Hello traveling friends of this beautiful Worldmappin community. Today I want to show you a work of great architectural value that I find while walking along the central promenade of the beautiful Fifth Avenue of Miramar in Havana. It is a beautiful work that attracts a lot of attention for its majestic appearance and great height that can be seen from afar, becoming a symbol of the Playa municipality. It is the famous Fifth Avenue Bell Tower Clock that is located between 10th and 12th streets.

The first thing that catches your eye is its robustness and its height that reaches 22 meters. It has a clock on each side of the tower at the top and also has a bell tower made up of 4 bells, each one under each clock. Its roof is covered with very showy red tiles. The balconies in the bell tower itself add to the beauty of the entire architectural complex.

2.jpg

The tower is protected by a perimeter wall with an entrance on the sides of the central promenade, so that when we are walking we have to access that area by climbing three steps and bordering the tower. Here we can sit down to admire and listen to this fabulous work of engineering.

3.jpg

It is a colonial-style work inaugurated on this avenue in 1924, when the Miramar neighborhood was being born. It was designed by the American architect George Duncan and executed by the Cuban architect Eduardo Tella. The machinery was designed by E. Howard & Co of Boston and is a replica of London's Big Ben where the time is combined with the music of the chimes.

This jewel of architecture is the only one of its kind in Cuba, the clock marks the time and at the same time is synchronized with the bell tower to ring chimes every 15, 30 and 60 minutes and every nine hours.

Another interesting fact is that the watch continues to work as it is originally because it has to be wound every 72 hours, they have not wanted to automate the system to keep it exactly as it was designed.

On the ground floor of the tower there is a lady who is the one who guards the place, she very kindly answered the curious questions I asked her.

I asked her for permission to enter and climb the bell tower, but it could not be because it is forbidden due to security issues. He also told me that they were painting the inside and outside of the tower, we can see how one of the sides of the tower is already painted with a very light yellow color.

I was lucky enough to hear the bells when the clock struck 12 m, its four clocks tell the exact time despite its 100 years of existence.

It was really exciting to hear the chimes and we must thank the restoration process that was carried out in 2011 by the Cuban watchmaker Daniel Margolles, who with a lot of love and dedication repaired each piece to get it back to its splendor, since then he is the one who winds the clocks and is proud to see it work every day.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know our Cuban Big Ben.

I wish you a happy new year where health and prosperity prevail.

See you soon!
