Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We arrived in Monsanto, the most Portuguese village in Portugal.
As we travel along the national road we see the little houses perched on a granite slope in the distance!
Simply breathtaking for all the reasons and then some. Full of history and culture. We came with expectations but they were all exceeded. Through Booking we managed to find a small house right in the center of the village, completely restored in granite and where each floor corresponded to a room.

On the last, a terrace with a wonderful view over the entire plain in front of us. I can't tell you if I liked this place more during the day or at night. I will present both aspects here so you can evaluate :-)
We found out the day we arrived that part of the series Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon was filmed here! Some of the inhabitants explained to us that they welcomed the actors and all the staff and that they walked these streets every day on their way to the castle. We settled in and immediately went on a reconnaissance tour.

There is evidence of human presence in Monsanto since Paleolithic times. Archaeological finds in the region show Roman occupation in the S. Lourenço field, at the foot of the mountain. There are also traces of Visigothic and Arab permanence. D. Afonso Henriques conquered Monsanto from the Moors and donated the town to the Templar Order in 1165, led by D. Gualdim Pais, who ordered the construction of the Castle.

D. Afonso Henriques (first king of Portugal) granted the first Charter to Monsanto in 1174, which was confirmed by D. Sancho I in 1190 and by D. Afonso II in 1217. Later, in 1510, D. Manuel I granted a New Charter for Monsanto and elevated it to the category of town.
We learned the popular village saying:
You never know at Monsanto
(which eagles brush with their wings)
if the house is born from the rock
if the rock rises from the house.
PT
In fact, it is often extremely difficult to understand where the house begins and the rock ends or vice versa. Practically all the houses have been restored and many of them have a story to tell. Some well-known names lived here, which I will tell you about later! Commerce is scarce, with only a small grocery store, two cafes and two restaurants! Around 9pm everything is closed and silence reigns here. We stopped at one of the cafes to buy water, drink a coffee and treat the little one to an ice cream! While my husband went to get things, we sat on a rock outside. Next to us was a man, who in his eighties or so, explained to us that this was the stone of patience.

This stone or bench was used for visitors to those who were imprisoned, witnesses waiting to be called in court proceedings, reflecting the popular opinion about the indifference and slowness of the authorities.
We went up a little further and found a cave (which houses bats at night), which used to be a furda (a place where pigs were kept) but which today is more of a tourist spot in the village.
I'll be back tomorrow with more details about this spectacular stay!

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
