Reservoir with a view of active volcano mountain

There are several reservoirs scattered around Indonesia and a lot of them are located in highlands. Selorejo reservoir is one of them. Located in the highlands of East Java offering a background of Mt Kelud, an active volcano mountain in the province. There are several ways to enter the reservoir and spots for different activities. This time, I visited a spot that is known to local fishermen and people who enjoy fishing. This spot is a lot more adventurous than the "tourist" spot that requires some entrance fee to also enjoy the amenities. In this reservoir, you can walk around the area, enjoying fresh air and also taking a boat trip circling this massive reservoir.

The trip to get into the place took about an hour drive for me. Throughout the meandering road, I saw beautiful scenes of pine trees and trees that are also changing their colors. This road is even more beautiful from early February to March as the flower blooms beautifully. It was also drizzling here and there that I almost felt somewhat unenthusiastic. Reservoir isn't something I am too interested in visiting for a walk. Many reservoirs in Indonesia aren't walkable/ jogging friendly, the only thing that you can do around is fishing or taking a boat trip. This time though, I had to take a walk through a muddy wet soil just to get near the water with the boats parked around. As usual, there was also trash everywhere that wasn't pleasant to the eye yet as soon as I looked up, the misty mountain, the hills and the mountain offered such a breathtaking view. It reminds me of lakes in Bali that also offer amazing highland views.Maybe after all, visiting a reservoir during a cloudy day wasn't a bad idea.

From the distance, I saw a man standing on a small boat. As I heard from the chatter, that guy was looking for fish for a while. I also overheard a lot of chatter about fishing and how they don't want to sit next to the man with an umbrella because of his bait. I mean, I know too little about fishing, so I didn't get what they were fussing about. I was also getting bitten by mosquitoes a lot and started to wonder how those fishermen were able to have some patience while getting bitten by mosquitoes, and possibly a dengue one.

I walked around for a bit until I was nearby the boats. While walking, I saw some birds trying to get fish in the small "island" in the middle of reservoir. There were a few of them but they moved swiftly so I was unable to capture them.

I was also approached by a man who offered the ride around the reservoir. I declined it because I wasn't intending to stay around more. Besides, I did that many times when I was a kid so it wasn't something I was curious about of trying. I was just checking out the boats and walked further nearby people who tried to fish. It was a different sight than the "paid" ones where it was more intended for a recreational place than this one.

Sometimes I think the most beautiful places in the country aren't those intended for "recreational" purposes. That place is one of many faces of "real" indonesia. The ones that we often see around is often commercialized and not too affordable even for locals.

DSC09104.JPG

After about 20 minutes, I left the place because I got bitten by mosquitoes and wasn't using any sprays. Since this is the rainy season, dengue fever is in full swing. So, to avoid that, I left the place a bit earlier than what I intended. But overall, it was such a refreshing walk given the air and the overall atmosphere was nice.

On my way back, I showed my mom how to take pictures with my camera. I showed her the new things I've been learning. It was also unfortunate because the volcano mountain was shrouded by the mist.

Hi Mac

It looks like a lovely place, but it doesn't sound like you had the best experience. They should really hire someone to clean up the trash at least especially if they want to open it up as a tourist destination spot. The mosquitoes would have been a big turn off for me too.

They already have one for "tourist" spot. Meanwhile that place is the free and open space and often visited by locals or just anyone who likes fishing. Although to be fair, since it also belongs to similar management, they should do that too. It's only wishful thinking to hope these beautiful places all around would be free of litters. The only clean ones are those for "tourist" and intended to be visited by foreigners too.

That's the sad reality. It happens here as well that the open parks look terrible after busy weekends and the litter ends up in the river systems. It annoys me no end, but people just don't care enough to manage their own waste and the management don't care enough to enforce it. The cleanest places in the world are the ones with the heftiest fines for littering. If you can't teach them by asking nicely, you have to make them do it by hitting them where it hurts, that is just the sad reality of it.

did you buy a new camera cem?
the boat looks small, I will not dare to hop on into them. hahahah

Not yet, I am still deciding between fuji or sony. There were some good canon but used, although buying used seems like a bad idea :D especially for cameras.

I was looking forward to see the volcano but it seems that those mist did their thing hihi. Still the view is nice and I haven't tried to wonder in a reservoir before so I might try it if there's any here in my country.

Same here I can't stand to be bitten by thosw mosquitoes. So far I didn't have aby dengue fever before that's why I'm cautious when it comes to those mosquitoes here.

Is it true that once you get dengue you didn't get it anymore? I got it when I was a kid and almost died from it. I guess it's really that scary because someone's life could be at risk from those dengue.

Also yeah, the mist hid the mountain very well. I plan on visiting the volcano because it's only an hour away. When the mountain was erupting, I could even see it from my balcony and thought we had snow but it was ash rain😂 It's just that it's rainy season and the road is slippery over there. So, I kinda miss my chance of going there. Maybe sometime next year.

I don't really know if that is true . If it is then it's really great for those who had suffered from it already that they became immune to it. It's scary to have dengue fever because it's life threathening also.. There's a case already here in our town.

Haha . If I was that I will sing Let it go while the improvised snow is pouring down 😅. I never seen a volcano before that's erupting upclose. Maybe that was terrifying especially those lavas coming out ..
I hope you can do it next time already.😊

haha being immune to dengue is certainly a super power living here since it's life threatening too. It was not terrifying but was interesting to see, too bad we didn't have social media and I was only a kid. If it were happening now, I would document the hell out of it. Not to mention, my camera could also take the picture of flowing lava just from my balcony. Although the rain ash definitely wasn't something fun.

Yeah those ashes causes a lot of damage especially to farmers. Also it's bad for our health..definitely not. a good snow.
We have a lot of volcano here in the Philippines but mostly of them have gone to deep sleep already..
I'm really interested to witness one hihi, would love to take a photo of the lava coming out.

The paid places are made to keep you entertained and you won't usually see anything out of the ordinary. But natural places like this are better for both scenery and unusual things. I love the photos. Did your mom take any photos after you taught her? One of these maybe ?

haha yeah, unusual like getting bitten by mosquitoes😂. My mom only takes my pictures, she's not too interested taking leave picture or landscapes hehe. I was just teaching her to take bokeh style and also depth of field stuff.

There may be some unusual things that we don't want, hahaha. Flies are a big problem all over the world. Why don't you share some photos that your mother took? 😂
