The mountain range that forms the north of the province of Cáceres also leaves some valleys and plains that have been filled by water forming large lakes and swamps. In this case, the town of Granadilla has been a story of abandonment due to the flooding of an area for the creation of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, which by an agreement of the central government of the Franco dictatorship, in 1955, was expropriated along with all the farmland that belonged to this area. At that time, the policies of creating reservoirs and dams were in full swing since the government of General Franco wanted to build large hydraulic engineering works that provide energy to rebuild a country that had emerged from the civil war that ended the republic. An eviction that caused many people to have to leave their homes, their farmland and their way of life. La Granadilla was located in the highest part of the area and this was taken advantage of by the founders of this town, the Muslims, who together with other towns in this northern area such as Plasencia or Al-Balat were for many years the doors and the limits of the two kingdoms, the Muslim and the Christian. The first was the walled enclosure of the town next to the defensive tower that guarded it. By the E-803 road that goes from Cáceres to the detour of the EX-205 that passes through the towns of La Granja and La Zarza de la Granadilla, you reach the reservoir where the abandoned town is located.
El conjunto de montañas que forman el norte de la provincia de Cáceres deja también algunos valles y llanuras que han sido rellenadas por el agua formando grandes lagos y pantanos. En este caso del pueblo de la Granadilla ha sido una historia de abandono debido a la inundación de una zona para la creación del embalsa de Gabriel y Galán que por un acuerdo del gobierno central de la dictadura franquista, año 1955, fue expropiado junto a todas las tierras de cultivo que pertenecían a esta área. Entonces las políticas de creación de embalses y represas estaban en pleno auge ya que el gobierno del general Franco quería construir grandes obras de ingeniería hidráulica que proporciona energía para reconstruir a un país salido de la guerra civil que acabo con la república. Un desalojo que provoco que muchas personas tuvieran que dejar sus casas, su tierras de cultivo y su forma de vida. La Granadilla se encontraba situada en la parte más elevada de la zona y esto fue aprovechado por los fundadores de esta población, los musulmanes, que junto con otras poblaciones de esta zona norte como Plasencia o Al-Balat fueron durante muchos años las puertas y los limites de los dos reinos, el musulmán y el cristiano. La primera fue el recinto amurallado de la villa junto a la torre defensiva que la custodiaba. Por la carretera E-803 que va desde Cáceres hasta el desvío de la EX-205 que pasa por las poblaciones de la Granja y de la Zarza de la Granadilla se llega al embalse donde se encuentra el pueblo abandonado.

When entering an abandoned place, time stops in the period in which this happened and I can begin to imagine what life might have been like in this quiet and picturesque town. Recently, restoration work has helped to see it in a more complete way and how it might have been in its time, but you could still see much of the deterioration due to abandonment over the years. Granadilla is located at the foot of the reservoir and its evacuation was due to fear that the flood would also destroy these lands. I found myself inside the walled enclosure that had kept the town safe and I noticed the structure like many other towns, its main square, its church, its town hall but in a ghostly state that made me sad and at the same time a special charm for these places. I like to investigate buildings, whether industrial or as in this case an entire town, in a state of abandonment for years, since it always tells a story, sometimes very complex and that links with events that occur in its full activity until its deterioration.
Al entrar en un lugar abandonado el tiempo se detiene en el período en el que esto ocurre y puedo empezar a imaginarme como podía haber sido la vida en este tranquilo y pintoresco pueblo. Recientemente trabajos de restauración ha ayudado a verlo de una manera más completa y de cómo podía haber sido en su época pero aun se podía ver gran parte del deterioro por el abandono a lo largo de los años. Granadilla se encuentra a los pies del pantano y su desalojo fue por el temor a que la inundación también arrasase estos terrenos. Me encontré dentro del recinto amurallado que había mantenido segura la villa y me fije en la estructura como otros muchos pueblos, su plaza mayor, su iglesia, su ayuntamiento pero en un estado fantasmagórico que me producía pena y a la vez un encanto especial por estos lugares. Me gusta indagar en construcciones, ya sean industriales o como este caso todo un poblado, en estado de abandono en años ya que siempre cuenta una historia a veces muy compleja y que liga con acontecimientos que se producen en su plena actividad hasta su deterioro.

