Welcome to Negros Occidental! Today, I will take you on a more detailed virtual tour of one of the most famous attractions in the province, The Ruins. Located in Talisay City, this place is not just a sight to see but also a journey through history. This was part of my journey in 2023, and it remains one of my most cherished moments.
At Toledo Port, we hopped onto a ferry bound for San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. As the boat set off, the sea breeze welcomed us with open arms. The water sparkled like it knew it was part of our Instagram stories, and distant islands played peek-a-boo on the horizon. The hour-and-a-half ferry ride was smooth and surprisingly refreshing. We couldn't resist snapping photos of the shimmering waves and sharing snacks as the gentle rocking of the boat set the perfect mood. Upon docking at San Carlos City, it was back on the road for the final leg of our journey to Talisay City.
The entrance to The Ruins is like stepping into a time capsule. The sprawling garden and the towering skeleton of the mansion welcome you with grandeur. This Italianate mansion, constructed in the early 1900s by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, is steeped in history. Don Mariano built in memory of his wife, Maria Braga, who tragically passed away. Their love story breathes life into every detail of the structure, making it not only an architectural marvel but also a deeply emotional landmark.
The mansion's skeletal remains are stunning. The structure's walls are made of poured concrete, mixed with egg whites to make them more durable. This is why the walls have a smooth finish and have withstood the test of time. Despite being burned down during World War II to prevent Japanese forces from using it as a headquarters, the frame of the house still stands strong.
The arches and columns are particularly striking. Each curve and line speaks of meticulous craftsmanship. If you observe closely, you'll see the intricate patterns etched into the structure, giving a glimpse of the elegance it once radiated. The mansion's layout suggests the luxurious lifestyle of its original inhabitants, with wide hallways, spacious rooms, and large windows that allow natural light to flood in.
The Ruins is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. Its open arches and tall columns create a dramatic frames, making every angle picture-perfect. The natural light streaming through the windows enhances the beauty of the structure. If you visit during sunset, the mansion is bathed in a warm, golden glow, adding an almost magical touch to your photos.
Beyond the mansion, the gardens are a refreshing splash of green. Vibrant flowers, neatly trimmed hedges, and tall trees make you feel like you've stepped into a fairy tale. We wandered through the paths, soaking in the calming atmosphere and enjoying the occasional breeze that carried the sweet scent of blooms. At the center of the garden is a fountain, its gentle water flow adding a soothing touch to the experience.
For a little fun, there's a mini-golf area perfect for unleashing your competitive side. Whether you're aiming for a hole-in-one or just trying not to miss entirely, it's a way to enjoy the day.
If you're an early riser, you're in for a treat. The Ruins bask in golden morning glow as the sun climbs the sky. The light dances on the walls, highlighting every intricate detail of the architecture. It's a peaceful and magical way to start your visit, perfect photos and quiet reflection.
The Ruins is not just a place to visit; it's a place to feel. It's an opportunity to marvel at an architectural masterpiece, learn about a love story that defied time, and reflect on the resilience of the human spirit. Whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates beauty, The Ruins has something to offer.
The Ruins is open daily, and each time of day offers a unique experience. Mornings are ideal for appreciating the mansion's architecture in crisp daylight. Afternoons are perfect for exploring the garden and enjoying the warm hues of the golden hour. Evenings transform The Ruins into a romantic haven, with lights illuminating the structure against the dark sky. Whenever you choose to visit, the experience will leave a lasting impression.
My visit to The Ruins in 2023 was more than just a trip; it was an unforgettable experience. Standing amidst the skeletal structure, surrounded by the serene garden, I felt a profound connection to the stories of the past. The beauty of the place, combined with its rich history, left me in awe. I captured countless photos, each one a reminder of the wonder I felt during my time here. It's a place I would gladly return to, and one I encourage everyone to see.
