This mosque is a silent witness to the death of General Kohler
In 1873 the Kingdom of the Netherlands declared war on the Kingdom of Aceh, cannon shots from the sea were fired into the plains of Aceh. A month later the Dutch managed to land in Aceh and took control of this mosque, General Kohler brought more than three thousand troops. Ten days later war raged in various places in Aceh, the biggest one was the war in this mosque. The Aceh Task Force tried to reclaim this mosque which was controlled by the Dutch. In the battle to seize this mosque, General Kohler was killed, so the Dutch had to withdraw, this was the first phase of the Aceh war against the Dutch. Therefore this mosque is very famous, a symbol of resistance to the Dutch, has deep-rooted historical and cultural values. It's not complete if you come to Aceh if you don't stop at this mosque. If someone goes to Aceh but does not visit this mosque, then he is considered to have never been to Aceh.
Apart from being a place of worship, this mosque is a symbol of the city of Banda Aceh, as well as a tourist attraction, local and foreign tourists often visit this mosque. This mosque was once burned down during the war with the Dutch, but was later rebuilt. This mosque was the silent witness to the death of General Kohler. The Dutch war against Aceh was the most bitter war and cost both sides, so many lives and property were destroyed because of the war that lasted decades. Nowadays most people visit this mosque with their families, pray, then afterwards just take pictures or chat in the courtyard of the mosque. At least local tourists visit this mosque so they don't forget the dark history of the past, apart from traveling;
