Today I decided to go for my people and, although it is my daily life to walk through these streets, I took the path in search of the historical origin of my old town.My steps took me to the founding house of San Lorenzo de Aguacate, site on the Havana-Matanzas plain, a place that in past centuries was a seat for those merchants who were traveling with their cattle to Havana.Over time, the Royal Camino of the Island that departed from Santiago de Cuba and the farmers who came on foot with their cattle were chosen to rest the most favorable places, hence the old corral of the seven princes of the Aguacate was one of them.
San Lorenzo was the resting place after a long journey and soon received the nickname of avocado ( Aguacate) because these men took refuge from the intense sun under the shadow of a huge grove of this delicious fruit.The Arboleda witnessed meetings, business, merchandise exchanges, tricks and with the passage of time a small corral was founded, in whose center a farm was built.
One of its most emblematic relics of the primal era is "La Casona", a building dating from 1779, although the official records refer to the foundation as a town in 1796. This was the home heart of the hacienda, home of family and its slaves.This corral as stated in the National Archive was divided and one of its parts awarded on December 4, 1795, to Mrs. Braulio Gamillo de Alvenco.Years later, when marriage with Don José García de Bancos, they begin to work with a view to creating ingenuity, but not being agreed as a coffee site and potrero.The conditions of humid climate and the red clay soil promised a fertile agricultural development.This cafetal was composed of eighteen cavalries of the “El Aguacate” hacienda, owned to the Oratory of San Felipe de Nery.
Arriving is not complicated, it is located on one side of one of the main arteries of the town.
In the 21st century, it retains its original appearance despite the deterioration of the years.The balance of the windows, the horcones, the wood of the roof, the walls of stonework and mud continue to keep the dust of the story.The current inhabitants barely modified a small part to try to keep it.
To my surprise, between the vegetation I discovered that the stone structure that protected the first water well and its installation of pipes is still preserved, of course they date from a good time after the house was built.
It is really impressive to get to this place and perceive its wonderful energy.Obviously he needs an arduous restoration work, however, he has not had the luck of being considered within the immediate projections for the rescue of heritage sites.It is that the old and prosperous San Lorenzo de Aguacate no longer appears in the tourist exploitation panorama, something that seems nonsense, taking into account that at this lost point of geography places of interest as one of the first terminals are also built as one of the first terminals of a railroad, the ruins of two former sugar mills of the 19th century, the house where the chess genius José Raúl Capablanca and so many other attractions that evoke and magnify the story lived and lived until his youth.On these sites I promise to return other times.

Hoy decidí salir a caminar por mi pueblo y, aunque es mi cotidianidad caminar por estas calles, tomé el sendero en busca del origen histórico de mi viejo pueblo. Mis pasos me llevaron hasta la casa fundacional de San Lorenzo de Aguacate, sitio en la llanura Habana-Matanzas, lugar que en siglos pasados fuera asiento para aquellos comerciantes que viajaban con su ganado con destino a La Habana. Con el transcurso del tiempo se llega a formar el Camino Real de la Isla que partía desde Santiago de Cuba y los ganaderos que venían a pie con sus reses escogían para descansar los lugares más favorables, de ahí que el antiguo Corral de los Siete Príncipes del Aguacate fuera uno de ellos.
Fue San Lorenzo el lugar de descanso luego de un largo trayecto y pronto recibió el sobrenombre de Aguacate pues estos hombres se refugiaban del intenso sol bajo la sombra de una enorme arboleda de este delicioso fruto. La arboleda fue testigo de reuniones, negocios, intercambios de mercancía, tretas y con el paso del tiempo se fundó una pequeño corral, en cuyo centro se levantó una hacienda.
Una de sus reliquias más emblemáticas de la época primigenia es “la Casona”, edificación que data de 1779, aunque las actas oficiales refieren la fundación como poblado en 1796. Este fue el hogar corazón de la hacienda, hogar de familia y sus esclavos. Este Corral según consta en el Archivo Nacional fue dividido y una de sus partes adjudicada el 4 de diciembre de 1795, a Doña Braulio Gamillo de Alvenco. Años más tarde, al contraer matrimonio con Don José García de Bancos, comienzan a trabajar con vista a crear un ingenio, pero al no convenirles quedó como sitio cafetal y potrero. Las condiciones de clima húmedo y el suelo arcilloso rojo prometían un fértil desarrollo agrícola. Este cafetal estaba compuesto por dieciocho caballerías de la hacienda “El Aguacate”, propiedad vendida al Oratorio de San Felipe de Nery.
Llegar no es complicado, se encuentra localizada a un lado de una de las principales arterias del pueblo.
En pleno siglo XXI, conserva su aspecto original a pesar del deterioro de los años. Los balaustres de los ventanales, los horcones, la madera de la techumbre, las paredes de cantería y barro siguen guardando el polvo de la historia. Los habitantes actuales apenas modificaron una pequeña parte para tratar de conservarla.
Para mi sorpresa, entre la vegetación descubrí que aún se conserva la estructura de piedra que protegió el primer pozo de agua y su instalación de tuberías, por supuesto estas datan de un buen tiempo después de que se construyera la casa.
Es realmente impresionante llegar hasta este lugar y percibir su energía maravillosa. Obviamente necesita de un arduo trabajo de restauración, sin embargo, no ha contado con la suerte de ser considerada dentro de las proyecciones inmediatas para el rescate de sitios patrimoniales. Es que el antiguo y próspero San Lorenzo de Aguacate ya no figura en el panorama de explotación turística, algo que me parece un disparate, teniendo en cuenta que en este punto perdido de la geografía también se levantan lugares de interés como una de las primeras terminales de ferrocarril, las ruinas de dos antiguos ingenios azucareros del XIX, la casa donde nació y vivió hasta su juventud el genio del ajedrez José Raúl Capablanca y tantos otros atractivos que evocan y magnifican la historia. Sobre estos sitios prometo volver en otras oportunidades.
Ahora les dejo las imágenes de mi visita, esperando que las puedan disfrutar junto a mí de esta verdadera reliquia. Espero haber captado un poco del espítitu mágico de “la Casona” con mi lente.
