On the way to Monção, we came across the small and serene village of Lapela, a place that, although discreet, hides a unique charm, almost like a peaceful refuge in the heart of northern Portugal. The road that takes us here is full of rural landscapes ending in the village so you can take a break from the busy pace of the world.

A caminho de Monção, deparamo-nos com a pequena e serena vila de Lapela, um local que, embora discreto, esconde um charme único, quase como um refúgio tranquilo no coração do norte de Portugal. A estrada, que nos leva até aqui está repleta de paisagens rurais terminando na vila para que se faça uma pausa no ritmo apressado do mundo.
Lapela is a village of modest dimensions, where calm and tranquility prevail. Its narrow, winding streets are surrounded by simple, traditional stone houses that maintain the appearance of a rural community that has not been consumed by the fast pace of modernity. Some older houses still have wooden windows with shutters that, although worn by time, have not lost their original charm.

Lapela é uma vila de dimensões modestas, onde a calma e a tranquilidade dominam. As suas ruas estreitas e sinuosas são rodeadas por casas simples, de arquitetura tradicional, em pedra, que mantêm intacto o aspeto de uma comunidade rural que não se deixou consumir pelo ritmo acelerado da modernidade. Algumas casas, mais antigas, mantêm as janelas de madeira, com persianas que, embora já desgastadas pelo tempo, não perderam o seu encanto original.
One of the town's most notable landmarks is, without a doubt, the old railway station. Although it is no longer in use, the building still retains the grandeur of times gone by, when Lapela was a transit point for travelers heading to Monção or other more distant locations. The stone station is a reminder of a time when the train was the main connection with the rest of the country. The building, although very old, has remained firm over the years, as if it held the memories and stories of the many who passed through there, anxious for the departure or arrival of their loved ones.

Um dos pontos de maior destaque da vila é, sem dúvida, a antiga estação ferroviária. Embora já desactivada, o edifício ainda conserva a imponência de outros tempos, quando Lapela era um ponto de passagem para viajantes que se dirigiam a Monção ou a outras localidades mais distantes. A estação, em pedra, é uma recordação de uma época em que o comboio representava a principal ligação com o resto do país. O edifício, embora muito antigo, mantém-se firme com o passar dos anos, como se guardasse as memórias e histórias dos muitos que ali passaram, ansiosos pela partida ou pela chegada dos seus mais queridos.
Around the station, there is total tranquility. The streets that surround it are deserted and bustling, and the only movement is the occasional car passing by, a bicycle or a conversation between the few who live here. Lapela has a small population, which contributes to the feeling that time stretches out there and life is lived at a calmer pace. We saw about ten people and three children.

Em volta da estação, a tranquilidade é total. As ruas que a rodeiam são desertas de pressas, e o único movimento é o ocasional carro que passa, uma bicicleta ou uma conversa entre os poucos que aqui vivem. Lapela tem uma população reduzida, o que contribui para a sensação de que ali o tempo se estende e se vive a um ritmo mais calmo. Vimos se tanto, umas dez pessoas e três crianças.
The only café in the village, with its small terrace, is probably the meeting point for the community. There is no (apparent) rush, and each visit to the café seems to be a pause in time, an opportunity to share stories, or simply to be in silence, accompanied by the rhythm of local life. There, in addition to having a coffee, they can also buy some basic necessities as it also functions as a small grocery store.

O único café da vila, com a sua pequena esplanada, é, provavelmente, o ponto de encontro da comunidade. Não há pressa (aparente), e cada visita ao café parece ser uma pausa no tempo, uma oportunidade para partilhar histórias, ou simplesmente, para estar em silêncio, acompanhados pelo ritmo da vida local. Ali para além de tomar um café, podem ainda adquirir alguns bens de primeira necessidade pois funciona também como uma pequena mercearia.
There are no major tourist attractions, nor major commercial movements. The village is a haven of tranquility, where life happens at a slow pace. The beauty of Lapela lies in its quietness and its ability to make those who pass by feel like they are part of a slower, more introspective time, where the hustle and bustle of everyday life is left at the door and tranquility is, for a few moments, the only company.

Não há grandes atrações turísticas, nem grandes movimentações comerciais. A vila é um refúgio de tranquilidade, onde a vida acontece a um ritmo calmo. A beleza de Lapela está na sua quietude e na sua capacidade de fazer, quem por aqui passa sentir-se como parte de um tempo mais lento e mais introspectivo, onde a agitação do dia a dia é deixada à porta e a tranquilidade é, por alguns momentos, a única companhia.

Lapela sounds like the perfect place to escape the noise of the world. With quiet streets and a café that doubles as a store, the only "traffic" here must be when two bicycles cross paths. What a peaceful place! 😄