I was approaching the center of Granadilla where I could see a large central square with the most notable buildings of the town, the town hall and the houses of the wealthiest people due to the style of construction I observed. The reconstruction of this area has carefully respected the essence and how it was when it was inhabited. In one of its side streets I could see the church tower that stood out from the ruins and was preserved practically intact. The charm of many of the places I visit is found in how attractive they seem to me because they are great unknowns and part of our history made up of many chapters of it. I also observe the type of materials they used, in this case the stone and wood native to the area and which they took advantage of to build blending in with their surroundings. I visited one of these houses in the center inside and time stopped when I entered it, a unique sensation. Visiting these types of ghost towns without the tourist crowds is another thing that I like when traveling through these places, since they transmit their essence to me in a much more realistic and profound way in these experiences of getting to know the place.
Me fui acercando al centro de Granadilla donde pude observar una gran plaza central con los edificios más notables del poblado, ayuntamiento y las casas de las gentes más pudientes por el estilo de construcción que observe. La reconstrucción de esta zona ha respetado cuidadosamente la esencia y el cómo se encontraba cuando estaba habitado. En una de sus calles laterales pude ver la torre de la iglesia que destacaba de entre las ruinas y que se conservaba prácticamente intacta. El encanto de muchos de los sitios que visito lo encuentro en lo atractivos que se me hacen por ser grandes desconocidos y parte de nuestra historia formada por muchos capítulos de la misma. Observo también el tipo de materiales que usaban, en este caso la piedra y madera autóctonos de la zona y que aprovechaban para construir mimetizando con su entorno. Visite una de estas casas del centro en su interior y el tiempo se detuvo al entrar en ella, una sensación única. Recorrer este tipo de pueblos fantasmas sin masificaciones turísticas es otra de las cuestiones que me gusta a la hora de viajar por estos lugares ya que me trasmiten su esencia de una manera mucho más realista y profunda en estas experiencias de conocimiento del lugar.

I climbed to the top of the tower where the views were fantastic and I understood why this strong construction was in that precise spot. The interior stairs were very winding and left some windows for the entry of natural light, giving it a certain ghostly appearance. I imagined those Muslim soldiers going up to carry out their surveillance and what it must have been like to live in that era. When I got to the top, the views around the entire perimeter of the tower left me speechless; you could see the entire population and miles of landscape surrounding the entire area. I found the construction in a unique state of maintenance and it seemed that it was currently in use, leading me to imagine the situations that could occur there.
Me subí a lo alto de la torre donde las vistas eran fantásticas y entendí el porqué estaba en ese punto preciso esta recia construcción. Las escaleras interiores eran muy sinuosas y dejaban algunas ventanas para la entrada de la luz natural, le daban cierto aspecto fantasmagórico. Me imaginaba aquellos soldados musulmanes subiéndose a realizar sus guardias de vigilancia y el cómo tuvo que ser vivir en aquella época. Al llegar arriba las vistas por todo el perímetro de la torre me dejaron boquiabierto, se podía ver toda la población y kilómetros de paisaje que rodeaba toda la zona. Encontré la construcción en un estado único en cuanto a su mantenimiento y parecía que estaba actualmente en uso llevándome a imaginar las situaciones que se podrían producir allí.

I walked out of the enclosure and approached the reservoir. A well-prepared hiking route covered a long stretch and I headed towards the shore. My thoughts were mixed, as on the one hand I felt sorry for all those people whose lives had been changed by losing their houses and lands due to all those hectares of flooded land, and on the other hand the beauty of the landscape of this Gabriel y Galán reservoir in the province of Cáceres, autonomous community of Extremadura in Spain. From the colour of the waters, the toponymy of the region and the amount of space covered by the reservoir I could get an exact idea of the magnitude that this operation entailed.
Camine hasta salirme del recinto y acercarme al pantano. Una ruta de senderismo muy bien preparada recorría un gran tramo y me dirigí hacia la orilla. Mis pensamientos eran encontrados ya que me daba pena por un lado todas aquellas personas que sus vidas habían sido modificadas perdiendo, por todas aquellas hectáreas de terreno inundado, sus casas y tierras y por otro la belleza del paisaje de este embalse de Gabriel y Galán en la provincia de Cáceres, comunidad autónoma de Extremadura en España. Por el color de las aguas, la toponimia de la región y por lo que cubría en espacio el pantano podría tener una idea exacta de la magnitud que supuso aquella operación.
