Some time ago my dad bought himself an off-road vehicle. It's an old Jeep, but since they used to make almost indestructible cars, despite being 30 years old this jeep is still quite good. Until now Dad usually drove it around the Polish part of the Bieszczady Mountains and once tried to go to Ukraine to drive off-road on the other side of the border. However, he still had distant plans to go to the Balkans by car someday, because there is no better place in Europe for off-road driving than the Balkans. So this year I thought it could be a good present for Dad, so I bought participation in an organized week-long expedition in off-road vehicles around Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jakiś czas temu mój tata kupił sobie samochód terenowy. Jest to stary Jeep, ale ponieważ kiedyś produkowali niemal niezniszczalne samochody , to pomimo 30 lat wieku ten jeep jest jeszcze całkiem sprawy. Do tej pory Tata zwykle jeździł nim po polskiej części Bieszczad i raz spróbował zrobić sobie wyjazd na Ukrainę aby pojeździć offroadem po drugiej stronie granicy. Natomiast cały czas snuł odległe plany, aby pojechać kiedyś samochodem na Bałkany, bo nie ma lepszego miejsca w Europie na offroadową jazdę niż Bałkany. Tak więc w tym roku pomyślałem, że to mógłby być dobry prezent dla taty więc wykupiłem udział w zorganizowanej tygodniowej wyprawie samochodami terenowymi po Bośni i Hercegowinie.

The whole expedition started on Sunday late evening at a campsite in the Croatian town of Slavonski Brod. There we had an introductory evening, a short off-road driving instruction and the regulations of the expedition and the next day we entered Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first day was quite specific, because it consisted solely of driving in the forest right next to the Croatian-Bosnian border. Ruts, mud, steep climbs, narrow roads on a steep slope and no particular places worth describing. Things started to get more interesting on the second day when we went to Tajan National Park. It is located in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina about 50 kilometers north of the capital Sarajevo. The name of the park comes from a mountain 1297 meters above sea level, which is the highest peak in this area. Tajan Park covers 50 square kilometers, and since 2008 it has been recognized as a protected area as a natural monument. The park is full of streams, canyons and caves, all covered with endemic vegetation.

Cała wyprawa zaczęła się w niedzielę późnym wieczorem na kempingu w Chorwackiej miejscowości Slavonski Brod. Tam mieliśmy wieczór zapoznawczy, krótką instrukcje jazdy offroadowej i regulamin wyprawy i kolejnego dnia wjechaliśmy do Bośni i Hercegowiny. Pierwszy dzień był dość specyficzny, bo polegał wyłącznie na jeżdżeniu po lesie tuż przy granicy Chorwacko – Bośniackiej. Koleiny, błoto, strome podjazdy wąskie drogi na stromym zboczu i żadnych szczególnych miejsc wartych opisania. Ciekawiej zaczęło się dopiero drugiego dnia kiedy to pojechaliśmy do Parku Narodowego Tajan. Znajduje się on w centralnej części Bośni i Hercegowiny około 50 kilometrów na północ od stolicy kraju Sarajewa. Nazwa parku wywodzi się od góry liczącej 1297 metrów nad poziomem morza będącej najwyższym szczytem na tym obszarze. Park Tajan obejmuje 50 km kwadratowych, a od 2008 r. uznany jest za obszar chroniony jako pomnik przyrody. W parku aż roi się od strumieni, kanionów i jaskiń, a to wszystko jest porośnięte endemiczną roślinnością.

After reaching the center of the park, we took a walk through the forest for about an hour, the goal of which was the Tajan cave, famous for its extensive archaeological finds. Among the finds were the bones of a 15 thousand year old extinct cave bear, a cave hyena and a red deer. Now, when we entered the cave, we found only bats and countless stalagmites, stalagnates and stalactites. In total, there are as many as 100 similar caves in the Tajan park, which makes this area an ideal wintering ground for Bosnian bears. Interestingly, next to the park there is a strange inn, where as a tourist attraction the owner keeps a pair of bears with whom you can take a photo, but unfortunately no one dared to do such madness. In the Tajan park there is a canyon with a picturesque lake Mašica and that was the end of our intense day.

Po dotarciu do centrum parku zrobiliśmy sobie mniej więcej godzinną wędrówkę przez las której celem była jaskinia Tajana słynąca z rozległych znalezisk archeologicznych. Wśród znalezisk były kości 15 tysięcy lat wymarłego niedźwiedzia jaskiniowego, hieny jaskiniowej i jelenia rudego. Obecnie gdy my weszliśmy do jaskini znaleźliśmy tam wyłącznie nietoperze i niezliczone stalagmity, stalagnaty i stalaktyty. Ogólnie podobnych jaskiń w parku Tajan znajduje się aż 100 podobnych jaskiń co sprawia, że obszar ten jest idealnym legowiskiem do zimowania dla bośniackich niedźwiedzi. Co ciekawe obok parku znajduje się pewna dziwna karczma, w której jako atrakcje turystyczną właściciel przetrzymuje parę niedźwiedzi z którą można zrobić sobie zdjęcie, ale niestety nikt nie odważył się na takie szaleństwo. W parku Tajan znajduje się kanion z malowniczym jeziorkiem Mašica i to właśnie był koniec naszego intensywnego dnia.
