Two weekends ago, I went to visit a friend who lives in a city called Mar de Espanha, a rather peculiar name since the city has no sea and does not belong to Spain, but it is located in Brazil.. However, later on, I discovered that the name originated from an expression said by a Spaniard who, upon seeing the river that flows through the city full at that time, exclaimed in astonishment. Imagine expressing surprise and that turning into the name of a city! This makes the story even more intriguing, yet still an interesting part of the place’s identity.
This city has several churches, and that was what caught my attention the most during my visit, despite being a small municipality, with probably fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, driven by the textile industry of intimate apparel and rural activities. It is a calm place, seemingly perfect for those seeking the tranquility that only small towns offer, in addition to having very welcoming and friendly people.
My first stop, as soon as I arrived from my trip, which lasted approximately two hours, was at the main church, located right in the city center, facing the square. It is a very beautiful church, with architecture quite typical of towns in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais.

Há dois fins de semana, fui visitar um amigo que mora em uma cidade chamada Mar de Espanha, um nome um tanto peculiar, visto que a cidade não possui mar e não pertence à Espanha. Porém, mais tarde, descobri que o nome surgiu devido a uma expressão dita por um espanhol que, ao ver o rio que passa pela cidade bem cheio naquela época, exclamou com espanto. Imagine expressar uma surpresa e isso se tornar o nome de uma cidade! Isso torna a história ainda mais curiosa, mas, ainda assim, uma parte interessante da identidade do lugar.
Essa cidade possui algumas igrejas, e foi isso que mais me chamou a atenção durante a visita, mesmo sendo um município pequeno, com provavelmente menos de 20 mil habitantes, movimentado pela indústria têxtil de peças íntimas e pelas atividades rurais. É um lugar calmo, que parece perfeito para aqueles que buscam a tranquilidade que apenas cidades pequenas oferecem, além de contar com pessoas muito receptivas e amigáveis.
Minha primeira parada, assim que cheguei de viagem, que durou aproximadamente duas horas , foi na igreja principal, localizada bem no centro da cidade, de frente para a praça. É uma igreja muito bonita, com uma arquitetura bastante típica das cidades do interior do estado de Minas Gerais.

The church's simple exterior contrasts with its interior, which surprised me with its beauty. With the doors open to the public and no one around to provide information or watch over the place, I entered with my friend and took some photos. I really liked everything I saw there, a very beautiful church that likely attracts the city's Catholics on Sunday mornings, as well as visitors from various places.
A simplicidade exterior da igreja contrasta com seu interior, que me surpreendeu com sua beleza. Com as portas abertas ao público e sem ninguém por ali para dar informações ou vigiar o local, entrei com meu amigo e tirei algumas fotos. Gostei muito de tudo que vi ali—uma igreja muito bonita, que provavelmente atrai os católicos da cidade aos domingos de manhã, além de visitantes de diversos lugares.
After visiting this part of the city, it was time to unpack, take a shower, and rest a bit at my friend's house, who welcomed me. I loved this central area, a very cozy place, and I felt like staying there for a few more hours, but I still wanted to visit other churches in the city.
Depois de visitar essa parte da cidade, era hora de desfazer as malas, tomar um banho e descansar um pouco na casa do meu amigo, que me recebeu. Adorei essa região central, um lugar bem aconchegante, e fiquei com vontade de permanecer ali por mais algumas horas, mas ainda queria visitar outras igrejas da cidade.
At this part of my trip, I went to visit another church, which has a very interesting history and contrasts a bit with our current reality. My friend, who was acting as my tour guide, told me that the church we had just visited had always been the main church in the city, but at that time, enslaved people were not allowed to attend it. So, after the abolition of slavery in Brazil, they built their own church.
Nessa parte da minha viagem, fui visitar outra igreja, que possui uma história bem interessante e contrasta um pouco com nossa realidade atual. Meu amigo, que estava fazendo o papel de guia turístico para mim, disse que a igreja que acabamos de visitar sempre foi a principal da cidade, mas, naquela época, os escravos não podiam frequentá-la. Então, após a abolição da escravatura no Brasil, eles construíram sua própria igreja.

This church is located on one of the highest hills in the city, a place that requires some physical preparation, and the intense heat didn’t help much. But I can say that, even though the church was closed, every effort was worth it. Besides its history, it offers a beautiful viewpoint of the city.
Of course, I took off my drone and took some more photos from there.
Essa igreja fica em um dos montes mais altos da cidade, um lugar que exige um pouco de preparo físico, e o calor intenso não ajudou muito. Mas posso dizer que, mesmo a igreja estando fechada, valeu a pena cada esforço. Além da sua história, é um belo mirante da cidade.
Claro que decolei meu drone e tirei mais algumas fotos dali.
There are other churches spread throughout the city, and although I was interested in learning the history of each one, it was just a quick visit.
Bem outras igrejas espalhas pela cidade e apesar de ter interesse em saber das histórias de cada uma delas, foi apenas um visita rápida.
Besides absorbing a bit of the local culture, it was amazing to reunite with my friend, whom I consider a brother. A weekend that left me with nostalgia and was very enjoyable. I love small towns and the stories they tell in their simplicity, I love the reception people give when someone from outside arrives, and the peace found there is something precious. It was an incredible trip!
Além de absorver um pouco da cultura do local, foi incrível poder rever meu amigo, que considero como um irmão. Um fim de semana que deixou saudades e que foi muito prazeroso. Eu amo cidades pequenas e a história que elas contam em sua simplicidade, amo a recepção das pessoas quando alguém de fora chega no local, e a paz que se encontra ali é algo precioso. Foi uma viagem incrível!
