Igreja Matriz & Núcleo Museológico - Mértola / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

igreja.jpg

Today I introduce you to the Main Church of Mértola, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation.
This building, which was initially built as a mosque during the Islamic period, is one of the few religious structures in Portugal that still preserves elements of its Muslim past despite having been adapted for Christian worship.
Visiting the Main Church is realizing the connection between cultures, which allows you to see how different influences coexist in the same space.

The church was built in the 12th century, during the Islamic era, when Mértola was an important Muslim city, known as I told you as "Martulah". The former mosque, built on a square structure, was converted into a church after the Christian reconquest in the 13th century. Many elements of the original architecture were maintained, making this space a testament to the cultural exchanges between Islam and Christianity. Among the Islamic elements that are still found is the mihrab (the niche that indicates the direction of Mecca), a rare detail in Portuguese churches and which continues to surprise those who visit this place.
I personally had never seen one!

Eu pessoalmente nunca tinha visto nenhum!

The church's external structure is relatively simple, but its interior offers a more detailed look at Islamic remains. The columns and arches that support the structure have characteristics of Islamic architecture. The main altar and the details introduced after adaptation to Christian worship were integrated in order to maintain harmony with the original structure, making the Main Church of Mértola a symbol between two religious traditions.

We exit through the side door of the church and go down towards the right side. There we discovered the Islamic Museum Center of Mértola.
This museum is part of the Mértola Museum and contains a valuable collection of Islamic artifacts, many discovered in archaeological excavations carried out in the town. Among the pieces on display are ceramics, jewelry and everyday objects.

Both places, the Main Church and the Museum Center, allow visitors to understand the time when Mértola was a meeting point of civilizations. The interaction between Islam and Christianity is visible and palpable, highlighting the tolerance and adaptation that allowed the original structures to be maintained until today.

The role of the Mértola Museum in preserving this heritage is fundamental, not only because it guarantees the conservation of artifacts and historical spaces, but also because it promotes the study and dissemination of the town's history. Thanks to research and conservation work, everyone can explore a cultural heritage that remains alive and accessible.
These two places are, therefore, must-visit places for anyone who wants to understand the history of the village.

I’ve always loved those tiles, the look of it is vibrant and the feel is softer to our hands. The church of our lady does have a nice charm and I bet it was very quiet too. The everyday objects have intrigued me and would love to know what those are! Especially the number 8. 😉

Hello @coffeenlove. The tiles are beautiful and in some houses they are used. To answer your question, number 8 is a bone stiletto fragment and a decorated plate as you may see below:-)

Hello! Thank you very much for posting in the Worldmappin Community 😃.

We noticed that you included more than one PIN code in the post. This is not necessary and can lead to double pinning. If you are writing about a trip with different points of interest, it is advisable to indicate only one PIN of the most important place or central location.

Double pinning can lead to problems for our curation, so if you keep doing it we can not guarantee you to be considered for our daily Travel Digest.

We recommend that you obtain the code either from https://worldmappin.com/, or by selecting the location directly on the small map at the bottom of the text editor in the PeakD interface.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team on our Discord channel.

Cheers!
