Edam is a picturesque provincial town near Amsterdam. Its history began in the XII century, when farmers and fishermen settled near a dam on a small river. The name of the city can be translated as "dam on the E River". It's known primarily as the birthplace of the world-famous cheese.
There are 176 national monuments in Edam, and the city center is a protected area.Hello everybody! I haven't published about Europe for a long time. Last time I told you about the Keukenhof flower park in the Netherlands, which I visited in 2019 (https://ecency.com/hive-163772/@oleftinka/eng-and-ru-travel-memories-1ba08577ba9a7). Today I will share my impressions about the next Dutch city that we visited after the Keukenhof - Edam.

Сегодня я поделюсь впечатлениями о следующем голландском городе, в котором мы побывали после парка Кекенхоф - Эдам.
Among the most popular attractions are the Grote Kerk (church of St. Nicholas). It's one of the largest temples in the Netherlands and belongs to the 100 best national monuments of the country. The length of the attraction is 88 m, width - 35 m, wall thickness from 1 to 2.5 m. The stained-glass windows of the XVII century have been preserved in the church in an amazing way. This is very rare for Holland, because after the victory of Protestantism, the stained glass windows in almost all churches were removed.
The construction of the church began at the beginning of the XV century, and the citizens chose the place for the temple in an original way. They brought a bull to the center of Edam and released it, deciding where the animal would lie down, and there the church would stand. The bull chose a clearing on the outskirts of the city. Who knows how true the legend is, but the fact that the temple is located on the north-western outskirts of Edam is a fact.

Она является одним из самых больших храмов Нидерландов и принадлежит к 100 лучшим национальным памятникам страны. Длина достопримечательности составляет 88 м, ширина – 35 м, толщина стен от 1 до 2,5 м. В церкви удивительным образом сохранились витражи XVII века. Для Голландии это большая редкость, потому что после победы протестантизма витражи почти во всех церквях были удалены.
Строительство церкви началось в начале XV в., причем место для храма горожане выбрали оригинальным способом. Они привели в центр Эдама быка и отпустили его, решив, где животное ляжет, там и будет стоять церковь. Бык выбрал поляну на окраине города. Кто знает, насколько правдива легенда, но то, что храм находится на северо-западной окраине Эдама – это факт.
The next attraction was the square where the cheese market is held. On the square there is a former Weighing Chamber (De Kaaswaag) – a mini-museum of cheese production and at the same time a shop, where you can look at the tools used for artisanal cheese making. The De Kaaswaag building still has beautifully decorated panels, where the coat of arms of Edam is depicted in the center – a bull with three stars on a red background, and on the sides there are paintings related to the weighing procedure.

На площади стоит бывшая Весовая палата (De Kaaswaag) – мини-музей производства сыра и одновременно магазин, там можно посмотреть на инструменты, используемые для кустарного изготовления сыра. На здании De Kaaswaag до сих пор сохранились красиво украшенные панели, где в центре изображен герб Эдама – на красном фоне бык с тремя звездами, а по бокам картины, связанные с процедурой взвешивания.
Going further into the city, we saw a bridge over the river, an old drawbridge made of wood, Kvakelbrug. It offers picturesque views of the city.

The most important square of the city is, of course, Dam Square. The old town hall is located on it. This landmark was built in the first half of the XVIII century. One of the halls still keeps the first plaster. It can also be seen in some corridors, as well as on the stairs. All the walls are beautifully painted and are characterized by stories from the Bible. Some rooms still have furniture and a fireplace. Now the building is used for a variety of purposes: it houses the office of a travel agency, weddings and other events are often held. On the ground floor there is a museum where various expositions are displayed.

Один из залов до сих пор хранит первую штукатурку. Ее также можно увидеть в некоторых коридорах, а также на лестнице. Все стены красиво расписаны и характеризуются сюжетами из Библии. В некоторых залах до сих пор хранится мебель, камин. Сейчас постройка используется в самых разных целях: в ней расположен офис турагентства, часто проводятся свадьбы и другие мероприятия. На первом этаже расположен музей, где выставлены различные экспозиции.
Edam Museum is a house that used to belong to a merchant. It was built in the first half of the XVI century. Many people don't even suspect that it used to be a residential building, thanks to the beautiful facade, which was decorated a little later. The attraction provides an opportunity to see and learn how people used to live. The exhibits reveal the history of the past of Edam, its districts, the construction of ships, as well as the most important – the production of cheese. In addition, you can consider samples of ceramics. There is a basement floor under the museum, in which water flows. You can go here and see everything with your own eyes. You can explain the floating basement simply – the owner of the house was a sailor who missed the sea terribly at home.
Эдамский музей представляет собой дом, который раньше принадлежал купцу. Он построен еще в первой половине XVI столетия. Многие и не подозревают, о том, что раньше это был жилой дом, благодаря красивому фасаду, который был оформлен немного позже. Достопримечательность предоставляет возможность увидеть и узнать, как люди жили раньше. Экспонаты раскрывают историю прошлого Эдама, его округов, строительства суден, а также самого важного – изготовления сыра. Кроме этого, можно рассмотреть образцы керамики. Под музеем есть этаж – подвал, в котором течет вода. Сюда можно зайти и увидеть все своими глазами. Объяснить плавающий подвал можно просто – владелец дома был моряком, которому дома жутко не хватало моря.
If you want to see "what Holland looked like in the old days", then I advise you to visit Edam. A small, childlike fairy-tale city for its official 650 years has hardly changed, hasn't grown, but has fallen asleep for centuries, like a sleeping beauty, and the center there is the same as in the old picture of the German artist. By the way, there is another atmospheric Dutch town nearby, which I will tell you about next time.
Если вы хотите увидеть «как выглядела Голландия в старые времена», то я советую вам посетить Эдам. Маленький, по-детски сказочный, город за свои официальные 650 лет почти не изменился, не разросся, а заснул на века, как спящая красавица, и центр там такой же, как и на старой картине немецкого художника. Кстати рядом находится еще один атмосферный голландский городок, о котором я расскажу в следующий раз.
