A day in La Coruna, Spain

in Worldmappin2 years ago

Whenever I travel to a place for the first time, I always go to Pinmapple to see where my trusted Hivers recommend visiting. Most of the time I find some pretty good inspiration. Like this time to La Coruna in Spain, I found two posts about the Tower of Hercules. I like lighthouses and have been to a couple in Taiwan recently. This one will make a nice contrast especially since it was built by the Romans.

According to Google map, the walk from La Coruna town to the Tower is less than 2km and takes about 45 min to walk, in reality it only took me about half an hour. The walk is lovely, the light gentle Atlantic breeze accompanying me, along the coast going slightly uphill. You barely notice that because the view is so consuming. I love the antiqued lamppost on the road, it adds so much character to the whole area, and look just so perfect in front of the Tower.

Once I got to the top of the hill, it's another short walk out towards the Tower. I imagine it would be quite a harsh walk during rain or shine. Luckily I got neither, just the perfect weather under the clear blue skies.

The Tower of Hercules is a UNESCO site and it is said to be the oldest surviving lighthouse that dates back to the Roman times in 1st BC Source. It cost €3 to enter, a very affordable price given its historical value. You can climb up to the top of the Tower, but I wasn't too bothered as I figured the view wouldn't be that different from ground level. I'd much rather view the actual tower itself, plus the view looking back to the town centre, and outwards towards the sea and the massive compass was really quite remarkable.

What I found quite unusual was the exterior of the tower. At 55 meters tall, it may seem a normal stone built structure, but if you look at it carefully you'll notice slanted ridges are built across the uniform stonework, almost like someone had taken a ruler and drew upward lines across the tower

Next stop back to town. I always try to find a market when I travel to Europe, in La Caruna it was half and half. I found a market and it looked promising from the outside. When I went inside, it was really impressive. Two curved sky windows split across the ceiling, and a larger one at the end of the building was snucked below them. What a beautiful sight. Sadly most of the market stalls were closed and there was only a handful of customers.

In the afternoon I spent the rest of the time walking around La Coruna town. The Maria Pita Plaza was a magnificent large square, flanked by the Town Hall on one side. Not sure what other buildings I missed as I had not made a list of the landmarks. There's probably a cathedral or church of some sort that I should have seen, there's always one in a European town or city.

The port was on the other side of Maria Pita Plaza. It was pretty impressive to catch a glimpse of our cruise ship in between the buildings. It looks so small, but don't let your eyes deceive you here.

Across the road from the port and our cruise ship a bank of buildings lined the road. The small frame shutters look so pretty like a layer of intricate white lace covering the windows.

I spent the rest of my time in La Coruna just wandering around the town center as I couldn't venture too far away due to the limited time we had here.

And very soon it was time to head back to our cruise ship for our next destination. I had Snowpea with me of course. If you have entered my HPUD Guessing Contest, you would have seen her around with me and probably confirmed one of the locations already. I will be announcing my May HPUD Guessing Contest tomorrow as there were loads of entries this month, just need a little time to get my announcement post together.

Wow! The views of and from that tower are impressive. What a gorgeous day to be out and about. Is this your second cruise?

Not trip related… but I love your little divider!

IMG_6353.png

I think this is the cutest/coolest divider I have spotted on the blockchain. 😍

I concur! I love that divider! @dfinney!

Thank you for your kind words guys! It's always nice when someone appreciates your work 🙏🏻💓

Oh!! Do you do it on the side? Could you DM me? dswigle3637
That is so awesome! @gabrielatravels

Sent you a friend request ☺️

I first saw the tower from the other Pinmapple posts, but seeing it with my own eyes was so impressive, the fact it was a gorgeous day probably helped as well. This is actually my third cruise since last March 😅 (plus 2 others about 10 years ago), been picking up some very good last-minute bargains as they work out a lot cheaper than normal holidays 😄

I commissioned @gabrielatravels to design this for me the other year, I love how it blends in both UK and Taiwan when I was still living in Taiwan. I'm sure she will be very please to know that you and @dswigle like it so much!

You are deep into the cruise lifestyle now! That is fantastic. 😍

Confirmed no. 3 is La Coruna.😎

😁 all will be revealed tomorrow, but you know it all

Haha, it's tomorrow here now and a good morning.

Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍

Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!

Want to have your post on the map too?

  • Go to Pinmapple
  • Click the get code button
  • Click on the map where your post should be (zoom in if needed)
  • Copy and paste the generated code in your post (Hive only)
  • Congrats, your post is now on the map!

