Walking a winter trail at Asitzkopf Mountain, Leogang, Austria (Fotos + Video)

Since we are in the middle of our worldmappin winterchallenge I will tell you about an adventure my wife and I had in the middle of December. It had been almost two years ago, that we decided to escape the dark cold German daily life and finish the end of the year in Leogang, Austria with a lot more snow, wellness, and good food.

IMG_0595.jpeg

So we jumped in the car and drove all the way from Munich to Leogang, checked in at the hotel, and enjoyed ourselves a little bit.

If you know me a little bit you also have to know that I never go anywhere without checking out the surroundings - doesn´t matter how good the food is and how relaxing the wellness part of the hotel is. For me, I can enjoy both even more if during the day I go out and go on an adventure.

Normally in a place like that with so much snow I would go right away to the ski slope, putting on my snowboard and enjoy it all day. But Elena doesn´t know how to snowboard yet, so we tried something new. - We went hiking in the snow.

I checked out the local trails and decided real quick that the best option for us to try out would be the winter hiking trail at Asitzkopf Mountain. From the hotel, we had one free ride to the first stop kleiner Asitzkopf (small Asitzhead) and from there we would start the 1:45hrs hike to the top of the mountain großer Asitzkopf (big Asitzhead) and to the viewpoint before we would go back.

Bildschirmfoto 2024-12-05 um 16.14.39.png

So much for the plan. That moment I discovered that Elena actually never gone on a lift in her life before 😅 - so it was real first for her, super exciting and a little scary - just like a good adventure has to be 😁.

IMG_0625.jpeg

IMG_0628.jpeg

The lift was pretty fast and in only about 20 minutes we already arrived at the first stop. - Our base and start for the hike. The weather was just perfect. The sun came out and the air was thin but fresh and nice!

We found the trail really quickly as it was signed haha - welcome to Austria, apparently they love to explain just as much as we Germans do. We just had to pass by the hut/restaurant/bar and were "right on track".

IMG_0632.jpeg

IMG_0634.jpeg

IMG_0635.jpeg

Actually, before this hike, I didn´t even know that snow hiking existed! When I first heard of it I was wondering who would freely hike up a snowy trail to enjoy the view, if at the same time it's much more fun to drive up with the lift and go down snowboarding... but ok, now I would make a new experience and try it out... - of course, it was just like expected!

Super hard, exhausting, and not as much fun as riding down ahhaha but on the other hand a great workout! Aaaand of course the view was just spectacular. First, we crossed a little forest surrounded by winter wonderland trees, and then we came to the platform of the mountain views down to the valley... sometimes a cloud passed right through us not permitting any view, but even that was great.

IMG_0658.jpeg

The higher we walked the tougher it got as the air was getting thinner and the clouds became more and more. - That means we hardly could enjoy any view. At one point we even thought of giving up... but then we decided to go on and finish this. I really wanted to do this and see also the other side of the mountain. So we went on and finally reached the top - the big Asnitzkopf at 1913m

IMG_0682.jpeg

It was just stunning. Almost the same moment when we reached the top, the clouds went to the side and the sun came out again. So we could enjoy the great view from all sides very much. We took a small break and decided to go even further. We passed the lift and came to a playground for kids, covered in snow. It must be very fun to play here as a kid with that view in summer!!!

IMG_0685.jpeg

IMG_0718.jpeg

Following that path, we arrived at the viewpoint, where we could look to all sides. Of course again there we could find a sign - a panorama picture even of all the mountains in front of us with name and altitude.

There we stayed for about 30 minutes taking a break, enjoying the sun and the view to the fullest. We were all by ourselves and it was just great. Now I could understand why people would do that in winter... to be all alone hahaha...

After a while of not moving so much it got cold again though, so we decided to go back. I was very happy that we only had to go back to big Asitzkopf and then the rest would be going downstairs... but as you can imagine it wasn´t as easy at it seems either, as the snow was pretty deep and slippery. We decided to half walk and half slide down. Of course, we were way faster on the way back than on the way up.

