On a clear and sunny winter day, the imposing Bled Castle and the charming Bled Island were, like Narcissus, admiring their reflection in the lake. For me it was a perfect occasion to take some photos and immortalise the beautiful scenery of Lake Bled.
What to say about Bled? Bled is one of the most iconic and well know images of Slovenia. The glacial lake lies nestled in the Julian Alps. Imposing mountains peaks are completing the fairy-tale image of the location.
Right in Bled, you will find the only Slovenian island, in fact the only island is in the middle of the lake (and not in the sea, as you would probably imagine).
You can reach the island with a ride on ˝pletna˝ boat – a traditional, wooden boat that is conducted by a person called ˝pletnar˝ who rows in a specific way.
But you can also rent your own boat and row to the island.
In very cold winters (not like this year) the lake freezes and the bravest can reach the island on food 😊 Many people also like to ice skate on the frozen lake, but I’m a little bit scared and not feel comfortable walk on the ice...it can crack anytime 😮…
Well, whatever you will choose, it is worth to visit the island and to take the 100 stairs to reach the small church and ring on the Wish bell!
The second land mark of Bled is the Bled castle, perched on a high cliff above lake Bled. The imposing castle encloses a museum, a smaller castle wine cellar and an excellent restaurant. But what is the most breath-taking is defiantly the view on the lake and surroundings.
This time we’ve skipped the visit of the castle and we did the walk around the lake. It is a very nice, 6 kilometres long promenade, that goes all around the lake. If you will be in Bled take your time and walk around the lake, it is really relaxing!
In the clear lake water, you will notice many fishes and ducks, but ˝the mascot˝ of the lake are the white swans. We met just one, but luckily, he was in the right mood to make some professional posing 😊.
The visit of Lake Bled is not complete without a tasty and delicious Bled cream cake. The tradition of Bled cream cake started in 1953, with its crispy dough, delicious vanilla cream and topped with whipped cream, it is definitely one of the tastiest Slovenian desserts 🍰.
With this post I’ve present just few of the activities and characteristics of lake Bled, but there is much more to discover 😊. I hope I’ve inspired you to put Bled on your travel list.
