The city of Tui, located in Galicia, in the north of Spain, is a place of contrasts, where history mixes with the tranquility of its most hidden corners. The old part of the city is a true testament to its long and rich history, which has roots dating back to Roman times, although it was throughout the Middle Ages that Tui flourished as an important religious and commercial center.

It was a cold and rainy day, typical of the Galician winter, with the sky covered by heavy clouds that threatened more rain. The city, however, did not seem to lose its charm. The cobblestone streets of the old town, damp from the constant falling rain, reflected a soft light that came from the few openings in the cloudy sky. The facades of the houses, made of aged stone, contrasted with the green of the plants that peeked through the window sills.

The narrow, winding streets of Tui's old town are an invitation to take a calm, contemplative stroll. In the heart of this area stands the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria, a Romanesque building that dominates the main square. The cathedral, with its austere and imposing façade, seems to take over the city with an expression that mixes serenity and strength.

As ruas estreitas e sinuosas da zona antiga de Tui são um convite ao passeio calmo e contemplativo. No coração deste núcleo, ergue-se a imponente Catedral de Santa Maria, um edifício de arquitetura românica que domina a praça principal. A catedral, com a sua fachada austera e imponente, parece tomar conta da cidade com uma expressão que mistura serenidade e força.
Around the cathedral, the city's streets and alleys narrow, and we can find small hidden squares, where even in this weather it is tempting to stop on a terrace and just admire the view. The city seems to be a reflection of its own time, with ancient buildings that seem to tell stories from centuries past, many of them still untouched by modernity. The combination of medieval and Renaissance elements in the buildings, with the imposing arches and windows, give Tui the aura of a city that preserves its ancestral character.

Ao redor da catedral, as ruas e vielas da cidade estreitam-se, e podemos encontrar pequenas praças escondidas, onde mesmo com este tempo apetece parar numa explanada e ficar so a admirar a vista. A cidade parece ser um reflexo do seu próprio tempo, com edifícios antigos que parecem contar histórias de séculos passados, muitas delas ainda intocadas pela modernidade. A combinação de elementos medievais e renascentistas nas construções, com as arcadas e janelas de formas imponentes, dão a Tui uma aura de cidade que conserva o seu carácter ancestral.
As you stroll through the old town, the typical Galician taverns seem to invite visitors to come in and take shelter from the cold. We could smell the scent of Galician broth and traditional sweets in the air. The city, marked by the passage of time, maintains an intimate relationship with its traditions, and its inhabitants, with evident calm, continue to live the city with a rhythm that is typical of a place that does not allow itself to be rushed by the seasons or fashions.

Durante o percurso pela parte antiga, as típicas tabernas galegas parecem convidar os visitantes a entrar para se abrigar do frio. Conseguimos sentir o cheirinho a caldo galego e a doces tradicionais no ar. A cidade, marcada pela passagem dos tempos, mantém uma relação íntima com as suas tradições, e os seus habitantes, com uma calma evidente, continuam a viver a cidade com um ritmo que é próprio de um lugar que não se deixa apressar pelas estações ou pelas modas.
As the rain continued to fall, with the openings in the sky allowing us to peek at the rare rays of sunshine, we still went to explore a little more of this beautiful city that has so much to tell.

Surely with the rain the cold becomes more difficult to tolerate, but I did enjoy seeing the stone streets and buildings in the old town of Tui, it is a walk that conveys an incredible tranquility.
