We decided quite quickly that Greece would be the destination of our holiday this year. However, the subject of heated discussions was how to get to Greece. We chose Greece as the destination of this year's holiday, but I must admit that we thought for a long time about how to get to Greece. There were two ways, either flying to Thessaloniki, for example, and renting a car there, or the second, slightly more arduous option, which involved driving our own car for 1,500 kilometers from Poland to Greece. In the end, we decided to drive for 1,500 kilometers and, looking back, I think it was a good decision. Unfortunately, this option had one drawback. Even if I laid an egg, I would not have driven 1,500 kilometers from Poland to Greece in one go. It was necessary to plan a stop along the way and it so happened that the halfway point was in a very interesting place, namely Novi Sad in Serbia. This city with a population of 341,625 is located on the left bank of the Danube, while on the right bank of the Danube there is the village of Petrovaradin, inhabited by only 13,973 people, built around the former Petrovaradin fortress. It so happens that the history of Novi Sad is directly derived from the history of the Petrovaradin fortress, namely, Novi Sad was founded in the 17th century as a settlement for the builders of the fortress. Petrovaradin, often called by Serbs the "Gibraltar of the Danube", was a fortress designed to defend the Austrians against the Turks, and it must be admitted that the history of the fortress was turbulent. In the years 1526 - 1687 the fortress was in the hands of the Turks; later it came under the rule of the Austrians. In 1848 the fortress was captured by Hungarian rebels, but they were surrounded and after almost a year of siege on September 6, 1849 they had to surrender it to the Austrians. In 1918 the fortress was annexed to Yugoslavia; and after the collapse of Yugoslavia it found itself in Serbia.

To, że to Grecja będzie celem naszych tegorocznych wakacji ustaliliśmy dość szybko, Natomiast przedmiotem burzliwych dyskusji był sposób jak się do tej Grecji dostać. Jako cel tegorocznych wakacji obraliśmy Grecję, ale musze przyznać, że długo myśleliśmy nad sposobem jak dostać się do Grecji. Sposoby były dwa, albo lot samolotem np. do Salonik i tam wynajęcie auta, lub druga trochę bardziej uciążliwa opcja polegająca na przejechaniu własnym autem 1500 kilometrów z Polski do Grecji. Finalnie zdecydowaliśmy się jechać autem przez 1500 kilometrów i z perspektywy czasu uważam to za dobrą decyzję. Niestety ta opcja miała jedną wadę. Choćbym jajo zniósł, to nie przejechałbym 1500 kilometrów z Polski do Grecji za jednym razem. Konieczne było zaplanowanie postoju po drodze i tak się złożyło, że połowa drogi wypadła w bardzo ciekawym miejscu, a konkretnie w Nowym Sadzie w Serbii.
To liczące 341625 mieszkańców miasto leży nad lewym brzegiem Dunajem natomiast nad prawym brzegiem Dunaju znajduje się zamieszkiwana zaledwie przez 13 973 osób wieś Petrovaradin zbudowana wokół dawnej twierdzy Petrovaradin. Tak się składa, że historia Nowego Sadu bezpośrednio wywodzi się z historii twierdzy Petrovaradin, a mianowicie, Nowy Sad został założony w XVII wieku jako osada dla budowniczych twierdzy. Petrovaradin nazywany często przez Serbow „Gibraltarem Dunaju” był obiektem fortecznym mającym na celu obronę Austriaków przed Turkami a trzeba przyznać że dzieje twierdzy były burzliwe. W latach 1526 - 1687 twierdza pozostawała w rękach Turków; później przeszła pod władanie Austriaków. W roku 1848 twierdza została zdobyta przez powstańców Węgierskich, ale zostali okrążeniu i po niemal rocznym oblężeniu 6 września 1849 musieli go oddać Austriakom. W 1918 roku twierdza została przyłączona do Jugosławii; a po rozpadzie Jugosławii znalazł się w Serbii.

On the left bank of the Danube, however, it was much quieter, and thanks to this, Novi Sad became the third largest city in all of Serbia. Over the years, Novi Sad has grown into a major economic and cultural center, and its importance is best demonstrated by the fact that in 2021 Novi Sad was the European Capital of Culture. And for almost 20 years, Novi Sad has hosted one of the largest music festivals in Europe, namely the Exit festival. The places we visited included the previously mentioned Petrovaradin fortress, where we treated ourselves to delicious lemonade and, using the access to the Wi-Fi network, we were able to load the next section of the road on our car navigation. Then we returned to the other side of the Danube and took a walk around the city center, visiting the 18th century Church of the Name of Mary in Novi Sad, the historic building of the City Hall, and Danube Park. After two, maybe three hours of rest in Novi Sad, we set off on our way to Greece, but we noted Novi Sad as a place worth returning to someday.

Natomiast na lewym brzegu Dunaju było dużo spokojniej i dzięki temu Nowy Sad stał się trzecim największym miastem w całej Serbii. Przez lata Nowy Sad wyrósł na główne centrum gospodarcze i kulturalne, a o jego randze może najlepiej świadczyć fakt, że w roku 2021 Nowy Sad był Europejską Stolicą Kultury. No i od niemal 20 lat odbywa się w Nowym Sadzie jeden z największych festiwali muzycznych w Europie, a mianowicie Exit festiwal. Odwiedzone przez nas miejsca to wspomniana wcześniej twierdza Petrovaradin na której poczęstowaliśmy się pyszną lemoniadą i wykorzystując dostęp do sieci Wi-Fi mogliśmy załadować sobie w nawigacji samochodowej dalszy odcinek drogi. Potem wróciliśmy na druga stronę Dunaju i zrobiliśmy sobie spacer po centrum miasta odwiedzając XVIII wieczny Kościół Imienia Maryi w Nowym Sadzie, zabytkowy budynek Urzędu Miasta, oraz Danube Park. Po dwóch, może trzech godzinach odpoczynku w Nowym Sadzie ruszyliśmy w dalszą drogę do Grecji, ale Nowy Sad zapisaliśmy sobie jako miejsce, gdzie warto jeszcze kiedyś wrócić.
