The city of Aix les Bains is not often included in organized tourist routes, although it is a fairly well-known resort in France. Even its name means something like "water on the lake". We stayed for the night in the suburbs of the city in the motel "Campanile", and went to the city on a sightseeing tour.
The city is located on the shore of Lake Bourget, and on the opposite side is the Bauges mountain range, and in France, Aix les Bains is considered a popular balneological resort.
Our decision for visiting the quiet Aix-les-Bains town in Savoie was because it has interesting history and architectural splendor. During the "Belle Époque" (19th century), the resort gained fame as one of the best places for rest and treatment. The richest residents of France and Europe bought and built houses here. Lake Bourget and the mild climate attracted nobles and aristocrats here. It is here, in Aix-les-Bains, that many beautiful mansions built by the rich of old Europe are concentrated.
The history of the city is lost in the centuries and is directly connected with Lake Bourget and its healing waters. Probably, this is the oldest city in the Savoy region. But at present it is a provincial city, languid by the sun, which does not amaze the imagination, but in which it is pleasant to spend a few hours. As it seemed to me, its main residents are French pensioners and elderly vacationers.
It was a great pleasure to walk along these narrow streets, and we truly admired the cultural heritage of this town. We felt like a part of old days. Each building is unique.
It is easy to navigate the city. From the station building you need to go up and then turn left. There are signs everywhere. In just five minutes, you will see the luxurious Casino building - practically the center of Aix-les-Bains.
The Casino Grand Cercle is one of the main attractions of Aix-les-Bains. The building is pompous on a hill, like the entire central part of the city. It was opened back in 1850.
You can absolutely freely enter the casino hall and see what it looks like from the inside. Of particular value are the mosaics and stained-glass windows, which appeared a little later, I think, in 1880. I don’t remember who made them, but everything looks really great.
Walking along Casino you can see a bunch of shops, hotels, bars, restaurants. The city has good shopping, many branded stores. In the perfume shop, we were given three samples of French perfume with the bottle we bought. There is a pedestrian street with cafés and restaurants nearby. The street is quite long. Another five minutes, and the very center of the city of Aix-les-Bains will appear...

To tell the truth, there are not many historical monuments in the city. As it often happened in those distant times, cities were founded in places where there were healing waters to provide treatment and recovery for Roman legionnaires, but over time they tripled their importance. This was the case here and only in the middle of the 18th century did the resort become fashionable and the city was revived. Many beautiful mansions and villas appeared.
The Campana Arch, which remains from the times of the Roman Empire, the burial monument of Senator Campana, and it was also the entrance to the Roman baths. This object dates back to about the 1st century AD. The remains of the Roman baths are located under the modern municipal baths. I really liked the building of the main baths. The baths are one more great monument of antiquity. The hydrotherapy center consists of old and new parts.
Next to the arch is the tourist center of Aix-les-Bains. Everything here is within walking distance from the central pedestrian street. As you can see, the city takes the safety of vacationers seriously. We have seen such armed people more than once. This has never happened in Nice, although the terrorist attack took place there.

After exploring the old center, we headed towards the deepest lake in France - Bourget. The way to the lake was not short, since the city center is the upper part of Aix-les-Bains, and the lake is the lower part of Aix-les-Bains. I walked to the lake, but it is better to take a bus. It takes about 30–40 minutes on foot. Decent! It is difficult to get lost, since there are signs everywhere, but it is still far.
We've arrived. The lake is mesmerizing with its cold beauty... In summer, there is a beach here. There are water slides and a tennis court. The area around the lake is very well-equipped, there is a promenade.
Despite the fact that Aix-les-Bains is a resort town, the traditions here, in terms of food, are quite typical for France. This means that at 2 pm everything closes, and you can starve to death. We managed to pop into a café at a quarter to two, but they refused to serve us. Only the magic words "plat de jure", which means "plate of the day", did their job, and we were served food within 5–7 minutes. As a rule, "plat de jure" is an inexpensive dish, always fresh, as it is often ordered and served quickly. In our case, it was rice and meat with cheese sauce.
For me, Aix-les-Bains turned out to be a passing city. It did not charm me and did not arouse much interest. I think it is not worth going there specifically on an excursion. People come there to be treated in the waters for several weeks, to drink some water, to warm up, to undergo a course of water therapy, or use this city as a transit stop, considering that the city of Annecy, and the Abbey of Hautecombe, and the Gorge of Fieres is nearby.
Aix les Bains is very small, you can come here even for a few hours, walk around, have a coffee. By the way, Aix-les-Bains has its own hippodrome, in general an elite place. Here people enjoy life. In Savoy there are no global world problems. Here people live by completely different principles - they enjoy nature, architecture and communication with each other! Of course, the local climate is healthy and ideal for those who want to get some treatment.
