Good day community

At this very special time of year, the streets of towns and cities are filled with decorations, nativity scenes, gifts and a very special festive atmosphere. On this occasion, I went to the Extremadura, town of Don Benito, located in the centre of the province of Badajoz, in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. I left the city of Cáceres to take the “Ruta de la Plata” motorway that would take me to the capital of Extremadura, Mérida, and then head towards the town that I am bringing you today, Don Benito. I had been told about a beautiful nativity scene on the main street made of wood and with a great tradition in this city. First, when I arrived, I settled in and then walked through the streets and the centre of the town to get to know this beautiful town.

When I arrived at the centre of the town on the street that leads to the main square and town hall, the life-size wooden nativity scene made by local craftsmen caught my attention. I spent a long time looking at the realism and the multitude of details and one of the things that caught my attention the most was its simplicity but also the realism that the faces of the characters showed. The Virgin, Saint Joseph, the child, the shepherds and the kings were the protagonists and the decoration of the nativity scene was, without a doubt, the centre of attention of Christmas in Don Benito. The life-size wooden carvings showed a singular realism in their placement on the scene and occupied the attention of all those people who walked through this area of the city.

I continued my tour of the town and headed towards its main square. There were several buildings that caught my attention, the market, the church and the town hall building. Don Benito is a recent town located in an area with very special characteristics. The so-called “Vegas del Guadiana” are an orchard of crops and vegetation due to the fact that the Guadiana River runs through this area, making these lands very productive. Fields of fruit trees, vegetables, tomatoes, olive trees, corn and other crops are the kings of the place in this region of Extremadura. The trade and growth of this young city is largely due to this situation and has led to this region becoming an important commercial city of which it is proud.

I was surprised by the large number of shops I found on the main street as I walked along. A central, pedestrian street where you could buy almost everything and which gave life to this town. A significant number of local people come to shop in this area as it is home to the best shops in the area. I didn't want to stay only with this commercial part on this trip so I started to wander around the city and try to get lost in it to find nice corners to remember.

I always wondered what it looks like in Badajoz since very good friends of mine live there. Always amazing to see how catholic the Spanish are... I´ve never seen such big statues.

Spain, as you know, is very mystical. I call it the deep Spain. Badajoz is the largest province in the country and I must tell you that there are many different landscapes from north to south. The capital, Mérida, is a jewel and, as the capital of the Roman Empire of Lusitania, it preserves many remains, a beauty. @lizanomadsoul

It sounds super promising to visit! I didn´t know Badajoz is the biggest province.. something new learned - thanks to you @oscarps🐝😘 - I love in Spain that so many cultures met over time, that you can see the mix in architecture, culture and even language. It is a mix but at the same time very beautiful and unique. ❤️
