Newton Abbot's Nature and Town (Photo Essay)

I'd check the weather forecast that promised nothing but misery, so I prepared mentally from the night before and gathered everything I needed to beat the grimness.

So, in my warm trekking shoes, I pottered through Milber Woods to the Market town, Newton Abbot.
I encountered a few dog walkers whose dogs seemed way happier than them, but it was understandable because it rained all day with heavy winds.

Still, I was determined to see the beauty in everything, and it was a casual observatory walk, while I skillfully snapped shots without ruining my mobile.

Here, for example, isn't the tree bark old, yet full of character, shapes and designs that were worth capturing?
PSX_20230803_132353.jpg

The smell of rain and the wet wood gave me a certain kind of earthly feel, that kept telling me to go on.

PSX_20230803_132519.jpg

Which I did, happily:)

The streets were chuck-a-block, and when I looked at the drivers, they didn't seem to be having that much fun with raindrops on their windscreens, as it was for me listening to the raindrops beating on my umbrella.

It was grey just as you see, so I take a hat off to runners who are enthusiastic about running in the cold rain.

PSX_20230803_134336.jpg

It takes a special kind of determination, dedication, and desire to remain active regardless of the weather conditions.
I was inspired, even more by the positive affirmations of the street art through the under paths.

These tunnels have recently been coloured with love, by a project of local artists, and the local council called "Tunnel of Love".

There are never too much positive affirmations, especially if we believe them and put them into practice, don't you think?

... and I particularly liked the message of this sign on the bus stop, more than the products it's advertising though.

"Love what you love"

This is where I tend to shop because it's within walking distance, affordable and stocks everything that I need at a better price than the other supermarkets in town.

PSX_20230803_134506.jpg

I felt as happy as these two little birds were, as I saw this classic Citroen approaching. I love vintage cars, so at this stage a dropped my umbrella and snapped these while the driver was laughing his head off in the traffic.

PSX_20230803_144828.jpg

I don't know whether he found my excitement at seeing the car funny or if it was my hair curling up like a poodle as it got drenched in the rain, but he smiled and waved.

... Public toilets

I hate walking through a town where there's no public toilet or even a fast food outlet that I can pop into. I think that's poor planning.
PSX_20230803_143621.jpg

The good thing about this one is that it's frequently cleaned and amenities are replenished throughout the day.

IMG_20230802_143323_097.jpg
Whenever I see red mailboxes, I know where in the world I am:)

And I quickly crossed over to this nearby park.

The day was finally starting to brighten up as I got to this stretch of town, but only momentarily.

PSX_20230803_135021.jpg

Many old churches throughout the town have been converted and used as offices or museums
PSX_20230803_135203.jpg

I liked the look of this photo, where you can see the side streets, so I added it as well.

PSX_20230803_135320.jpg

These are right along the main street, Queen's Road, where there are many small independently owned shops.
PSX_20230803_135514.jpg
I'm never too comfortable walking under scaffolding, but today I made the exception to avoid crossing the street again, and as you've guessed, "I'm still standing."

Here's the exterior of the many Charity Shops in the town. These shops are like little boutique shops that are nicely decorated with items displayed tastefully.

PSX_20230803_135653.jpg

Clothes are changed seasonally just like high street shops do, hence the bright floral patterns here.

Can you guess what this stunning building is?

Newton Abbot is an old market town, so, of course, there's a market, and Wednesday is the weekly market day, however yesterday it was scanty with just a flower vendor outside

IMG_20230802_152213_785.jpg

IMG_20230802_152217_686.jpg

... and I circled the exterior of the market

Of all things, I fancied an ice cream, so I had one from this little coffee corner.

There's a cinema as well. I haven't been to the movie in ages, and have not been inside this one as yet.
IMG_20230802_153101_155.jpg

I think this was the longest walk I've ever taken in the rain, but I was in the mood to be outdoors, which lifted my mood.

IMG_20230802_155632_324.jpg

I wandered around to the clock tower, and then made my way back home, on the same route that I took walking in.

IMG_20230802_155727_825.jpg

IMG_20230802_144659_116.jpg

On these wet roads, I dreaded the uphill walk through the woods, but I made it home before dark and guzzled down a few litres of water before retreating to a lovely meal with a glass of wine.

