Discovering History: A Visit to the Heritage of Cebu Monument

Edited using Canva.

Hello dear hivers, I am @marfeatures, and I am back with a new blog. How are you? I hope you are all doing well. For today's "blogserye" (blog series), I will be featuring a place rich in culture and history. Come and join me in exploring the wonders of Cebu's lifetime treasure, the Parian Monument.

Have you heard about the Parian Sculpture and Monument in Cebu? If not yet, brace yourselves as I bring you back in time. Let's dive into the rich cultural heritage of Cebu only at the famous and historical Parian in Cebu City. You can also visit nearby museums, just a walking distance from the site, like the Jesuits House, Casa Gorordo, Fort San Pedro, or the Malacañang sa Sugbo/National Museum in Cebu. Maybe soon I can give you a tour of those places, but for now let's have our focus on the Parian Monument.

History

Just a quick trivia question: Did you know that Parian got its name from the Spanish word "parian," which means "Chinese Quarter" or a settlement for Chinese people? Now you know! During the Spanish occupation, the Spaniards implemented separation policies to maintain control of the people, and here in Cebu the Parian District was the designated settlement for the Chinese merchants and traders.

Going back, the Parian Monument serves as a landmark and a symbol for the rich culture and history of Cebu. It was designed by a Filipino sculptor, Eduardo Castrillo, and architects Heradio Español and Ildefonso Santos. It was made of combined concrete, brass, steel, and bronze sculptures, which made it withstand time.

The monument depicted the "Battle of Mactan" and the "Arrival of Spanish Conquistadors" in Cebu, marking the beginning of "Christianization" in the Philippines. Notable "historical figures" are also present in the monument, such as "Sergio Osmeña Sr." and "Pedro Calungsod." Moreover, the best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon so that you will not directly be exposed to sunlight and can enjoy the view.

How to get there?

From the North Bus Terminal, ride a motorcycle or a taxi and let the driver know your destination. Ask the driver to bring you to the Parian Monument; they already know that place, and you just have to give Php 100 to motorcycles or much higher for a taxi. If you want a less costly commute, you should try to have a jeep with a Colon or Jones signboard. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Parian or Colon Street intersection. Afterwards, walk north to Magallanes Street and turn left; the Parian Monument is on your right.

Overall the monument reminds us of our history and the undying contribution of Cebuanos to the attainment of Philippine independence. Indeed, this landmark is a reminder of our past, that we Filipinos are resilient and never accept colonizers. As an ordinary Filipino, I stand proud seeing this landmark. Truly, history has so much to tell, and it's for us to discover and read about it. Together let us spread this bold history of ours to our young and let them know the sacrifices and significant contributions of the early Filipinos in our country.

That's all for now, Hivers. I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog. Help me reach a bigger audience by upvoting, commenting, and reblogging. Have a great day ahead, everyone. See you in my next blog. Bye bye! 👋💗✨
