CASA DE MÉRTOLA & OFICINA DE TECELAGEM.jpg

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

After visiting the Castle and the surrounding area, we went down the hill and went to see Casa de Mértola and its Weaving Workshop where tradition comes to life in every detail. Here we can enjoy an experience in the world of traditional arts and crafts, particularly with regard to weaving.
Casa de Mértola is not just an exhibition space, it is above all, a space for cultural preservation.

The construction of Casa de Mértola carries with it the weight of history, and the whitewashed walls, typical of regional architecture, give the space a feeling of freshness and tranquility. The structure of the house is organized in such a way as to guide people through different exhibition areas, where it is possible to observe furniture and objects of daily use. The story goes that 7 people lived here (2 parents and 5 children), with most of their daily life taking place on the street and not at home.

Right next door we find the Weaving Workshop. This is where ancestral know-how is kept alive and passed on to new generations. The looms, manual machines used since ancient times, reveal objects of technical and cultural beauty. It was possible to observe the patience and skill required to operate a manual loom, where each thread is carefully interwoven to form unique patterns and designs. One of the areas that impressed me most was the exhibition dedicated to weaving materials and techniques.

Here, several types of natural fibers that are or were used by artisans in the region are presented, such as wool, linen and cotton. Each fiber has its unique properties, and we are invited to discover the history and production process of each one. We loved the direct contact with experienced weavers who, working on old manual looms, shared their experience and explained each step of the weaving process, from preparing the fibers to creating the typical Alentejo patterns.
It is also possible to admire various textile pieces, such as blankets, rugs and bedspreads. Each piece is unique and contains, in each thread, a part of Mértola's history and identity. It is impossible not to feel a deep respect for the dedication and care that shines through in each product on display.

With this visit it was possible to understand the importance of preserving traditional arts and crafts in the context of modernity. By valuing and publicizing the legacy of Sergipe weaving, it not only strengthens local cultural identity, but also raises public awareness about the relevance of sustainability and authenticity in handmade practices. In addition to their historical and cultural value, these spaces play an essential role as a space for transmitting knowledge, where tradition and innovation meet in harmonious synchrony.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