I then lit this lime, basil, and mandarin candle which scented my room nicely, listened to some of my favourite music and reflected on just how uplifting it was being in nature despite the drab weather.
I then called it a night 💋

All images were taken by me on a rainy day Wednesday 2 August 2023, with my Motorola mobile.

Hello dear friend @millycf1976 how are you
the scent of rain in nature is really energizing and beautiful
I loved all those street art works, beautiful and colorful
the citroen is very special, time that I did not see one of them
I loved this photo essay, you have beautiful shots
I appreciate that you have shared this photographic experience

Thank you so much @jlufer.
It was the little things that brighten the grey, wet day. I'm happy that I went out and it was a great day exploring different areas of the town where I had never been.
Thanks for stopping by, and I'm happy that you enjoyed this.
Have a lovely day or night:)))

It's impressive when people have the dedication to run in bad weather.

That wild flower bed garden is really cool. Pretty too.

Very cool cinema. Nice old building

I love to exercise, but not in the UK's miserable weather 😂

Yeah, the flower bed is awesome. The rain came chucking then and I had t run for shelter, but they have about 3 flower beds like that one next to each other.

Yeah, there are some more cool buildings that I'll explore more of in good weather:)))

Interesting place, with refreshing nature, amazing street artwork, and unique structures (especially the churches). Roaming around for sure is wonderful. Thank you for sharing @millycf1976.

Thanks for your lovely comment. Yes, there's quite a variety. The weather continues to be horrible though, so I'm stuck indoors today.
Have a lovely weekend:)))

Oh, that was sad, Be careful guys and stay dry.,

🤗 Thanks:)

What a walk! And so many different impressions. I heard of churches getting new purpose, but here we have none of them by now.

I take with me:
Be silly
Be honest
Bei Kind
...
Relax
...
Follow your passion

Footstep for footstep
Never mind the weather
❤️

Yes, I think the majority of churches in this town are repurposed. Even the main museum is at an old church building in the town.
I like your take away, those were some valuable affirmations ❤️

I went inside that library the other time I was in town. They have a massive section dedicated to railway books, apparently it's the second largest of its kind in UK!!

Ok, that's right up my alley!
I'm gonna try and pop in there at least twice per week:)

Wowww... I loved that walk in the rain 😍😍😍

Everything is impressive, I loved that tour around your town, it's beautiful, especially the crossing of the forest😻😻😻

It is simply worth walking in the rain and outdoors, it edifies the soul and comforts the spirit 🥰🥰🥰

A big hug and big kiss from a distance but not into oblivion 😘😘😘

Thank you 😊

Walking in the rain and outdoors, edifies the soul and comforts the spirit

You've said that so well 🤗

Thanks for stopping by, and I'm happy that you appreciated this:)))

Hahaha... Thanks to you, for sharing such a beautiful experience 🥰🥰🥰

Cordial greetings in the distance but not forgotten 😘😘😘

Thanks for your lovely comment.😊
Have a great weekend 😘

I thought you'll be going for a hike, but the place is actually a town...hehe.. From woods to town, from grey sky to blue...
You had a lovely walk there ☺️

Thank you 😊

Hehe! Yeah, the footpath is through the woods. Otherwise, I can go through the back streets but it's extremely hilly, and I do that only when I'm going a different route with my husband to a nearby pub.
Yes, it was a great walk despite the continuous rain 😊😍

My brother had a citreon like that, same colour as well. Citreon owners used to wave to each other. 🙂

Hehe! I like when unique car owners do that 😁
I think those cars are lovely:)))

The only problem is, if you change your car to something else, you accidently keep waving to other people when you haven't got a citreon. 😆

🤣😂😆 I can see that happening.
In Jamaica, I had a silver 1995 Honda Prelude with a sunroof. There was another one just like it, and we normally flashed each other when we drove by. I saw one in Newton Abbot a couple of weeks ago and caught myself just as I was about to wave to the driver. 🤣😂

I think it's sweet if you wave to the right car ... a bit weird if you dont. 😃

🤣💯%

Wow! 🤩
Thanks for sharing with us.
The place looks amazing and the pictures too, very colorful.
It’s very good to take time off sometimes and just relax and have fun like you did.
Amazing pictures.

Thank you so much!
I'm happy that you enjoyed my walk through my photos 😊