Doesn't Pinmapple only show you the posts that have been curated though? I know I have a bunch of cool stuff I did through Pinmapple but it doesn't show up because it wasn't part of the top three or a runner up. I could be wrong though. This looks like a beautiful place! I love the compass inlaid in the ground. That is really cool.

The default view on Pinmapple shows the Editor's Choice ie posts we've curated and is over 28k since we've started the project. There is a toggle where users can switch to see everything that is pinned to Pinmapple which is over 97k pins but unfortunately that toggle and the filter isn't working at the moment, but it is on the dev's to do list. Once that is available, you can switch between the full view and the Editor's Choice and filter by users, or tags.

We're aware many users pin all sorts of cool stuff on Pinmapple which may or may not be travel related, or it doesn't make the cut as we get so much good stuff all the time. That said, it's really great that people build up their own map with so much different content, and personally I find it so much easier to find a post on Pinmapple without having to scroll through my blog.

Thanks for dropping by, as always I appreciate it Bozz

Thanks for the follow up! I figured you would have some good info in reply to my comment. Pinmapple has been one of my favorite communities to add content to over the years.

Hi @livinguktaiwan and Snowpea, you seem to have a great trip in La Coruna. It's good to have Pinmapple to get to know which is good place to visit. I like the walking path the the Hercules Tower, you might walk faster than other people. And the view from the tower is stunning. Besides, the town is beautiful too. Some corners look very peaceful. Thanks for taking me there today.

Pinmapple is always my first port of call when I'm looking for somewhere to visit in a new city. You never know what gems you find!

Although I only spent a few hours in La Coruna, the few places I went were very pleasant.

无敌啊!天色好像水彩画上去一般!建筑物也很有年代感。正点

靚到好假哦? 😁

如果单单丢一张照片上来,真的会以为是AI画😮

It's so cool that you and Snowpea were able to visit La Coruña. I like La Coruña a lot, of all the Galician cities I know, I like it the best because of the vibes there. Maybe is because of the sea. There is a lot to do and the visit to the Tower of Hercules is not to be missed.

If I remember correctly one of my first articles in Hive was about a visit to the Tower of Hercules, but at that time I didn't even know how to use pinmapple. 🙈

Oh! That's unfortunate! That's an excuse to go back again 😁

The Tower of Hercules looks majestic and sturdy, very cool.

La Coruna Town is also very clean. Well, I think That's the European standard. I love the statue, the huge building and the ship, all are wonderful 👍

The tower is very impressive, and the fact it was built so long ago, and is still standing and operating is just amazing.

cruise ship

omg, you can see the same ship in my last #Pinmapple post. Maybe they are the same :) because in Galataport's ship also visits #Spain.

I just checked your post, the cruise ship at Galataport is a different one, but there are so many nowadays, they all look so similar.

Galataport looks very nice and modern, hopefully it will bring loads of cruise ships and tourists to the city

Yeah you are right, thank you for your kindly comment🙏🏻

Europe is so beautiful. Wished I stayed there instead of my own country. On another note, I'm amazed by Roman construction. So much of their architecture still stands today even after thousands of years.

The Romans' were very intelligent people in deed, they have left so much legacy even after so many years, and when you think back in those days they had no technology like we have today, yet they still managed to build or create so many impressive objects and buildings.

Wow - that lighthouse is very impressive - and built by the Romans - quite amazing how it has survived all these years ! Looks like a lovely place to visit !

We were only there for about 6 hours, I reckon we only just scratched the surface, still very nice though

Muy hermoso lugar 🤩🤩

Yes, it's a very nice city

A great view of the Tower of Hercules! I was impressed that it is still a working lighthouse, even though it was built in the Second Century! To this day, it still shines a light on those sailing the sea. I found the market impressive and I love the entire square, I love the way Europe built its cities. Everything you ever needed is right there.

Thanks for taking us along! Waves to Snowpea!

The market building was beautiful and I love how the light comes through the ceiling. It was just very unfortunate that only a handful of stalls were open, and didn't have the market vibe.

Snowpea says Hi and hope you have a great weekend

That is unfortunate, but, you may get to go another time with better results. You are such a detail person, one of the reasons that your posts are so wonderful.

Snowpea is adorable! How did she come to be?
The weekend has arrived! Yay!

A beautiful destination! The landscape is so lovely and the center is worth exploring even if the stay is short.

Being so close to La Coruna, but never been there, after reading and seeing your photos made me thing of stopping by on day!

slanted ridges are built across the uniform stonework

Impressive result, and great detail!

Wow that is such an old lighthouse and the view was so great from there. I am going to Chattanooga Tennessee soon. I should get on Pinmapple. I always plan on posting and forget to look before I go!
