While traveling from Saranda, our first stop was only in Himara, because we planned to stop there for a while and visit Ali Pasha's fortress - Porto Palermo fortress. The first thing that caught my eye was a bay of extraordinary beauty with quiet, calm and crystal clear water.
The lagoon made a very vivid impression on me: the clear, bright blue sea, the deserted shore, and even the cave, in which they planned to make a base for Soviet submarines, looked like a natural creation.
By the way, the USSR abandoned the idea of a military base in Albania back in the 60s of the last century, then the Chinese tried to finish it, but it never worked out. Now there is nothing here that reminds us of Albania's militaristic past.
We drove up to the fortress at the end of the day and stopped at the parking lot. The parking lot is a compacted wasteland on the shore. I did not notice any security, no payment place, no toilet. There are many cars and trailers with local numbers - it is clear that the residents of the surrounding settlements love this pleasant place.
The fortress isjust seven kilometers south of the city of Himara, located on a small green peninsula. Actuallyt, it is a natural island, which was attached to the shore by a sand dam.
You need to walk about 300 meters to the fortress along this dam, the road is flat, but there is not a patch of shade on the way, and the path itself requires attention - stones.
At the entrance to the fortress are the oldest olive trees - they have seen a lot. Entrance through the fortress gates, at the entrance there is a ticket office. The ticket price is 300 leks (3 dollars).
After the bright summer sun, it seems so dark in the fortress that you can't see where to put your foot. After a few minutes, your eyes get used to it, and you can already discern the interior of the fortress - stone vaults, gloomy halls - not a great impression.
The fort has the shape of an equilateral triangle with a side length of about 60 meters, and the height of the walls is about 20 meters - solid structure. At the corners of the fortress there are powerful towers, about 15 meters in diameter.
Here's what the guide told us. In its current form, the Fortress of Porto Palermo has existed since the 18th century. At that time, Albania was under Ottoman rule and the fortress was actually ruled by Ali Pasha Tepelensky, the Ottoman governor.
Many guidebooks write that Ali Pasha Tepelenski himself built the fortifications for his wife Vasiliki. But, according to the guide, archeological excavations were carried out here and archeologists have established that the fortress was erected on the foundations of a Venetian castle, which was built a hundred years earlier - in the 17th century.
Ali Pasha Tepelenski was one of the most brutal tyrants in the Ottoman Empire. An interesting fact: his life story impressed Alexandre Dumas so much that he described the biography of this ruler in his work "Ali Pasha".
There is no inner courtyard in the fortress, it is covered with a stone vault, which forms a platform on top. Numerous columns support the vaults, and the fortress resembles a gloomy palace. Perhaps this is what the terrible dictator - Albanian Dracula - should have.
We climbed the stairs to the open bridgehead of the fortress. As I have already said, the fortress was built by Ali Pasha in honor of his wife Vasiliki. It also served as an observation post. All possible approaches to the fort are clearly visible from the upper platform.
For us, tourists, the picturesque view of the surrounding area is more important: the bay, the islands, and the nearby village. We found here some places for taking photos.
We return inside the fort. The cool rooms of the fortress now seem like a salvation... Here again we recall the horrific stories told by the guide about tortures and executions that Ali Pasha himself invented and watched with pleasure how his executioners carried them out and how the victims suffered.
The stories are so unpleasant that I don't want to retell them to you. And we listened to all these horrors with half an ear, waiting to emerge from the gloomy fortress premises into the white light. By the way, the tyrant himself was also beheaded, so, as they say: "A dog's death for a dog." Well, here we are in the fresh air, returning to the parking lot along the same path along the dam.
There is a nice sandy beach near the fort. This is where those who left their cars in the parking lot near the fortress settle. The view of the surrounding area and the beach are very nice. There are sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach. There is a minimum of civilization, but there is a lot of sun, air, and silence.
I was not particularly delighted with the Porto Palermo fortress. It seemed to me that these days the building is in disrepair and requires improvement of infrastructure: food outlets, parking, toilets - all this is missing here.
If it weren't for the transit from Saranda to our home, which passed by the Porto Polermo fortress, I would hardly have come here specifically for an excursion, but if you drive along the SH8 highway, you can easily turn off to the bay and visit the fortress.

Mums, turistams, svarbiau vaizdingas apylinkių vaizdas: įlanka, salos ir netoliese esantis kaimas. Čia radome keletą vietų, kuriose galima nusifotografuoti.

Porto Palermo tvirtovė manęs ne itin sužavėjo. Man atrodė, kad šiomis dienomis pastatas yra apleistas ir reikalauja infrastruktūros gerinimo: maitinimo įstaigos, automobilių stovėjimo aikštelė, tualetai - viso to čia trūksta.
Jei ne tranzitas iš Sarandos į mūsų namus, kuris ėjo pro Porto Polermo tvirtovę, vargu ar būčiau čia specialiai atvažiavęs ekskursijai, bet jei važiuosite SH8 greitkeliu, nesunkiai galėsite pasukti į įlanką ir aplankyti tvirtovę.
