Hello everybody!/
I love the weekends, it's the time when we can travel
and walk in nature, visit some attractions and learn something new about the history of our country.
Asenovgrad city has always been special for me, not only because my mother is from this region, but also because I spent
the best years of my childhood in a village near the city.
As Asenovgrad is close to the town where I lived and grew up,
I have visited the town very often over the years. It has been a favorite destination for a walk because of one attraction,
which I will tell you about today.
Assen's Fortress/
Just 2km away from Asenovgrad, at the beginning of the road Asenovgrad - Smolyan, there as if perched on the slope above the river Asenitsa is the fortress.
Asenova Fortress is the ruins of a medieval fortress, and St. Mary of Petrich Church is the best preserved part.
Archaeological excavations indicate that the area was inhabited by the ancient Thracians as early as the 5th-4th centuries BC.
They were followed by the Romans and later by the Byzantine and Bulgarian kings.
In 1231 Tsar Ivan Asen II made a number of repairs and enlargements to the fortress to strengthen it and for this reason it was called Asen's Fortress,
and the town at the foot was renamed from Stanimaka to Asenovgrad.

More information about the fortress you can read HERE
The fortress is open to visitors. It is secured and has railings and stairs built in hard-to-reach places. Wooden models of medieval war machines can be seen. And now take a virtual tour with the photos I took. 😊
the Church "St. Mary of Petrich"
The first floor of the church was probably adapted for a storehouse or ossuary, but as no bones have been found, it is assumed to have been more of a storehouse.
On the second is the actual church, in which we distinguish frescoes from the 13th century. It was one of the first Eastern Orthodox churches,
to which a tower was built, serving both as a belfry and a watchtower.
