Express visit to the North: San Sebastian and Monte Igueldo. A very green experience.

in Worldmappin2 years ago

Hello to all of you who like to travel and discover every corner of the world!

I am going to tell you part of the trip to the País Vasco that I made with my boyfriend, since we were three days, but in different areas.

The Basque Country or País Vasco is an area in the north of Spain in the west of the border with France, which is surrounded by mountains and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. It is characterized because it is a very beautiful area, all its mountains are very green, for its picturesque and beautiful villages and for the good gastronomy it has.

Our plan was a rural trip through the area of mountains, villages and green forests, but I had a friend living in San Sebastian, which is a beach city and a lot of tourism, so the first day I had to make a small detour to the city, which was not very much to my liking.

The truth is that just out of the subway parking you could see the beach, and the downtown area, or the old town, just the two most touristy areas of the area. To tell you the truth, I don't like the beach at all and even less the touristy beach places, with so many people and the humid heat of the sea, they usually overwhelm me.

We met up with my friend and her boyfriend in the best known part of the area which is the Playa de la Concha, which has that name because it looks like a shell.

As I said before I am not much of a beach person and it was an express visit so we took a walk along the promenade and took some pictures to remember with the views.

I must admit that the views, with the sunset and the mountains surrounding the beach made it a very nice place and you could almost forget about the amount of people that kept passing by and the horrible heat.

After visiting one of the most touristic parts of San Sebastian, we went to the Casco Viejo area of the city, which is the part of the bars, where you go to eat the famous pintxos, which are like a few assemblies of different things on a piece of bread and typical portions of the area.

We had to leave early as we had a reserve in a restaurant, which I hope to write about soon, which is very famous in the area for grilling wild fish.

We slept in a rural house in a mountain 20 minutes from San Sebastian so the next day before going to another area, we decided to spend the morning on Mount Igueldo.

Mount Igueldo is one of the mountains that surrounds the Concha beach, and up there is an area to spend the day with family or friends.

You had to pay 2 euros per person, but the truth was worth it because it was a very picturesque place, with beautiful views, many booths with food, salty, sweet, souvenirs and fairs for children....

The first thing we did was to go to the area with the best views, where you could see the Concha beach, the city of San Sebastian and the surrounding mountains. The truth is that seen from above and in a quieter and more beautiful place you can appreciate everything better.

Then, as we had not had breakfast or lunch, we stopped at one of the stalls to eat and drink something. They were wooden booths, with two or three small tables with stools, but luckily one remained free. As it was after 12 o'clock and I was on vacation I ordered a tinto de verano, which is wine with soda and lemon, and a slice of pizza which a sparrow tried to steal from me several times.

IMG_20230603_115310949~2.jpg

We continued walking around the area and saw that upstairs there was a terrace with umbrellas and as it was getting hot, we went to see what was there in case we could have a drink later. Then a girl who was the waitress of the beach bar that was upstairs on the terrace approached us and told us not to be embarrassed to go up to the terrace to have some mojitos.

IMG_20230603_113300940_HDR.jpg

So as she was so nice and also talked about her mojitos, when we went around the whole area we had to go upstairs to try them.

The truth is that it was worth going up, since the sea breeze was blowing upstairs and it was very nice. We sat at a bar on the railing of the terrace overlooking the sea.

I have to admit that the weather, hot but cool breeze, the blue water, the waves breaking on the sharp rocks, the green mountains and one of the best mojitos I have ever had, made it hard to think about leaving.

We were also able to see on several occasions a train pass by that is from the same establishment, which as you can see, was very rudimentary and goes on tracks that go over the cliff.

I wanted to ride it, although it was a little scary, but I was so comfortable in the sun with my mojito and the views that I had to wait to have an excuse to come back.

In the end, this express visit that I did not want to do at all turned out very well, since I could go to see my friends and be with them for a while and I could discover that area of Mount Igueldo that I liked so much and that I recommend to visit.
