Bangkok is a strange place for tourists. There are no real 'signature' attractions unlike places like London or Paris. It's just the sum of its parts. I'd suspect most western visitors get the most from the atmosphere and culture and the facts it's so different from what we know.
I know what you mean. Everyone I know that has been has went on about the general difference but true Ido not recall people talking about the equivalent of the Taj Mahal, just lots of general things.
You must be well used to it all now. You staying there for keeps?
