There are buildings that just by seeing them make us think about how human beings were able to create such monuments. There are even theories that seek explanations in the presence of aliens to achieve them, as is the case with the pyramids of Egypt.
That feeling was what I felt when I visited the cathedral of the city of La Plata in Buenos Aires, a huge building that stands out from afar, and it seems that you traveled without a passport from Argentina to Barcelona, because of the similarity of the architecture of that Spanish city.
When you get to the foot of the building, you can feel a special vibe, even if you do not profess the Catholic religion, because you have to lean over, to get to see the structure in its entirety.
A series of statuettes on both sides are the “caretakers” of the entrances of this church. There are 12 in total, but now the 8 located at the main entrance are under maintenance.
This cathedral has after the threshold of the door, the signaling of an App with the audio guide to make the interior tour, which I preferred to do on my own, blindly discovering everything that had to surprise me. I don't know if it was a good or bad decision, but I didn't have headphones to do it without disturbing other visitors.
It also has two elevators to enjoy the views of the city, which we could not access because we arrived at the closing time of the elevators, nor could we enter the museum area located next to the cathedral. That was left as a pending task for another visit.
When you pass the second door, and actually enter the area where religious services are held, it is impossible to take your breath away. Three naves raised on Greek columns so wide that it would take three people to embrace them.
The oyster white color gives it a certain warmth that does not produce the tone of pure white, plus the multiple entries of natural light both through the glass of the upper part and that which comes through the colorful murals, makes the environment a spectacle in colors as you walk towards the altar.
The figures of the saints arranged along its aisles, were mostly carved in wood, although the virgins made of the known materials also stood out, some even with clothes made of cloth instead of being painted on the statue.
For the days I visited, the manger was still in one of the chapels located at the sides. While in the others you could see different figures, the most impressive being a replica of the deceased Christ before his ascension.
I was also curious to see a space dedicated to Carlo Acutis, a young Italian-British man who died in 2006 due to leukemia, and who was beatified by Pope Francis, for leaving a legacy of faith and dedication to Jesus Christ at a time when teenagers tend to show rebellion and very different behaviors, and whose body has not been corrupted to date, besides having already two miracles recognized by the Vatican.
Another relic that we can see in the cathedral of La Plata is the staff that was given to Pope Francis during his visit to Myanmar, a country forgotten by the rest of the planet, which faces not only internal wars but also hunger and misery.
Arriving at the altar, I see that there is a cordoned off area because it is also in the process of restructuring, but looking a little more, I see that it is the other part of the church, with another altar. In fact, I had not seen for years a religious precinct with a double altar, in which two masses can be said simultaneously with two priests, since the amplitude of the structure allows it.
Over the altar that was accessible, a dome with yellow crystals let the light pass through, generating such an intense illumination, as if it were the sun itself wanting to enter in all its expression.
It is really an enjoyable visit if you like architecture and the history of religious art, but also if you are curious to discover magical corners, such as this baptismal font closed to the public.
It's a walk that you can't miss, and at this point of the post, I think I'm thankful I couldn't go up the elevator or enter the museum, because I would have to write a best seller of this magical place.
Hay edificaciones que con solo verlas nos ponen a pensar sobre el cómo seres humanos fueron capaces de crear semejantes monumentos. Inclusive existen teorías que buscan explicaciones en la presencia de alienígenas para lograrlas, como sucede con las pirámides de Egipto.
Esa sensación fue lo que me produjo visitar la catedral de la ciudad de La Plata en Buenos Aires, un edificio enorme que se distingue desde lo lejos, y que pareciera que viajaste sin pasaporte desde Argentina hasta Barcelona, por la similitud de la arquitectura de esa ciudad española.
Al llegar al pie del edificio, se puede sentir una vibra especial, así no profeses la religión católica, pues toca inclinarse de más, para poder llegar a ver la estructura en su totalidad.
Una serie de estatuillas de lado y lado son las "cuidadoras" de las entradas de esta iglesia. Son 12 en total, pero ahora se encuentran en mantenimiento las 8 ubicadas en la entrada principal.
Esta catedral tiene luego del umbral de la puerta, la señalización de una App con la audioguía para hacer el recorrido interior, el cual yo preferí hacer por mi cuenta, descubriendo a ciegas todo lo que tenía para sorprenderme. La verdad no sé si fue una buena o mala decisión, pero igualmente no tenía auriculares como para hacerlo sin molestar a los demás visitantes.
Tiene también dos ascensores para poder disfrutar de las vistas de la ciudad, a los que no pudimos acceder por llegar a la hora del cierre de los mismos, así como tampoco pudimos entrar a la zona del museo ubicada a un costado de la catedral. Eso nos quedó como tarea pendiente en una nueva visita.
Cuando pasas la segunda puerta, y entras realmente al recinto donde se imparten los servicios religiosos, es imposible quedarse sin aliento. Tres naves levantadas sobre columnas griegas tan anchas que se necesitarían 3 personas para poderlas abrazar.
El color blanco ostra le da una cierta calidez que no produce el tono del blanco puro, además de las múltiples entradas de luz natural tanto por los cristales de la parte superior como la que viene a través de los coloridos murales, hace del ambiente un espectáculo en colores mientras caminas hacia el altar.
Las figuras de los santos dispuestas a lo largo de sus pasillos, eran en su mayoría talladas en madera, aunque también se destacaban las vírgenes hechas en los materiales conocidos, algunas inclusive con ropas hechas de tela en lugar de estar pintadas sobre la estatua.
Para los días que la visité, todavía se encontraba el pesebre en una de las capillas ubicadas a los costados. Mientras que en las otras se podían ver distintas figuras , siendo la más impresionante una réplica del cristo fallecido antes de su ascensión.
También me causó curiosidad ver un espacio dedicado a Carlo Acutis, un joven italo-británico fallecido en el 2006 a causa una de leucemia, y que fue beatificado por el Papa Francisco, por dejar un legado de fe y entrega a Jesuscristo en una época cuando los adolescentes tienden a mostrar rebeldía y comportamientos muy distintos, y cuyo cuerpo no se ha corrompido hasta la fecha actual, además de tener ya dos milagros reconocidos por el vaticano.
Otra reliquia que podemos ver en la catedral de La Plata es el báculo que le obsequiaron al Papa Francisco en su visita a Myanmar, un país olvidado por el resto del planeta, que enfrenta no solo guerras internas sino también hambre y miseria.
Llegando al altar, veo que hay una zona acordonada pues también está en proceso de reestructuración, pero mirando un poco más, veo que se trata de la otra parte de la iglesia, con otro altar inclusive. De hecho, tenía años sin ver un recinto religioso con doble altar, en los cuales se puede dar dos misas en simultáneo con dos sacerdotes, ya que la amplitud de la estructura lo permite.
Sobre el altar que estaba accesible, una cúpula con cristales amarillos dejaba pasar la luz, generando una iluminación tan intensa, como si se tratara del mismo sol queriendo entrar en toda su expresión.
Realmente es una visita que se disfruta si te gusta la arquitectura y la historia del arte religioso, aunque también si eres de los que sienten curiosidad por descubrir rincones mágicos, como esta pila de bautismo cerrada al público.
Es un paseo que no tiene pérdida, y a estas alturas del post, creo que agradezco no poder haber subido al ascensor ni entrado en el museo, pues tendría que escribir un best seller de este mágico lugar.

I guess I have seen this building somewhere before, but I didn't remember it was in Buenos Aires and its name. From outside it is amazing, even inside it's really nice, powerful and elegant, and full of interesting stories. I felt really sad for Carlo Acutis, I didn't know about this story 😢
