The Philippines is blessed with diverse landscapes that provide countless experiences for its visitors and locals alike. One such beloved destination is Baguio City, a mountain retreat nestled in the Luzon region, famous for its cool climate, pine trees, and strawberry plantations. However, on the opposite side of the country, in Mindanao, lies a hidden gem that mirrors Baguio's beauty—Matampa in Salay, Misamis Oriental. Often called "Little Baguio" by locals, this enchanting place provides the same chilly atmosphere, lush pine trees, and serene mountain views. My recent visit to Matampa was not just an adventure, but also a journey of reconnection with someone I thought I had lost forever—my “TOTGA” (The One That Got Away) from thirteen years ago.
It all began after we reconnected through social media. Life had kept us both busy, and work had taken its toll. So, when we finally spoke again, the idea of embarking on an adventure together seemed like the perfect escape from the grind. We wanted to explore a place neither of us had ever been, and Matampa, a place we heard so much about, felt like the ideal destination. The "Little Baguio" of Mindanao sounded alluring, promising the same magical aura of Baguio but with a sense of seclusion and exclusivity.
When we arrived, the weather was drizzly and the sky was overcast—perfect conditions for solitude. It turned out to be a blessing, as we found ourselves with the entire place to ourselves. The cold breeze, mixed with the occasional rain, created a peaceful, almost mystical vibe that enveloped the landscape. We rented a cozy kubo (nipa hut), where we pitched our tent for the night. As the rain slowed, we began preparing dinner, enjoying the quiet calm as fog rolled over the hills, enhancing the already tranquil surroundings.
After our meal, we explored the grounds. Under a large tree, we found a well-lit bench where we sat for a while, admiring the misty night. The air was brisk, and as the fog deepened, the temperature dropped. It was soon cold enough to drive us back to the tent, where we spent hours talking about life, reminiscing, and sharing stories of the paths that had led us back to each other after all these years. Just as we settled in, the sky, which had been clouded for most of the evening, suddenly cleared.
What happened next was one of the most breathtaking moments I have ever experienced. As I glanced up, I saw a sky dotted with stars—so many that it felt like I was staring at the very heart of the galaxy. The sight of the Milky Way seemed unreal, but there it was, stretching across the sky in all its splendor. I excitedly grabbed my phone to capture the moment, not expecting much due to the limitations of my low-end device. But to my surprise, when I reviewed the photos, I realized I had captured a decent shot of the Milky Way. It was my first successful attempt, and the joy I felt was indescribable. The simple act of gazing at the stars, paired with the serenity of Matampa, felt like magic.
The next morning was equally mesmerizing. As the first light of dawn broke through, the stillness of the surroundings was palpable. Stepping out of the tent, we were greeted by a breathtaking view of the mountain ranges. To our right, we could see the vast expanse of the ocean, with the nearby city visible in the distance. Behind us stood tall pine trees swaying gently in the cool breeze, as if inviting us to take a leisurely stroll and soak in the tranquility.
It felt as though time had stopped in Matampa. The simplicity of the environment, the pure air, the majestic views—it all came together to create an unforgettable experience. We spent the morning walking among the pine trees, marveling at the peace that surrounded us. It felt like we had found a little piece of paradise tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
As we packed up and prepared to leave, neither of us could shake the feeling that we had discovered something special, not just in Matampa, but also in the renewed connection between us. The trip had been spontaneous, yet it had provided us with a deep sense of fulfillment. Matampa had gifted us with quiet moments, awe-inspiring views, and a chance to reflect on our past and future.
In the end, Matampa, with its cool weather, pine trees, and breathtaking views, more than lived up to its reputation as "Little Baguio" of Mindanao. It was an experience filled with wonder, warmth, and reconnection, and we left with a promise to return. This hidden gem in Misamis Oriental may not yet be as famous as its Luzon counterpart, but it holds its own kind of magic. And for those seeking peace, adventure, or simply a break from the world, Matampa offers all that and more.
Guess what happened next? :D
