The central part of the Iberian Peninsula to the west of the autonomous community of Castile and Leon and bordering the Galician community to the province of Zamora. I traveled by train from the center of the country being able to observe a very changing landscape until reaching the city of Zamora, the capital of the province. A great surprise awaited me at the station of the town, I found myself in one of the most impressive buildings for this purpose of the many that I had seen. It was a mixture between the renovated old architecture and the modern railway technology very well fused. A large old steam engine well preserved awaited me as a way of decorating with history and giving that railway touch to the roundabout on the road of the station where it was located, above a section of track. I had informed myself well about this destination and I suggest that if you come to visit Zamora you take at least two days to see the city calmly. I was quite lucky as the weather was very changeable and turned into a storm between large sunbursts, which I think is fantastic weather for taking photos. During these two days I was able to enjoy different situations in terms of the weather, which helped me capture the kind of images I am showing you today.
La parte central de la península Ibérica hacia el oeste de la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León y limitando con la comunidad gallega a la provincia de Zamora. He viajado en tren desde el centro del país pudiendo observar un paisaje muy cambiante hasta llegar a la ciudad de Zamora, la capital de la provincia. Una gran sorpresa me espera en la estación de la villa, me encontré en uno de los edificios para este fin más impresionantes de los muchos que había visto. Era una mezcla entre la arquitectura antigua reformada y la tecnología ferroviaria moderna muy bien fusionada. Una gran máquina antigua de vapor bien conservada me esperaba como forma de adornar de historia y dar ese toque ferroviario a la rotonda en la carretera de la estación donde estaba situada, encima de un tramo de vía. Me había informado bien sobre este destino y os sugiero que si venís a visitar Zamora os toméis al menos dos días para ver con calma la ciudad. Tuve bastante suerte ya que el tiempo fue muy cambiante y se tornaba tormenta entre grandes claros de sol lo que para tomar fotografías me parece un clima fantástico. Durante estos dos días pude disfrutar de situaciones distintas en cuanto al el ambiente climático que me ayudo a captar este tipo de imágenes que os muestro hoy.
I stayed in a fairly high place near the faculty of the Zamora campus that belongs to the University of Salamanca in a new part of this city. From there I began my tour that would start in the river area. This city is divided by one of the most important rivers in the country, the Duero. On both sides of the river, between bridges, the river walks run for several kilometers and let me see some of the most beautiful places in the town. Significant are its mills, called aceñas, which since ancient times use the force of water to move those large wooden blades and produce friction between the granite millstones to grind the seeds. There are areas where the river landscape becomes wilder and more natural, which I love. Between the branches I was able to see several typical boats used for river navigation in this area, their shapes and colors deserve a place on this trip.
Me aloje en un sitio bastante elevado cercano a la facultad del campus de Zamora que pertenece a de la Universidad de Salamanca en una parte nueva de esta ciudad. Dese allí empecé mi recorrido que empezaría por la zona del río. Esta ciudad está dividida por uno de los ríos más importantes del país, El Duero. A ambos márgenes del río, entre puentes, los paseos fluviales recorren varios kilómetros y me dejaba ver algunos de los lugares más bonitos de la villa. Significativo son sus molinos, llamados aceñas, que desde tiempo remoto usan la fuerza del agua para mover esas grandes aspas de madera y producir fricción entre las muelas de granito para moler las semillas. Hay zonas donde el paisaje del río se vuelve más salvaje y natural, cosa que me encanta. Entre las ramas he podido ver varias embarcaciones típicas de la navegación por el rio de esta zona, sus formas y colorido merecen un puesto en este viaje.
Going up from the river along a street with an impressive ramp, I headed towards the historic center, the old town of Zamora. I had been informed of the location of two of the main objectives in the city, the castle of Zamora and its Cathedral, a jewel of the Romanesque style in Europe. Regarding the history of the castle and this entire elevated area on the banks of the Duero River, there is a popular saying, “Zamora was not taken in an hour” and that came from the siege of the city between two brothers, between Sancho II of Castile and his sister Urraca. This saying refers to the fact that things are achieved with a lot of effort and time. When I was going to tour the Castle, an intense storm was threatening and I saw the opportunity to capture these beautiful images of that moment. The restoration of this ancient architecture is one of the richest in architectural pieces of the castles I have visited, this is one of the best in that aspect.
Subiendo desde el río por una calle con una rampa impresionante me dirigí hacia el centro histórico, al casco antiguo de la ciudad de Zamora. Me había informado de la ubicación de dos de principales objetivos en la ciudad, el castillo de Zamora y su Catedral joya del estilo románico en Europa. Sobre la historia del castillo y toda esta zona elevada en el margen del río Duero aparece un dicho popular, “Zamora no se tomo en una hora” y que procedía del asedio de la ciudad entre dos hermanos, entre Sancho II de castilla y su hermana Urraca. Este dicho hace alusión a que las cosas se consiguen con mucho esfuerzo y con tiempo. Cuando iba a recorrer el Castillo una intensa tormenta estaba amenazando y vi la oportunidad de captar estas bonitas imágenes de ese momento. La restauración de esta antigua arquitectura es de las más ricas en piezas arquitectónicas de los castillos que llevo visitado, este es de los mejores en ese aspecto.
The cathedral is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe, being a national monument with its cross shape, tower and dome. The peculiar shape and the name “escamosa” (scaly), or full of scales, are due to the architectural motif that covers this dome. In a time of architectural austerity, it is one of the strongest and most compact in this area and its completion reveals the beginning of another later architectural style, Gothic. Walking around its surroundings and visiting it inside is another reason why I suggest at least two days to visit this beautiful city on the banks of the Duero River.
La catedral es uno de los mejores ejemplo en Europa del románico siendo monumento nacional con su forma de cruz, su torre y su cúpula. La forma tan peculiar y el nombre de “escamosa”, o llena de escamas por el motivo arquitectónico que cubre esta cúpula. En una época de austeridad arquitectónica es de las mas recias y compactas de todo este entorno y dejan entrever en su finalización el inicio de otro estilo arquitectónico posterior, el gótico. Pasear por sus alrededores y visitarla por dentro es otro de los motivos por los cuales sugería al menos dos días para visitar esta preciosa ciudad a orillas del río Duero.
The charm of the old city of Zamora is evident when walking through its streets and squares that turn every corner into a surprise.
