ROTUNDA - DOME OF MOSTA in MALTA πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ή

in Worldmappin β€’ 2 years ago

Hi all πŸ‘‹πŸ»

Today I want to share with you some captures of my views when we visited this Basilica. ROTUNDA - DOME OF MOSTA in Malta. This was during our 1 year of living there - and our #travels in MALTA πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ή To explore it… 😎

Today’s selection of #highlights will be of 14 #photographs 😎 that are taken with my #iPhone on 13 October 2019 in MOSTA ~ Malta πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ή

Location of the basilica on Google maps, see the yellow star ⭐️:

More information about this basilica / church you can find in their website : Mosta church here!

It states:
”With a diameter of 37 metres, the Mosta Basilica’s dome is considered to be one of the biggest in Europe and ranks ninth among the largest unsupported domes in the world.”

”Outside diameter 56.2 metres. Inside diameter 39.6 metres. Internal height 54.7metres.”

The following information and much more can be found in Wikipedia here!

It states:
”It was built between 1833 and the 1860s to neoclassical designs of Giorgio Grognet de VassΓ©, on the site of an earlier Renaissance church which had been built in around 1614 to designs of Tommaso Dingli.”

As you can see a lot of history there. πŸ€“

Let’s have a look at what I saw now 😎

Another angle from the outside and it’s surrounding buildings.

The rotunda. Look at all the details we can see.

A corridor at the entrance of the Mosta church.

The first thing we notice stepping inside, is the dome. As we just have to look up. We can see the opening is closed with a wooden board today, so that the rain 🌧 doesn’t come through the roof. In the dryer months this is open. πŸ€“

Looking around we see different areas of the church and altars. Many empty seats…

It’s nice to be able to visit a #historical #landmark when not a lot of visitors and tourists are around.

Looking up a bit more closely now as we are in the middle of the dome now. Mesmerising…

We wander around and take all the details in. So much to see. πŸ€“

Beautiful sculptures and paintings.

This lamp catches my eye…

Another capture…

One more look up…

And we walk outside again.
We look back towards the rotunda:

It’s fascinating to imagine how old it is and to see the architectural features from this church.

Even though I am not religious, I do enjoy visiting churches and seeing their architecture and reading up on the history. 😎 How can I not.
Do you like visiting churches because of their history and architecture?

And that’s all for today’s post my friends, join me next time for more #adventures, #stories and #photographs πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘‹πŸ» Even some #artworks once in a while will come by 🎨
Thank you so much for looking, and reading. And if you liked my post, an upvote or re-blog is always welcome πŸ™πŸ»
Hope you enjoyed my photos and seeing the things through my eyes.
Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.

Have a great day all 😎

Enjoy your evening.

Oh the tones of the city!! I’ve never been there and I have no doubts that I need to visit this beautiful place! The Mosta church is stunning!!

Yes, Malta looks like this everywhere. All the houses are a yellow ochre.
It is a beautiful tiny island. With so much history.
I loved visiting it and I am happy I could show it to you @belug πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜Š
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I love visiting churches and temples , it's the history background that fascinates me, not the religious part. Even though, now that I think about it, history and religion are merged throughout the centuries; religion has definitely shaped the history of humanity. Thank you @littlebee4 for guiding us though this outstanding piece of architecture!
P.S. Is it just me or the center of the dome resembles a sunflower?!

Yes, I have the same @marilandia 😊
Religion is the main cause of changing and forming the world and humanity.
You are welcome, thank you so much and I’m happy you joined me in my visit to this church.
It does look like a sunflower or any other large flower 🌻🌼
Have a wonderful day today πŸ‘‹πŸ»

You too enjoy the rest of your day @littlebee4 πŸ™

Thank you kindly πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜Š

Great architectural design. I should also find time to go on adventures and explore the works of art and nature.

Thanks @sherlockee πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘‹πŸ» It does open up a whole now world and one learns and grows so much. It is wonderful. Hope you can do that. Surround yourself by pretty things and nature 😎
Have an awesome day today!

Back in 2011. when I was planning to change the country of living with my family, first on the list was Australia and NZ... when that plan failed, the next one on the list was Malta! The only disadvantage is that it's an island (at least, others presented us like that), but shortly, the offer for Spain came through and we went there... But, seeing these photos, and having some friends there, it wouldn't be the that bad pick at all... It's a beautiful country/island!

For a 200yo church, it is very well preserved! Thanks for sharing!

That’s cool to hear @ph1102 , funny how you ended up in Spain… we changed countries a few times. Soon number 6 πŸ€“πŸ˜‰
To be honest, we couldn’t get used to Malta. We tried really hard, but it wasn’t for us.
It was so dusty due to the construction everywhere… air quality was bad and not much nature left on the tiny islands. To get a rental also was hard and the prices are crazy. Construction everywhere and buildings do collapse due to wrongly build.
The company relocated us as they moved from Gibraltar to Malta. 150 people shipped over… nobody remained.
It is proper island living and you can see it all in a week so to speak. For a few years it would be ok and you just need to chose wisely what area to live in.
But on the other hand, for holidays I do recommend it, as it is so unique. So beautiful… So much to see and so much history. Structures older than the pyramids. Just imagine that. Beautiful architecture and lovely people.

We were there almost 1 year and the pandemic started, and we moved out during it.

The church is stunning, will share some more beautiful areas soon πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š
Have a great evening!

Thanks for sharing your experience of Malta! Now I don't regret not getting there, but, as you said, it would be nice to pay a visit as a tourist destination!

we changed countries a few times. Soon number 6 πŸ€“πŸ˜‰

I got that from your posts! πŸ˜ƒ I could maybe change 3-4 times in a lifetime, but 6 is already a lot and you have time to change another 10-15 countries... πŸ˜‚

Cheers!

You are welcome @ph1102 happy to share our experiences. Yes, for holidays it is amazing. When you do one day, let me know. I tell you the places to go to.

I know it’s a lot… hahaha 🀣 but it has formed me throughout my life, don’t want it any other way.
You could too… why not. I believe we are about the same age. πŸ˜‰
I hope to stop moving countries after our next move, as I really want to settle down now. And traveling will be enough after that, just for holidays πŸ˜‰

Cheers!

Inside and out, this basilica is beautiful art... Thank you for this wonderful post!... What a beautiful building !!!!...
