Visiting the Main Parish Church of Sancti Spíritus

Hello, friends. This week I had the opportunity to visit the Main Parish Church of Sancti Spíritus, a place I had passed by on many occasions, but had never had the opportunity to visit.

The first thing I discovered was that I was in the presence of the oldest church in Cuba. This colonial building of Romanesque and baroque style was declared a National Monument in 1977. One of the most striking places in the city, from the outside it is majestic and its sculptures make it even more striking. Built of lime and stone, in the seventeenth century.

The funny thing is that, although I always saw it imposing from the outside, I never stopped to think about its history. Well, during this visit I learned that in the seventeenth century it was attacked by pirates. Something that caught my attention, since the coast is more than 60 km away and in this city there is no river that allows navigation.

Unfortunately, the 40-meter high tower was closed to the public due to a restoration process. But I was able to appreciate the interior of the church. As soon as you enter it is impossible not to see what in my opinion was the most striking thing: the impressive ceiling, entirely made of wood. I was not able to imagine the work and effort used for such a work.

Inside I also found what I expected to see in a church: simple but beautiful altars, that atmosphere of peace and recollection that only these places can offer. It was an experience that left me wanting to explore more about the history and architecture of my city.

If you ever pass through here, don't hesitate to make a stop at the Main Parish Church of Sancti Spíritus. I promise you won't regret it. And I hope that on that occasion the tower is restored, the view from this must be great.
