Road trip To Croatia: Rijeka part one. 🩷 (ENG/ESP)

in Worldmappinlast month (edited)

Happy Saturday Hivers how are you? Today I finally found the time to write a post that I had been waiting for for several months about the last city I visited on my trip to Croatia, we are talking about Rijeka, a city very dear to Italians because it has long been disputed and above all loved by one of our most famous poets and writers, Gabriele D'Annunzio.

However, we visited this city during our last day in Croatia and above all because this is the seat of the Italian consulate where we had to go because my husband had lost his identity document. Getting to this city was not pleasant, there was really a lot of traffic and chaos in the streets, we were used to small cities, but here the streets were full and chaotic, even finding parking wasn't easy and we parked at the top of the city, to get to the main street we walked up a large staircase, called the tersetto staircase, very beautiful, made up of 550 steps, I risked my lungs but the view is beautiful and the view of the gulf is magnificent.

Rijka is a city that mixes ancient with modern, there is an area dedicated to large skyscrapers and buildings which are symptoms of the strong building expansion of recent years but there are also ancient and rich streets, it is a very colorful city full of life and people, shops, bars, restaurants, a very vital and modern place. It is also a multi-ethnic city made up of many populations also because it was Italian, Hungarian, Yugoslavian and finally Croatian, there are people from all the Balkans and also many Italians. The main streets are in my opinion magnificent because they have many beautiful buildings, with an almost regal appearance, some are offices and schools but others are real symbols of the city, the smaller streets instead hide small surprises, colorful murals and delightful bistros and shops selling typical products. Now I'll leave you with some photos and then I'll come back to talk to you about this magnificent city, the Italian consulate and our return journey through Slovenia, another country that I would really like to visit!

World's apart from my place on the south coast of Africa. I hope to visit once day.

Loved reading about your experience in Rijeka! The mix of ancient and modern architecture is fascinating - the old town's colorful murals and bistros sound like a treasure trove to discover