Going down we had the most fun. Of course, we fell down some times but it was all snow, so not dangerous at all.. and we had the perfect closing for playing around in it as well. We enjoyed the view and slid down catching each other, throwing snowballs, and laughing hard. We were so fast at the base station that I couldn´t believe it. All in all it took us way more than the promised 1:45hrs from that app haha, but it was totally worth it.

We decided to take one more break with that view at the bar and ordered some drinks to start the evening right before we went back down to the hotel where well-deserved wellness and great food were waiting for us.

And look @ninaeatshere I even found a picture of the dessert I had that evening ;)

It was the perfect ending for a perfect day <3

I hope you liked it and enjoy the winter challenge just as much as I do!

Cheers,
Liz

Oh, I can't wait to go skiing again! :)

When and where are you going @godfish?

I don't know yet, I am leaving for Brazil first :)) Then perhaps Granada.

Cool! Where to Brazil? There are a. lot of free spots on the map to fill! Looking forward to your travel posts @godfish😎☀️

Yep, I was told I shouldn't take pictures if I don't want my phone stolen though ;)

Let's see how safe I'd feel.

Sao Paolo, Rio, and Brasilia for sure, perhaps something else on the way.

Haha, well I guess it depends where you are and at what time @godfish. I am sure you have a good feeling for that. - no excuses 😂😂☀️😄
What about Manaus and the Iguazu?

Hehe, these two are like 2,500 far from each other, and not really on out route either :)

Oh wow, I can imagine it was super hard and exhausting to hike in snow, it is not easy but the experience and views that you got, and the moment when the clouds let you see awesome views was worth taking this hike. Heaven on earth!

Yes it was worth it in the end. Also nice to have so much snow around us once again. The past few years we didn´t have much that much snow here in Germany anymore. It reminded me a lot of my childhood @mipiano😂 I guess that's why we had so much fun running down as well. - activating the inner child 😎😘 - Thanks for stopping by and glad you liked the post.

As a Sardinian, being surrounded by blue sea and evergreen plants all the time, I feel amazed.
This kind of posts makes me notice that I've never tried something so different, I never had the chance so far, and shows me how many different ways of living there are all around us.
Your tale was so interesting, and accompanied by wonderful pictures too! I love the landscapes and your attention for details.
Thanks for sharing :)

Oh wow, well you live in paradise already @alecaltab! Why go somewhere else 😀😎☀️
Glad you liked the post anyways and you could travel through it with me ❤️

Oh, we could discuss about paradise for hours... but in the end we are humans, we are always attracted by what we cannot have 😁
...and Worldmappin, in this scenario, is like a shop window full of tasty and fragrant sweets for a child with no money 😂

Oh yes we could ❤️❤️ haha. You are absolutely right @alecaltab. Well @woldmappin is a window full of opportunities 😎☀️👍

The joy and excitement of walking in the snow could only be described so beautifully. The view of the white snow at the top of the mountain is marvelous... I admire your courage. It doesn't look easy to reach the top of that mountain. The pictures you have framed are beautiful. I feel like reaching out and making a snowball. Maybe you secretly threw it to your friend while he was walking... You already deserve dessert on the way back. It was a pleasant and beautiful adventure. I felt myself in that adventure while reading the article. Congratulations.

Awww thanks @passenger777! Those words coming from such a great writer like you mean a lot to me ❤️😎 - Glad you came by and could join us hiking up that mountain in the snow. - It was very hard to reach the top, much harder than I thought.. reminded me a bit of climbing the volcano in Guatemala, cause there the ground was also slippery and you just get up so slowly... it feels like forever until you are up, but when you finally do the view is stunning and you are just happy.

Oh wow just look at all that snow😍😍😍fabulous sights, I could see myself staying in such an area in a cozy wood cabin with plenty of warmth

Haha yeah the cabin is the nicest place and the terrace. Sitting down, having a nice drink and enjoying the view 😎😎

Winterwonderland, nice content. 😎

Thanks @manncpt. Glad you liked it.

