The Pombeiro Monastery, located in Felgueiras, was one of those surprises. It was on a cold, rainy morning, when I found myself lost in the narrow streets of Felgueiras, looking for a client's company, that I ended up discovering this monument. As I always do, I left the company early for the meeting, anticipating that unforeseen events could arise, and what I didn't know is that this unforeseen event would bring me to this little corner of silence and history.

O Mosteiro de Pombeiro, localizado em Felgueiras, foi uma daquelas surpresas. Foi numa manhã de chuva e frio, quando me vi perdida nas ruas estreitas de Felgueiras, à procura da empresa de um cliente, que acabei por descobrir este monumento. Como sempre faço, saí mais cedo da empresa para a reunião, prevendo que imprevistos pudessem surgir, e o que não sabia é que esse imprevisto me traria até este recanto de silêncio e história.
The streets were closed due to bad weather, which made visibility difficult and driving even more complicated. The GPS, which normally guides me accurately, seemed to be equally disoriented, trying to find alternatives to take me to my destination, but between it and me I didn't know which was the most confused. It was then that, on one of these unexpected turns, I came across the Pombeiro Monastery, an imposing structure of great historical significance.

As ruas estavam cortadas por causa do mau tempo, o que dificultava a visibilidade e tornava a condução ainda mais complicada. O GPS, que normalmente me guia com precisão, parecia estar igualmente desorientado, tentando encontrar alternativas para me levar ao meu destino, mas entre ele e eu não sabia qual era o mais confuso. Foi então que, numa dessas voltas inesperadas, dei de caras com o Mosteiro de Pombeiro, uma estrutura imponente e de grande significado histórico.
The monastery does not go unnoticed by those who pass by. Its old, weathered stone façade makes you feel instantly transported to another era. I couldn't resist and parked the car to take some photos, capturing that scene that despite everything, seemed to be at peace with itself and the world around it.

O mosteiro não passa indiferente aos olhos de quem por ali passa. A sua fachada antiga, de pedra desgastada , faz com que nos sintamos imediatamente transportados para outra época. Não pude resistir e estacionei o carro para tirar algumas fotos, capturando aquele cenário que apesar de tudo, parecia estar em paz consigo mesmo e com o mundo à sua volta.
The Pombeiro Monastery has a rich history, which begins in the 7th century. Initially founded as a small hermitage, it was transformed and expanded over the centuries, reflecting the evolution of monastic art and architecture over time. Initially, it was linked to the Order of Saint Benedict, but over the centuries it underwent several modifications. During the Middle Ages, it was an important center of religious devotion, as well as a reception and support point for pilgrims who followed the path to Santiago de Compostela.

O Mosteiro de Pombeiro tem uma história rica, que se inicia no século VII. Fundado inicialmente como uma pequena ermida, foi ao longo dos séculos transformado e ampliado, refletindo a evolução da arte e arquitetura monástica ao longo do tempo. No início, esteve ligado à Ordem de São Bento, mas ao longo dos séculos sofreu diversas modificações. Durante a Idade Média, foi um importante centro de devoção religiosa, além de um ponto de acolhimento e apoio a peregrinos que seguiam pelo caminho até Santiago de Compostela.
The monastery gained importance not only for its religious function, but also for its connection with agriculture and the development of the region. The monks dedicated themselves to cultivating the land and producing wine, and the monastery was a point of convergence between agricultural and spiritual knowledge. However, over time, the monastery was progressively abandoned and its properties were scattered, leaving the monument isolated and almost forgotten. Today, the Pombeiro Monastery is a National Heritage Site and continues to be a symbol of the region's religious and cultural history.

O mosteiro ganhou importância não só pela sua função religiosa, mas também pela sua ligação à agricultura e ao desenvolvimento da região. Os monges dedicavam-se ao cultivo da terra e à produção de vinho, e o mosteiro era um ponto de convergência entre os saberes agrícolas e espirituais. Contudo, ao longo do tempo, o mosteiro foi sendo progressivamente abandonado e as suas propriedades foram sendo espalhadas, deixando o monumento isolado e quase esquecido. Hoje em dia, o Mosteiro de Pombeiro é um Património Nacional e continua a ser um símbolo da história religiosa e cultural da região.
What particularly touched me was the tranquility that this place conveyed, even on such a sad day. As I walked around, I was able to observe more closely the details of its architecture, such as the columns and arches that remain despite the centuries that have passed.

O que me tocou particularmente foi a tranquilidade que este local transmitia, mesmo num dia tão tristonho. Ao caminhar em volta do, pude observar com mais atenção os pormenores da sua arquitetura, como as colunas e arcos que se mantêm, apesar dos séculos que passaram.
After a few minutes, I continued on my way because I didn't know what was waiting for me yet. The Pombeiro Monastery became an unexpected stop, but it was worth it. Sometimes life has this ability to surprise us at the most unlikely times. What started as an attempt to find a company ended up being an opportunity to find a piece of history.
This is the record of a visit that, without being planned, turned out to be one of the most pleasant moments of my day, leaving me with the impression that, sometimes, losing our way takes us to the most enriching places.

Após alguns minutos, retomei o meu caminho pois não sabia o que me esperava ainda. O Mosteiro de Pombeiro tornou-se uma paragem inesperada, mas que valeu a pena. Às vezes, a vida tem esta capacidade de nos surpreender nos momentos mais improváveis. O que começou como uma tentativa de encontrar uma empresa, acabou por ser uma oportunidade de encontrar um pedaço de história.
Fica assim o registo de uma visita que, sem ser planeada, se revelou um dos momentos mais agradáveis do meu dia, deixando-me a impressão de que, por vezes, a perda de rumo leva-nos aos locais mais enriquecedores.

Incredible place. Personally, I love to visit such places when the weather is bad; I guess this kind of fog fits perfectly with the gothic aesthetic. Damn, you always manage to find amazing spots 😊
