There are many advantages to taking a long road trip. One of them is getting to know places on the way to your destination without the need to plan.
This is how we arrived in Mérida, the incredible Roman city of Extremadura, which, if you want to explore it, requires much more time and light than we had available for our brief visit.
However, when you have both an adventurous spirit and a lot of curiosity, there is no problem with taking a first approach to consider a possible way back.
Merida presents itself after dark as an intriguing city, not only because of the mysterious aspect of its countless Roman remains but also because it is impossible to enjoy any of its main attractions without natural lighting.
The magnificent Roman amphitheater, for example, remains completely dark, without any artificial lighting, and fenced, thus preventing the curious eyes of those who walk around at night, can seeing even the slightest glimpse of the ancient remains.
Despite this, I have to admit that the active life of the city at night and the rest of the Roman elements in every corner of it, surprised me a lot because I wasn't expecting any of these and made me forget, quickly, the disappointment of not having planned a more appropriate itinerary for our time in the city.
It's a very curious city, quite touristy it can't be denied, but it awakens the archaeological interest of everyone who comes visiting , because everywhere you look, some ancient walls and roads coexist with the most modern constructions. Several buildings reserve their ground floor to show views of the remains of the oldest constructions that lie beneath the modern city.
It is also a city graced with many orange trees, many of its streets have these plants throughout its length, so it is impossible for someone who is not accustomed to their presence, to stop to curiously look a little of these plants. And well, if you are as curious as I am, you can find out that they are not the oranges of usual consumption, but ornamental because their taste is unbearably bitter. Hahaha of course I had intended to give it a shot.
Another curiosity was to come across an unknown way of calling firewood, I don't know if this is something national that has escaped me until now, but this is the first time I read that ardemucho is a name to refer to wood for fireplaces, I thought it was something worth mentioning.
Hacer un largo viaje por carretera tiene muchas ventajas. Una de ellas es aprovechar las paradas necesarias, para conocer lugares que se encuentren de camino al destino previsto, sin necesidad de planificar mucho.
Así fue que llegamos a Mérida, la increíble ciudad romana de Extremadura para la que, si en realidad quieres conocerla, se necesita mucho mas tiempo e iluminación de la que nosotros disponíamos en nuestra breve visita.
Sin embargo, cuando se cuenta al mismo tiempo con un espíritu aventurero y mucha curiosidad, no existe problema alguno en tener un primer contacto para considerar un posible regreso.
Merida se presenta tras el anochecer como una ciudad intrigante, no solo por el aspecto misterioso de sus incontables restos romanos, sino también porque es imposible disfrutar de alguno de sus principales atractivos sin iluminación natural.
El magnifico anfiteatro romano, por ejemplo, se queda totalmente a oscuras, sin ningún tipo de iluminación artificial y totalmente vallado, evitando así que la curiosa mirada de los que paseamos por allí de noche, pueda vislumbrar siquiera el mínimo perfil de los restos milenarios.
A pesar de esto, tengo que admitir que el activo ritmo de la ciudad en la noche y el resto de elementos romanos en todos los rincones de ella, me sorprendieron mucho, pues no me esperaba ninguno de estos e hizo que se me olvidara, rápidamente, la decepción de no haber previsto un itinerario más adecuado para nuestro paso por la ciudad.
Es un lugar muy curioso, bastante turístico no se puede negar, pero que despierta el interés arqueológico de todo el que la visita, pues por donde quiera que mires, ves murallas y caminos antiguos que conviven con las construcciones mas modernas. Varias edificaciones reservan su planta baja para mostrar las vistas a los restos de las construcciones más antiguas que se encuentran debajo de toda la ciudad moderna.
También es una ciudad adornada con muchísimos naranjos, muchas de sus calles tienes estas plantas en toda su extensión, por lo que resulta imposible, para alguien que no está acostumbrado a su presencia, detenerse a curiosear un poco estas plantas. Y bueno si son tan curiosos como yo, podrán comprobar que no son las naranjas de consumo habitual, sino ornamentales, pues su sabor es de un amargo insoportable. Jajaja claro que iba a intentar probarlas.
Otra curiosidad fue encontrarme con una desconocida forma de llamar a la leña, no sé si esto sea algo nacional que se me haya escapado hasta ahora, pero es primera vez que leo que ardemucho es un nombre para referirse a la madera para chimeneas, me pareció algo digno de registrar.

Pórtico del Foro Municipal de Augusta Emérita
Just walking around the historic center it is very easy to come across large and well-preserved architectural elements from Roman times.
The Portico del Foro Municipal was the first complex of ruins I came across after the disappointment of not being able to see the Roman amphitheater and I thought it was a good trade-off, of course, that I had no idea what to expect from the city because I hadn't prepared myself to visit it, only remembering a few things from some documentary I saw a long time ago.
These spaces, which are located between commercial and residential buildings in the heart of the city, are very well lit and many of their details can be admired despite visiting them at night.
Simplemente caminando por el casco histórico es muy fácil encontrarse con grandes y bien preservados elementos arquitectónicos de épocas romanas.
El Pórtico del Foro Municipal fue el primer complejo de ruinas con el que me tope luego de la decepción de no poder ver el anfiteatro romano y me pareció que era una buena compensación, por supuesto, es que yo no tenía mucha idea de qué cosas esperar de la ciudad porque no me había preparado para visitarla, solo recordaba pocas cosas de algún documental visto hace mucho tiempo.
Estos espacios, que se encuentran entre edificios comerciales y viviendas en pleno centro de la ciudad, sí que están muy bien iluminados y pueden admirarse muchos de sus detalles a pesar de visitarlos durante la noche.