Wow, very impressive pictures! Saalbach/Leogang is a very nice Skiarea, i have been there many times and i know every slope so far :) I think you have been to the "Alte Schmiede" restaurant on top of the Asitzkogel? That´s such a special spot! Hope you enjoyed 🤗

I sure did enjoy it @weitblicker! I would have loved to snowboard there as well. It looked like a great ski area!! 😎☀️ - Maybe next time ☀️
Yes, the restaurant was nice - I don´t remember the name though, but the view was spectacular and the drinks very welcome ;)

Thanks @worldmappin for the service :)

Wuaoo what a magically wintry trip 😁🥶.

The views are amazing, I enjoyed your whole experience, every uphill challenge and downhill slide.

The photo of the paronamic sign I didn't understand it, I stayed for a while watching until I saw the photo where you appear for in front of it. 🤣😁.

Good thing you're not contesting, because this post definitely deserves to be in the top spots @lizanomadsoul

Beautiful everything, I don't know the snow, that's a girlish wish I want to fulfill, although my bones start to feel very cold, in summer 😁.

Glad you like it @soyunasantacruz. It sure has been a unique experience hiking in the snow. For me hiking in normal conditions is already tough... hiking in the snow is next level... haha but the weather was great and of course, spending free time is always nice. Oh - Having that much snow around it really cool to be honest on many levels haha but only for a few days. After that you will miss the warm - believe me, after living in the Caribbean, the winter here seems very long 😅

Oh what a workout. The views are stunning. You guys were lucky that just at the point you reached the top it opened up again and the sun came out.
I so would hike that trail too. Awesome!

I can imagine all the fun going down. The sliding, laughing and throwing snowballs. So much fun.
What an experience for the both of you.
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed reading and viewing the photos. 🤗😘

Glad you liked it @littlebee4! We should have made a snowman on the way to give yours a friend with a great view.. didn´t have that idea back then. Walking up was quite a challenge, but definitely worth it. The feeling when the clouds opened up was just amazing, like a gift for all the effort 😅❤️ - but yes you saw well, the way back was the best part 😎 Next time I let you know and you can come join in ☀️😉

It would have been fun to build up there a snowman. A great idea for next time when you go on such a hike.

It looked like sooo much fun. The views were so worth it.
That would be fun one day. Who knows… 😉

Yeah maybe one day... or we just go snowboarding again 😎😎😎 less hard and even more fun haha

Or a combination from both. Hiking up with board on back and snowboarding down… 🏂🏂🏂

That would be also awesome :D

This was a very enjoyable trip, you can see from your faces that you felt very happy, and some of the pictures you shared were also really amazing.
Have a nice day my aunt

Lol auntie? glad you liked it @riyat! i guess in Indonesia you don´t see much snow, or are they some high mountains as well?

Christmas is amazing in Europe. Wish I could get there and spend at least a Christmas the Austrian way. Happy holidays !BBH !LOLZ

Well its cold and tranquil. Not sure if amazing :D Just winter wonderland - most of the times ;) How is it on your side of the world?
Happy holidays to you too @day1001!

We only get the cold breeze around here. Sometimes super typhoons also arrive at this time of the year. Generally the Spirit of Christmas fills the air. Have a wonderful Christmas !BBH !LOLZ

See, the spirit is the most important @day1001 - you also get that without any snow.

Agree on that too. Happy holidays !BBH !LOLZ

I'm not a fan of snow hiking and I saw people doing it while I was skiing. Although I tried to slide down without the ski (slide on the butt) when I realized going down felt like dangerous for me. Hahaha! My legs need to be trained for hiking.

It was very hard to hike up tbh. I would always prefer snowboarding or skiing as well :D - but the view was quite nice. I had sore muscles for 3 days after that :D

Haha sure, will be difficult to get out of bed.
