I don't think the UK is much 'stronger' than Italy these days. People's everyday quality of life, I suspect, is quite a stretch worse in the UK on average. We of course lost our colonies as a result of the world wars (making us the real losers, if you think about it), and have been declining ever since!
Also, Rome never conquered Britain - They never managed to get Scotland or any Ireland!
