieles cubanos. Durante mi visita, tuve la oportunidad de observar a personas de todas las edades y orígenes que acudían a orar y buscar consuelo en este espacio sagrado. Es un lugar muy visitado y los cubanos a veces recorren muchos kilómetros solo para llegar a él.
The Cathedral is a testimony to the faith, art and history of Cuba. It is a place that invites reflection, contemplation and encounter with the transcendent. Visiting it was an enriching experience that will remain engraved in my memory forever. I hope that these photos can convey a part of the magic and charm that this Havana treasure contains.
La Catedral es un testimonio de la fe, el arte y la historia de Cuba. Es un lugar que invita a la reflexión, la contemplación y el encuentro con lo trascendente. Visitarla fue una experiencia enriquecedora que quedará grabada en mi memoria para siempre.
