In Poland, can mountain climbing only be practiced in the Tatra Mountains? Of course not! There are several places in the Karkonosze Mountains that are simply impossible to traverse without very good mountain climbing skills. This place is a glacial cirque located between Wielki Szyszak, 1,509 meters above sea level, and Elbe Peak, 1,471 meters above sea level. These cauldrons were called Snow Cauldrons, probably because in winter a lot of snow, or rather ice, accumulates on the rocky edges, because it is one of the windiest places I have ever seen in my life, so the snow falling in that place quickly turns into snow. into ice. The depth of Śnieżne Kotły is about 300 meters, and the rock walls are up to 150 meters high. They are interspersed with numerous gullies posing an additional challenge for climbers.
Śnieżne Kotły are so recognizable because there is an extremely characteristic building on their top. There is a radio and television relay station, which was once a tourist shelter.
Its history dates back to 1837, when Count Leopold Christian Gotthard von Schaffgotsch, the owner of these areas, built the first tourist shelter in the Sudetes above Śnieżne Kotły near the Devil's Pulpit. The small building, with only two beds and a dining room with two tables, stood until 1858, when a storm damaged the structure. The owner decided to build a new one-story stone shelter in this place, which was much larger than the previous one, because it had 21 beds. The construction was completed in 1861. The shelter on Śnieżne Kotły must have been very popular, because in 1892 it was decided to build another, even larger facility. A huge mountain hotel was built, one of the largest in the Sudetes. The new building was distinguished by its unusual form with a particularly high observation tower inspired by the shape of the Chojnik castle. Inside there were a total of 5 restaurant rooms and 60 beds. A real luxury. At the outbreak of World War II, the shelter was taken over by the Luftwaffe and turned into a recreation center for its soldiers. In 1944, the Luftwaffe organized a radar station in the shelter, and after the war it passed into Polish hands. the Wawel shelter was opened in the building. In 1961, the radar station was used for military purposes as an object of key importance for the defense of the Warsaw Pact. It was considered secret, later erased from all maps, and the road to it was closed. Currently, after many years, the building functions only as a tower transmitting radio and television signals.

Czy w Polsce wspinaczkę wysokogórską można uprawiać wyłącznie w Tatrach? Oczywiście, że nie! We wnętrzu było w sumie 5 sal restauracyjnych i 60 miejsc noclegowych. Istny luksus. W momencie wybuchy II wojny światowej schronisko zostało przejęte przez Luftwaffe i zorganizowano w nim na ośrodek wypoczynkowy dla swoich żołnierzy. W 1944 roku Luftwaffe zorganizowało w schronisku stację radiolokacyjną, a po wojnie gdy przeszła w polskie ręce. otworzono w budynku schronisko Wawel. W roku 1961 stacja radiolokacyjna przeszła na cele wojskowe jako obiekt o kluczowym znaczeniu dla obronności Układu Warszawskiego został uznany za tajny, później wymazany ze wszystkich map, a droga do niego została zamknięta. Obecnie po wielu latach budynek funkcjonuje już tylko jako wieża nadająca sygnał radiowy i telewizyjny.
