The Tropicana cabaret, known worldwide as Paradise under the stars, has managed to evade the ravages of time and has now been in existence for eight decades. The place, formerly a beautiful mansion nestled in the old grounds of a farm began to function as a cabaret in 1939, in it masterfully mixes the show atmosphere in a wooded area and in the open air.
It was one of the busiest casinos on the American continent. Despite the fact that the place became more and more visited and enlarged, it was always a wish to maintain the tropical atmosphere and the grove full of fruit trees and precious woods.
Tropicana became known outside the borders of Cuba with the show “Congo Pantera”, unprecedented on the island. The venue manager arranged for the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet to dance for a Tropicana performance to the beat of Cuban drums. Iconic of this show is the fact that the Russian dancer Tania Leskova, in the middle of the show, descended from one of the trees in the place, leaving the spectators dumbfounded. This show marked a before and after in Tropicana. Then in 1952 Tropicana presented an air show inspired by this act, which made it the first cabaret in the world to perform a flight in full show. Currently the last act of the show is precisely that leap into the void of one of the dancers, for two reasons, the tradition and the history that it represents and because it never ceases to amaze the viewer.
El cabaret Tropicana, conocido mundialmente como el Paraíso bajo las estrellas, ha logrado burlar los embates del tiempo y alcanzó ya las ocho décadas de existencia. El lugar, antes una hermosa mansión enclavada en los antiguos terrenos de una finca comenzó a funcionar como cabaret en 1939, en él se mezcla magistralmente el ambiente de espectáculo en una zona boscosa y al aire libre.
Fue uno de los casinos más concurridos del continente americano. Pese a que cada vez se volvía más visitado y se agrandaba el local, siempre fue deseo mantener el ambiente tropical y la arboleda llena de frutales y maderos preciosos.
Tropicana se dio a conocer fuera de las fronteras de Cuba con el espectáculo “Congo Pantera”, sin precedentes en la isla. El administrador del lugar logró que el ballet ruso de Montecarlo bailara para una función de Tropicana al ritmo de los tambores de Cuba. Es icónico de este espectáculo el hecho de que la bailarina rusa Tania Leskova, en el medio del show, descendía de uno de los árboles del lugar, dejando estupefactos a los espectadores. Este show marcó un antes y un después en Tropicana. Luego en 1952 Tropicana presentaba un show aéreo inspirado en este acto, que lo convirtió en el primer cabaret en el mundo en realizar un vuelo en pleno espectáculo. Actualmente el último acto del show es precisamente ese salto al vacío de una de las bailarinas, por dos razones, la tradición y la historia que este representa y porque no deja de sorprender al espectador.
Decades of splendor
The splendor in the 50's is due to his tours around the world. One of his great shows was Rodney Circus. A mix between a circus act and a musical. There, animals were seen parading through the stage, lions, leopards, elephants and monkeys joined the acrobats, trapeze artists, contortionists, clowns and dancers in a show of great magnitude and avant-garde for the time.
The decade of the 80's and 90's was very important for this cabaret because its presentations were required by such important places as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, Monaco, Friedrichstadt Palace in Berlin and the Beacon Theater Broadway in New York. In that same year, he was honored by the North American Academy of the Restaurant Industry with the coveted Best of the Best Five Star Diamond award. In 1996, Japanese fashion designer Junko Koshino presented her collection at a show. In December 1999 Tropicana was chosen as the host for a live show, sponsored by the American television giants ABC and CNN, celebrating the end of the 20th century. Undoubtedly, after so much history, it was declared a National Monument in 2002 and already has two sister facilities in other provinces of Cuba.

El esplendor en los 50´s se debe a sus giras por el mundo. Uno de sus grandes espectáculos fue Rodney Circus. Una mezcla entre un acto circense y un musical. Allí se vieron animales desfilar por el escenario, leones, leopardos, elefantes y monos se sumaron a los acróbatas, trapecistas, contorsionistas, payasos y bailarines en un show de gran magnitud y vanguardista para la época.
La década de los 80´s y 90´s fue muy importante para este cabaret pues sus presentaciones eran requeridas por tan importantes plazas como lo son el Royal Albert Hall de Londres, Sporting Club de Montecarlo, Mónaco, Friedrichstadt Palace de Berlin y el Beacon Theatre Broadway de New York. En ese mismo año fue distinguido por la Academia Norteamericana de la Industria de Restaurantes con el codiciado premio Best of the Best Five Star Diamond. En 1996 la diseñadora de modas japonesa Junko Koshino presentó su colección en un desfile. En diciembre de 1999 Tropicana fue elegido como cede para un show en vivo, auspiciado por los gigantes televisivos norteamericanos ABC y CNN, celebrando el fin del siglo XX. Sin dudas, luego de tanta historia fue declarado en 2002 Monumento Nacional y ya cuenta con dos instalaciones hermanas en otras provincias de Cuba.

Writers such as Ernest Hemingway, actors such as Maria Félix and Marlon Brandon, world-class singers such as Frank Sinatra and Cuban Omara Portuondo, politicians such as former Cuban President Fulgencio Batista and young John F. Kennedy (when he still did not dream of being president), gangsters and gangsters like Meyer Lanski, Lucky Luciano and Alcapone, important businessmen, models, dancers, film directors etc. This is also one of its main attractions.
