Another day, another Christmas market. We are in the middle of the worldmappin winterchallenge and see so many light installations, markets, and winter vibes around the world here in curation.
So on Sunday, I decided to go out again and enjoy a little bit of the German Christmas market traditions in Olching, a small village close to Munich not far from here.
The Olching Christmas market takes place on all four Advent weekends on Nöscherplatz. It is always on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
I met a few friends of mine for lunch and then we walked to the Christmas market all together around 4 pm. It was freakin cold but the sun was shining and the light was great when we entered the market.
As we just had already eaten the food was not that interesting for us, but the classic in Olching is the Feuerzangenbowle. The Feuerzangenbowle is a punch based on red wine. Despite the name, the drink is not a punch (to be drunk cold). After adding various spices and possibly fruit juices, “fire tongs” are placed on the punch vessel and a cone-shaped piece of sugar soaked in rum is lit, which drips into the liquid while burning.
We drank our first one to warm up and talked about life. My grandma had just passed on Friday, so we talked about her. Also, New Year's travel is coming up, and we shared ideas. This time of the year is always great for reflecting on the year and dreaming about the future 😊
The sun went down and it started to get colder and darker. The cold was not that nice but the lighting got more beautiful now. Once we had drunken the first round my friend went for more and I walked around the market to take some pictures for you guys 😉
At every Christmas market in Germany, you will find handcraft, drinks, and food as well as homemade Christmas treats, and a great music program.
For food and drinks you can find Crepes, Raiberdatschi, Churros (@avdesing yes, we also have churros in Germany 😉), sweets, tarte flambée, Raclette, hot chestnuts, punch, Feuerzangenbowle, mulled wine, and hot chocolate.
Of course, people love to go shopping in those markets as well. It's nice to walk and look around. Find some Christmas gifts even or just some decorations. For me, it's nice to watch the people with happy faces in their stands or outside. All the sparkles and lights are super nice!
In Olching in addition to a diverse music program on stage, a glassblower (2nd weekend in Advent) and a chainsaw artist (4th weekend in Advent) are always presenting their craft in our open hut. It is a very nice place to escape everyday life and hang out with some friends. We had some more drinks and then headed home to not freeze to death 😄
Next weekend traditionally, the AmperPerchten come to Olching again.
With torches and immersed in fog, they will march in with their scary wooden masks. What at first glance doesn't fit into the Christmas flair of the Olching Christmas market is only supposed to bring good and happiness. - I will see if we can make it there as well. 🤓
I wish you guys a nice rest of the week - Enjoy the winter challenge and all the posts that come with it!
Cheers & Un abrazo,
Liz

Yes, tremendous tradition. People get scared when they first see them, but they are actually here to bring joy 😅
Christmas is not a season or a date, it is a feeling. And nothing represents this in Germany like the Christmas market.