Templo de Diana
This temple is one of the most visited monuments and was not only well lit at night, but also had a set of colorful lights that created a more mystical atmosphere and also began to guide you towards the path to the Roman bridge which was illuminated in a similar way.
This space is much larger than the previous one and allows you to get a more realistic idea of how grandiose the city must have been, as well as the magnitude of the constructions that were made at the time.
Este templo es uno de los monumentos más visitados y no solo estaba bien iluminado por la noche, sino que también disponía de un juego de luces coloridas que creaban una atmósfera más mística y también comenzaban a guiarte hacía el camino al puente romano que estaba iluminado de una forma similar.
Este espacio es mucho más grande que el anterior y te permite hacerte una idea más real de lo grandiosa que tuvo que ser la ciudad, además de la magnitud de las construcciones que se hicieron en su momento.

Parque de las méridas del mundo
On our way to the famous Roman bridge that we were recommended not to miss at night, we found ourselves in front of the park of *The Meridas of the world", paying homage to the sister cities of this one that are in the rest of the globe, some of them are the cities of the same name that are in Venezuela and Mexico.
On this occasion the small park, which has the Alacazarejo building in the background, was illuminated with purple lights, which I loved, along with a structure of lights with the name of the city, very attractive for everyone who passed by, who stopped to take their respective selfie.
De camino al famoso puente romano que nos recomendaron no dejar de visitar por la noche, nos encontramos de frente al parque de *Las Méridas del mundo”, homenajeando a las ciudades hermanas de ésta que se encuentran en el resto del globo, algunas de ellas son las ciudades del mismo nombre que se encuentran en Venezuela y México.
En esta ocasión el pequeño parque, que tiene de fondo la edificación del Alacazarejo, estaba iluminado con unas luces moradas, que me encantaron, junto a una estructura de luces con el nombre de la ciudad, muy atractiva para todo el que pasaba, que se detenía a hacerse su respectiva selfie.
Puente y dique romano
Finally we arrived at the Roman bridge and the views were a real treat. It is a pedestrian bridge, which makes it possible to enjoy the walk on it calmly. The tour at night is beautiful, the lighting is arranged so that the Roman elements stand out against the immensity of the Guadiana River and leave you breathless.
Here the colorful lights that I had seen before were repeated and also looked phenomenal along the bridge reflecting in the waters of the river.
The Roman dam also looked beautiful. The entire path along the river seemed to beckon you to come down and take a stroll along the riverbank. I missed the chance to walk along it, because we were very tight on time, but I kept that image in my memory to remind me of the desire to go back that I felt at that very moment.
Finalmente llegamos al puente romano y las vistas eran todo un lujo. Es un puente peatonal, lo que hace que se pueda disfrutar del paseo sobre él con tranquilidad. El recorrido por la noche es precioso, la iluminación está dispuesta para que los elementos romanos resaltes ante la inmensidad del río Guadiana y te dejen sin aliento.
Aquí se repetían los coloridos juegos de luces que había visto antes y que, además, lucían fenomenal a lo largo del puente reflejándose en las aguas del río.
El dique romano también se veía precioso. Todo el sendero que pasa a lo largo del río parecía llamarte para que bajaras y dieras un paseo por la ribera. Me quedé con las ganas de ir a recorrerlo, porque estábamos muy justos de tiempo, pero guardé esa imagen en mi memoria para tener presente las ganas de volver que sentí justo en ese momento.

This has been just a small glimpse of how much this historic city has to offer, a bait to attract the curious and promise us lots and lots of details about the great history it has witnessed.
But I can also assure you that strolling through these streets at night, relaxing a bit after a heavy day of road travel, is extremely pleasant and very charming. I don't know what will be the best way to take advantage of a quick passage through the city, but for this time and without any planning, this experience turned out great.
So I'm going to say goodbye very happy with my friend, the orange that accompanied me while I walked the streets of her city, until I fell into temptation and decided to try it, ending the tour together with its bitter taste on my lips, literally hahaha.
Esto ha sido solo un pequeño vistazo de lo mucho que esta histórica ciudad puede ofrecer, un anzuelo para atraernos a los curiosos y prometernos muchísimos detalles sobre la grandiosa historia de la que ha sido testigo.
Pero también puedo asegurar que pasear en la noche por estas calles, relajándose un poco tras un pesado día viajando por carretera, resulta sumamente agradable y muy atractivo. No sé cual será la mejor forma de aprovechar un rápido paso por la ciudad, pero por esta vez y sin ninguna planificación, esta experiencia resultó genial.
Así que me voy a despedir muy contenta junto a mi amiga, la naranja que me acompañó mientras recorría las calles de su ciudad, hasta que caí en la tentación y decidí probarla, terminando el recorrido juntas con su amargo sabor en mis labios, literalmente jajaja.

Si de noche la ciudad es bella, imagino que a la luz del día debe ser asombrosa. España tiene ciudades muy hermosas.
Sí, lo curioso es que en este caso, esas cosas hermosas son muestra de una "conquista", por llamarlo de una manera, sobre su tierra. Las cosas de la vida.
Muchas de las cosas lindas de Cuba, también son muestra de cuando éramos Colonia de España, jaja.
hermosa experiencia la que compartir y precioso registro de esta arquitectura antigua que es como un viaje en el tiempo a la era romana .
Bueno la verdad es que es una forma de verlo, caminar por allí, encima de todas esas estructuras antiguas que están bajo la ciudad nos puede permitir imaginar un paseo en el tiempo, a veces parece increíble que todas esas cosas que han dado paso a lo actual, hayan quedado destruidas casi en su totalidad.
