Hello everyone, how are you? How are you doing now? I want to tell you about a trip I did some time ago. I joined the Jakarta tour with Ruter Passer Mester. This area is located in Jatinegara, the current name. One of the places I visited was the Jatinegara Post Office.
This time, in the Travel Journal, I will tell you about the post office. In several points in the city of Jakarta, there are a number of post offices that have designs and were built when Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch. I have tried to make a story about it. This time the historic post office is in East Jakarta.
In the past, this place was called the Outer Batavia area. This post office is also a silent witness to the history of communication in East Jakarta. So, this place is very interesting. This place was built in the 1930s. However, from history, this place has sent letters to Cirebon and Surabaya.
The letter was sent by Master Kornelis (I forgot his full name). He was a very famous person when Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch. He also built three historic post offices in Jakarta.
The most interesting thing is, although the post office was built in 1930, there is a mailbox built in 1913. The city is a blue witness to this place. While letters have been in Indonesia since 1786.
In the past, sending letters had to take up to 3 months. However, thanks to Master Kornelis, letters could arrive in two weeks. Where with the construction of Anyer Street, Banten. Another thing I want to reveal is the condition of this place. This place was indeed built in Dutch architectural style. Where it has a high roof and thick walls.
These conditions make this place cool. The building of this place is still the same as before. Some mail lockers are still there. It's just that, this place is not well maintained. The walls are rarely cleaned, just dirty. And that makes me disappointed, the Post Office is managed by the government, but there is no building maintenance
Admittedly, currently, there are not many letter sending activities anymore. Only important documents. Even then, there are now many alternative document delivery options other than the Post Office. The Post Office seems to have lost its function and identity in this modern era. But, some people still use this place.
That's all I can tell. From this tour, I want to hope a little, if the government can preserve beautiful historical buildings. What do you think? See you in the next story.
